Persons with Disabilities: “Agents of the New Evangelization”!

As a Church, we are called to promote a culture of life that continually affirms the dignity of

every person, with a special defense of those with disabilities whose very existence is being threatened by societal actions and attitudes which disregard their worth. Thus, it is essential that parish communities work to raise awareness in the minds and hearts of all parishioners as to the importance of welcoming those with disabilities. In order to create a fully accessible parish requires more than mere physical accommodations but encompasses the attitudes and the actions of all of us towards those with disabilities.

It is a priority for us here at St. John’s to involve persons with disabilities and their families

in the life of our parish. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to realize the presence of all those with disabilities who live within the parish boundary. All too often, those with disabilities are unknown to pastoral staffs and communities. Those with disabilities can often face loneliness and, thus, the first step in catechesis is to go out and meet those with disabilities and their families and to welcome them to the parish. To accomplish this, parish visitation to homes is essential. Thus, please invite us to meet with anyone you may know who is disabled so that we can visit with him or her in order to invite them to be active members of our community.

In addition, we are working to tailor and adapt our catechetical program to meet the needs

of parishioners with disabilities. When there is a need for specialized catechesis, making it impossible for those with disabilities to participate in the basic parish catechetical program, we will do all that we can to adapt a program that works for that child or teen. Also, participation in parish life is encouraged in every way possible. As fully as all other members of the Church, persons with disabilities have a right to participate in the sacraments. All parish sacramental celebrations should be accessible to persons with disabilities and, according to their capacity, be open to their full and active participation. Special attention is to be paid to those with disabilities who have not yet received the sacraments of initiation. Children and adults with disabilities are to be welcomed into all of the stages and rites of the initiation process. However, these rites are to be adapted according to the need.

It is important to remember that those with disabilities are not only objects of the Church’s

catechesis but, like all those baptized, they are also subjects/agents of catechesis. Those with disabilities, by virtue of their being grafted onto Christ in Baptism, are made sharers in their own particular way in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly offices of Christ and, thus, evangelize through, with, and in the Church. The participation of catechists with disabilities would be a source of great richness for our parish. For as Pope Francis reminds us in Evangelii gaudium: “All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in faith, are agents of evangelization.”
