YEAR OF MERCY

St. Peter Parish Prayer

Lord, thank you for the rich history you have

bestowed on our family of St. Peter in Kirkwood.

Blessed by your grace, we ask that you be present

in our parish today. Guide us as we celebrate our

gifts through worship, education and loving service.

Holy Spirit, create within us a vision for the future that

we live, witness and proclaim the good news of Christ.

Amen

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016

Recently, we turned in our yearly report to the Archdiocese. It is

called by its Latin name, “Status Animarum,” or the “State of the

Souls” in St. Peter Parish. It records how our financial picture is,

our census of parishioners, and the number of people who

received the Sacraments the past year. One of the statistics

jumped off the page at me. We reported to the Archbishop

Carlson that St. Peter had 116 baptisms last year. That is up from

the year before and shows just how young our parish is becoming

and so many young families moving here and making Kirkwood

and St. Peter their home. So I decided to write to you about

baptism and its symbols.

The Signs of Baptism…Water

It was spring in our Midwestern world. The hope-for rains came,

softening the earth, preparing it to receive the seed that would

provide food for a nation. The rains went, the seed was planted.

The earth burst forth, green with life. And the rains never

returned. Crops died. The earth cracked. Farmers went broke. It

was 1934, the Great Depression, and now the dust bowl era began

blowing away rich topsoil and leaving a nation hungry. No water.

No rain. Thirsty soil.

Another spring…1993. The hoped-for rains finally came. The

drought was broken at last. The earth became soft again, healed

of its fractures. But the rains never left. Streams overran their

banks, rivers burst through levees. The Chesterfield Valley filled

with the waters of the Missouri River…the Monarch Levee was

breached. We should know by now that the Missouri and the

Mississippi Rivers cannot be walled in. They are too seasoned

and too powerful and too overwhelming to be told what to do.

Cars and cattle were washed away. Homes and fields and entire

neighborhoods were flooded. Snakes and animal life, man and

beast sought higher ground. When the water subsided, everything

was covered with a thick layer of mud…and the smell was

horrendous.

The spring of 2016, the gentle rains came and went. The earth,

wearing a new coat of fertile soil and holding reserves of water

deep beneath its surface, brought forth a great bounty.

The waters of baptism, like the Midwest’s rains and rivers, cannot

be tamed and controlled. They bring both life and death,

destruction and growth, fertility and barrenness. And always they

show the power of God.

Springs of water, bless the Lord.

Candle…Another Sign of Baptism

I remember back in 1990 when I was the pastor of Holy Cross

Church in Baden, North St. Louis and we were preparing to

celebrate the Great Easter Vigil in a couple of weeks. I was

lamenting the fact that living in the midst of the City it was

challenging to have a large Easter Fire. With all the city lights

and streetlights our courtyard was just too bright. You just have

to have darkness and the night to celebrate an Easter Vigil. I was

sharing my anxiety with the folks in our RCIA.

On Holy Saturday night before the Vigil began I was invited to

the convent for supper. I looked forward to it. We had rehearsed

all morning and into the afternoon for the Vigil. All was in

readiness for this venerable and holiest liturgy of the year. As

was sat down for dinner the doorbell rang and Sister Mary Grace

went to the door. After a few minutes she returned to say that one

of the RCIA catechumens was at the door and needed to speak to

me. I went to the door and asked Richard what he needed. He

proudly informed me that I need not worry about our Easter Fire

for the Vigil. We would have plenty of darkness now. I asked

why and what was he talking about. He excitedly informed me

that he heard my plight with the City lights and too much light for

the Vigil liturgy so he got his gun and shot out all the streetlights

on Church Road in front of the church and school. Yikes! I

oversold the need for darkness!!!! Did anyone see you? Not

wanting to dampen his enthusiasm I simply said, “Oh…thanks,

Richard, why don’t you go home now and put your gun away and

get ready for the Vigil…and let’s just keep this between you and

me.” Oh boy! I need to change my catechesis on the fire at the

Vigil. He was correct it was dark in the courtyard for the Easter

Fire that year and the fire never looked so bright or so grand. I

remember saying to the sisters afterward and laughing about the

incident that this year’s fire was a difference between night and

day from the fire the year before. The darkness made a

difference!

I thought about what I had just said and continued, “You know,

the difference between the fire last year and the fire this year is

like the difference between what life was like before Christ came

into the world, what life was like before Christ walked among us.

It was truly a difference between night and day. That’s why we

light a candle in the darkness, to remind us that Christ is our light.

We will never be the same.

Light of Christ. Thanks be to God.

Stewardship Financial Fact…

Did you know...St. Peter Parish spends on average

approximately $2,049,456 annually ($170,788 per month) on

faculty and school staff salaries to provide a quality and

Catholic education to the 468 students of our St. Peter School

and 366 PSR students?

Finally, cool weather and the feeling of Fall. Enjoy it, folks!

It is October, one of our best months in Missouri. Take a

Sunday drive to Highway 94 in St. Charles and visit some of

the wineries in Augusta and Defiance or our Highway 100 to

Hermann, Missouri to the Stone Hill Winery. Or go to

Eckert’s Orchards in Belleville and pick some apples. Or

check out a church sausage supper in Franklin County. Its

autumn…get out and enjoy the landscape, the foods and

sights and sounds of this season. And…I’ll see you in church!

TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE “My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise

received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between

us and you a great chasm is established...).” Luke 16:25-26

When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to

enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those

who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between

those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the

chasm in the next life.

how we are called upon as followers of Christ to help those in

need. With your support, the Society of St. Vincent dePaul re-

sponds to our neighbors reaching out to us for help. We provide

utility assistance, food, rent help, clothing, household necessities,

car repairs and prescription drug help. In addition we go into the

homes of those we serve to pray, identify other needs and offer

support.

Please continue to support the Society of St. Vincent dePaul by

using the offering envelopes mailed to your homes or the collec-

tion boxes at each church door exit. Also, please consider contri-

butions to St. Vincent dePaul in the loving memory of a family

member or friend.

If you know of someone that needs help, please have them call

(314) 289 6101 ext. 2220.
