Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today’s Gospel, Jesus healed the woman who had been sick for twelve years and also raised to life the dead daughter of the synagogue official . The Gospel tells us that the official desperately begged Jesus to save his daughter: “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” Also in the case of the sick woman: “She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse.” In these two circumstances, the official and the sick woman could not do anything to help themselves even the doctors who were not able to help them either. Howev-er, when hearing about the miraculous deeds Jesus performed, they immediately looked for Jesus and begged him for help. The official’s daughter was dying, the woman with hemorrhages was hopeless after trying many doctors, these two had nothing to lose when asking Jesus for healing. Everyday, people are dying, people are getting sick both body and mind, people are living in hopelessness and desperation. Everyday, so many illnesses and hurts are impossible to heal, many unfortunate circumstances are impossible to change, and many unwanted situations are impossible to re-verse. These are perhaps already happening in our lives and in our families, we try and cry but no one could help us, no one could understand us, no one could give us peace and comfort, and ultimately no one could heal us or our loved ones. We have nothing to lose by coming to Jesus, we should learn from the synagogue official’s humble faith and the sick woman’s total trust and confidence in Jesus’s divine power and healing. Let us come to touch and be touched by Jesus because only Jesus would have the power to heal, to change, and to make the impossible possible. -Fr. Joe Pham
