The Christmas Mystery: ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.’ (John 1 :14)
I once heard a priest whom I deeply respected say some-thing about Christmas that troubled me. He said that Christmas was really more for children, while Easter was truly for adults. This statement troubled me because while the Christmas mystery is more easily accessible to children than might be the Easter mystery, Christmas is neither superficial nor superfluous. On the contrary, the Christmas mystery is profoundly penetrating as it pro-vides the foundation for understanding the key signifi-cance of the Easter mystery.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes St. Atha-nasius’ poignant expression: ‘the Son of God became man so that we might become God’ (CCC 460). This is sometimes referred to as the ‘great exchange:’ God en-ters the human condition to transform it, heal it, and ele-vate it, so that humanity might enjoy communion with God. Indeed, there is nothing superficial or superfluous about that aspect of the Christian mystery. This is the deep significance of the Christmas celebration: God en-ters our world, our humanity, so that we might enter his world, his divinity.
We might ask one more question in all this: why does God do this? He doesn’t have to. He humbles himself to enter our humanity freely, out of love – love for you and me. I invite us all to ponder that mystery of God’s boundless love during this Christmas Season. Let us take time to ponder the quiet serenity of Manger scene – Joseph and Mary in adoration of the new born Jesus. This scene speaks to us deeply of God’s quiet, but pro-found presence in the world, and if we allow him to en-ter, in our lives.
In this Christmas Season, I pray that the sacred mystery of Jesus’ birth penetrate our lives, our families, our rela-tionships, our work and activity, that we might acknowledge the power of the Incarnation ever at work within us – transforming us, healing us, elevating us to communion with a God who loves us beyond our imagi-nation.

El Misterio Navideño: ‘La Palabra se hizo Carne y puso su Morada entre nosotros.’ (Juan 1:14)
Una vez escuché a un sacerdote a quien respetaba pro-fundamente decir algo sobre la Navidad que me preocu-pó. Él dijo que la Navidad era más para niños, mientras que la Pascua era realmente para los adultos. Esta decla-ración me incomodó, por que a pesar de que el misterio navideño es más fácilmente accesible a los niños de lo que podría ser el misterio de la Pascua, la Navidad no es superficial ni superflua. Esta escena nos habla profundamente de la pre-sencia silenciosa de Dios, pero profunda presencia en el mundo, y si le permitimos entrar en nuestras vidas.
En esta temporada de Navidad, oro para que el misterio sagrado del nacimiento de Jesús penetre en nuestras vi-das, nuestras familias, nuestras relaciones, nuestro traba-jo y actividad, para que podamos conocer el poder de la Encarnación que siempre funciona dentro de nosotros—transformándonos, sanándonos, elevándonos a la comu-nión con un Dios que nos ama más allá de nuestra imagi-nación.

LITURGICAL ADAPTATIONS DURING THE COLD/FLU SEASON
Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants and not on the tongue. The faithful should refrain from holding hands dur-ing the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer. Sign of Peace should be a greeting that does not re-quire shaking hands or touching These adaptations are to remain in effect through-out the Diocese until conditions allow for them to be re-scinded at which time our parish will be notified. Please know that the obligation to participate in Sun-day Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symp-toms to remain at home. FEAST OF SANTO NINO The annual Diocesan Fiesta of the Santo Nino will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph with Most Reverend Carlos Sevilla presiding. A nine-days novena at various churches in the Diocese will precede the fiesta (See schedule below). The celebration of the Santo Nino Fiesta is on January 18, 2020 at the Saint Joseph Cathe-dral Basilica at 12:00 noon. Festivities will start at 11:45 A.M. with the traditional procession of the Sinulog and Karakol. At 6:30 P.M., a Dinner- Dance will be held at the Pavalkis Hall of St. John the Baptist. Tickets are $40.00 prepaid and $50.00 at the door. Today we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. As we do so, our Gospel invites us to consider Joseph's protection of Jesus in the face of danger. Just as in the announcement of Jesus' birth, an angel appears to Joseph in a
dream. The angel warns him of Herod's plans to harm Jesus. Joseph follows the command of the angel and takes Jesus and Mary to Egypt, returning only after re-ceiving word in another dream that it was safe to do so. This feast is part of the Christmas season, so we should look at today's Gospel in the context of what Scripture tells us about Jesus' birth. Today's reading is found in the Gospel of Matthew, following the story of the visit of the Magi. Recall that Matthew's story about the birth of Jesus makes Joseph the primary character. Among Matthew's themes in this infancy narrative is Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies about the messiah. Indeed, the story of the Holy Family's flight to Egypt recalls the story of Moses in the Book of Exodus. It should also be noted that today's reading omits the verses that recount Herod's order of the massa-cre of the infant boys in and around Bethlehem. We mark this event on the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28. These events remind us of the difficult reality of Jesus' birth. While the story of the Magi's visit will be recalled in our liturgy on the Feast of the Epiph-any, our Christmas celebration is made more sober by the recollection that not everyone received Christ's birth with joy or obedience. Herod's jealousy and malice con-trast with Joseph's obedience to the words of the angel. The Holy Family's escape to Egypt and the massacre that Jesus is saved from remind us of the struggles and sacrifices that are required as preparation for God's sal-vation.

S aint of the Week Thomas Beckett December 21, 1118 – December 29, 1170
Thomas was born in 1118 in London. He studied law and became an assistant to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas met influential people in the Church and the gov-ernment. The archbishop trusted him and sent him to Rome several times on Church matters. Thomas was also or-dained as a deacon. That same year, a new king was crowned in England, Henry II. Thomas and Henry became good friends. Henry appointed Thomas the chancellor of England, an important position in the government. A large salary came with the job, and Thomas began to live like a wealthy man. After the archbishop died, King Henry decid-ed to have Thomas take his place. Thomas was ordained a priest, then a bishop. Thomas took his vocation and his new responsibilities seriously. He changed the way he was living. He welcomed the poor into his house and served them meals himself. Thomas and King Henry began to dis-agree about the power the king had over the Church. They argued over unfair taxes on Church lands. They argued about whether priests accused of crimes should be tried by the Church or government court. Thomas was forced to go
into hiding out of the country for over six years. When he returned to England in 1170, the situation had not im-proved. Four knights overheard King Henry say, “Will I never be rid of this priest?” So the knights decided to kill Thomas. They drew their swords and attacked him in the cathedral at Canterbury on December 29, asking “Where is the traitor?” Thomas replied, “Here I am, no traitor, but archbishop and priest of God.” As word of his murder spread through the land, the ca-thedral filled with people mourn-ing their archbishop. Within two years, Pope Alexander III de-clared him a saint. St. Thomas Beckett is buried at Canterbury, and many people visit his grave each year to pray to the man of God who stood up for the fair treatment of the Church and its people. We can honor St. Thomas by praying for all Catholics who are not free to live their faith.
