“Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,

as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area,

with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said,

‘Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace.’ His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me.

At this the Jews answered and said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.’

The Jews said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said

this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name

when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all,

and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.”

Support Group for Families of Incarcerated Persons The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Re-storative Justice, has formed a support group for family members of incarcerated persons. This group meets at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of each month at the Women’s Gathering Place (First Presbyterian Church) 49 North 4th Street, San Jose 95112. The purpose of this group is to provide support, encouragement, and prayer during this difficult time. Today we read how Jesus overturned the tables of the merchants and mon-eychangers in the Temple at Jerusa-lem. In order to understand Jesus’ action, we must learn more about the temple activities. Worship included animal sacrifice and merchants sold

animals to worshipers. Moneychangers exchanged Roman coins, which bore the image of the Roman em-peror, for the temple coins needed to pay the temple tax. Jesus’ action at the Temple in Jerusalem is record-ed in all four Gospels and is often understood to be among the events that led to Jesus’ arrest and Crucifix-ion. The Gospel of John, however, places this event early in Jesus’ public ministry, occurring after Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. We must read it carefully for its presentation of Jesus’ relation-ship to Judaism. The Gospel of John, the last one to be written, tends to reflect greater tension and animosity between Jesus and the Jewish authorities than the oth-er Gospels, signaling the growing divide between the Jewish community and the early Christian community. Reflecting upon the destruction of the Temple of Jeru-salem (A.D. 70), John recalls Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple and uses that story to interpret this later event. John explains to his audience, an early Christian com-munity, that temple worship would no longer be nec-essary because it was surpassed in the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus. John’s Gospel tells us that after the clearing of the Temple, the people asked for a sign of Jesus’ authority to do such an audacious act. In response, Jesus predicted his death and Resurrection. Throughout John’s Gospel, the language of signs is distinctive. Jesus’ miracles are called signs, and the people look to these signs for proof of his authority. Here we learn that the sign par excellence will be Je-sus’ passion, death, and Resurrection. During Lent we reflect upon its meaning for us and for our world. We might consider the quality of our prayer and worship. In our prayers we seek to deepen our relationship with the person of Christ. In our worship with the commu-nity, we gather to experience anew the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus and its significance in our lives. Christ promises to be present with us when we gather for prayer.

S aint of the Week Saint Katherine Drexel November 26, 1858 -March 3, 1955

Born in Philadelphia in 1858, Katharine Drexel had an excel-lent education and traveled widely. As a rich girl, the daughter of an international banker, Katharine also had a grand debut into society. But when she nursed her stepmother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw that all the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death, and her life took a profound turn. Katharine had always been interested in the plight of the Native Americans, having been appalled by what she read in Helen Hunt Jackson’s A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O’Connor. The pope replied, “Why don’t you become a missionary?” His answer shocked her into considering new possibilities. Back home, Katharine visited the Da-kotas, met the Sioux leader Red Cloud and began her systematic aid to the missions. Katharine Drexel could easi-ly have married. Newspaper headlines screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!” After three and a half years of training, Mother Drexel and her first band of nuns opened a boarding school in San-ta Fe. A string of foundations followed. By 1942, she had a system of black Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centers and 23 rural schools. Segregationists harassed her work, even burning a school in Pennsylvania. In all, she es-tablished 50 missions for Native Americans in 16 states. Two saints met when Mother Drexel was advised by Mother Cabrini about the “politics” of getting her order’s Rule ap-proved in Rome. Her crowning achievement was the founding of Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic uni-versity in the United States for African Americans. At 77, Mother Drexel suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. Apparently her life was over. But now came almost 20 years of quiet, intense prayer from a small room overlooking the sanctuary. Small notebooks and slips of paper record her vari-ous prayers, ceaseless aspirations, and meditations. She died at 96 and was canonized in 2000 by John Paul II.
