Step Out Stronger | Leave Quarantine Closer to Christ Our days in isolation will come to an end. When they do, will you emerge weaker

or stronger? Choose to use May in order to come out stronger. In these 30 days,

rather than dwelling on what we might be missing, we’re focusing on Jesus, giving

one percent of each day in prayer and completing a simple daily action to grow in

love for God and neighbor. Find out more information and register at:

www.archmil.org/Courageous-Communion/StepOutStronger.htm

Pause & Pray | Virtual Daily Prayer for Women This is a time of busy-ness and boredom, loneliness and laziness. Our routines are

disrupted. We experience uncertainty. We see the blessings of this extended time of

staying at home and we meet new challenges. But we know that now, more than

ever, we need Jesus.

If amid all the change you are struggling in your prayer life, you are not alone.

Join us each weekday at 2:00 pm via Zoom for 15 minutes of prayer. Slip away by

yourself if you can. If you can’t, put it on in the background or watch the recording.

We want to pray for you and with you. Please come along on this journey with us.

Please register at: https://archmil.regfox.com/pause-pray to receive the information.

Virtue Small Group Resource for Catholic Mothers If you’re looking to connect with other moms, we’ve got you covered. Even if

you’ve never led a small group before, we made it easy. The Virtue small group at:

www.archmil.org/evangelization/Courageous-Communion/Daily-Plan.htm for

moms is six sessions about the virtues and how you can incorporate them into your

own life as a quarantined mom.

The leader guide has everything you need to get started. There is even guidance

on what to look for in discussion question responses. The participant guide has all

the readings and space to journal. Both are downloadable pdfs. Reach out to a few

friends and start connecting. ●

Sister Parish Update

Just as we here in Milwaukee are

walking through these unprecedented

times, so too are our brothers and sisters

in the Dominican Republic. We received

an update that they are working hard to

combat illness with prevention measures

including public education about

handwashing and staying home. They

have also increased distribution of food to

the elderly and families, especially those

with young children who typically attend

the children's centers.

As the world comes together in these

trying times, we ask that you continue to

keep the families and staff of La Sagrada

Familia included in your prayers.

If you wish to contribute to emergency

funding for our sister parish you can

contribute by visiting stjohncathedral.org

and clicking on “Give Online” at the top

of the page and then scrolling down and

selecting “La Sagrada Familia”. Funds

will be used to assist in emergency relief

such as food, medicines and medical aid

as well as anticipated needs as they work

to recover economically over time such as

school supplies for the upcoming school

year.

Thanks and Blessings

Cathedral News & Notes ...

Please read the letter from Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki about the planned return to the public celebration of Masses on Pentecost

Sunday, May 31st. Please note, the Archbishop will continue the dispensation for those who are vulnerable or not comfortable

returning so soon. Live-stream and radio broadcast of the Mass will continue for those who stay home. Also, a 5:15 pm Mass on a

Saturday would be considered an anticipation Mass for Sunday - thus the 5:15 pm Mass on May 30 would be included in the opening

of the Churches on May 31. Please stay tuned for information regarding what safety measures will be put in place at the Cathedral

prior to opening – it is a very extensive list and we’re still working out all of the details. Thank you!

April 30, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As Catholics, the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our spiritual lives. Being deprived of the public celebration of the Mass

has been a tremendous hardship for both our people and our priests, who long to serve their people. As a Sacramental Church, the

reception of Communion is an integral part of our faith and worship. We recognize how truly lost and empty we are without the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass and without the reception of Jesus Christ, truly present in the Eucharist.

Now we look ahead to the time we return to celebrating Mass with our parish communities. We want to do this in a reasonable and

responsible way, with the safety of our people and respect for our sacramental life our top priorities. To that end, we are issuing

directives, guidelines and considerations, to aid our parishes in the resumption of public Mass and demonstrate our commitment to

protecting communities.

We understand the seriousness of this pandemic. We also understand the strong desire of our people to come together to worship

God and these directives provide both a reasonable and responsible way to make that happen in the coming weeks.

Pandemic-induced anxieties, confinement to homes, fear of catching the virus, unemployment, and financial uncertainty have left

people fearful and distressed. It is at times like these when the Church is most needed, bringing her message of faith, hope, and

charity.

The Church, at its best, addresses and assists people through difficult times. Just because public Masses were suspended, doesn’t

mean the Church became inactive; far from it. The Church continues to serve its people and its community. As part of the State’s

Badger Bounce Back, now is the time for the Catholic Comeback. Come Back to Sunday Mass; Come Back to Community; Come Back

to our roots as a Eucharistic People; Come Back to Service; Come Back Home.

Just as we did at the Archdiocesan Synod in 2014, “this can be for us a new Pentecost.” So we will begin again, anew, on Pentecost

Sunday, returning to the celebration of Sunday Mass beginning with Masses for Sunday, May 31. If circumstances warrant

consideration of an earlier date, I will communicate that change directly with you. Let us focus our energy now on preparing for a

safe return and let us proceed filled with faith and hope.

As we return, we must remember that some of our people will be anxious. It is important that we follow these directives for the

good of all. The last thing we would want is to contribute to a rebound of the virus that would again force a suspension of Masses

down the road.

This is a moment for Evangelization. It is a moment for Formation in the Sacraments. It is a moment of Invitation. It is a moment for

Christ, truly present in the Eucharist, to be truly present to His people through the ministry of the Church.

Please be assured of my prayers for you. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Jerome E. Listecki

The Cathedral Needs Your Help

Despite the high rate of participation in the radio, television

and YouTube Masses from the Cathedral, donations are down

considerably and our weekly cash flow is currently well below

our planned budget. We need your continued support in these

challenging times in order to continue our mission as Mother

Church of the Archdiocese: a beacon of faith, patron of the arts

and haven and advocate for the poor and marginalized.

Please consider sending your weekly envelope contributions

via mail to:

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

831 N. Van Buren Street

Milwaukee, WI 53202

or visit stjohncathedral.org and click on the “Give Online” button

at the top of the page. If you have any questions, please contact

Amy or Cathy at 414/276-9814.

New Tax Opportunities for Your Giving The CARES act, recently enacted to help post-Covid 19 economic recovery, creates a new opportunity to support the parish and get

a tax break. In 2020, up to $300 may be donated to the Cathedral and deducted from your Federal taxable income, even if you take the

standard deduction.

At the same time, for 2020 only, required minimum distributions have been suspended. However, if you are over 70-1/2 and have

an IRA, you are able to make a charitable contribution to the Cathedral.

During these challenging times, we recognize that many people are suffering economic hardships. However, if you are able, we

prayerfully ask you to consider taking advantage of this 2020 tax opportunity in order to continue to support the Cathedral’s

missions. So many people are in need of our spiritual and economic support!

Thank you for your consideration. ●

Pastoral Care

Are any among you sick? - James 5:14

The Pastoral Care Phone Extension (414/276-9814, ext. 603) is a special line dedicated exclusively to receiving requests for ministry and service to those who are sick, hospitalized, home-bound, residents of nursing homes or health care facilities or in need of the Sacraments and prayer. The Prayer Link (ext. 604 or [email protected]) is a line/email address dedicated to receiving requests for prayer by other parishioners and friends of the Cathedral. If you would like to be part of the Prayer Link and pray for parishioners please contact Pat Wisialowski, Pastoral Associate. To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the Cathedral of an admittance, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered the second Saturday of the month at the 5:15 pm Mass.
