Dear Parishioners, Usually Fr. John Costello writes a weekly article in the bulletin to keep parishioners informed of eventsin the Church and in our parish community. For the next few weeks I will write to you about our plans forthe renovation of our sanctuary, which will likely take place this summer. I want to begin by expressing my thanks for the generous support of a number of parishioners who havemade donations to the project. I am encouraged by your willingness to contribute to this effort, and I assureyou that you will be pleased with the final results. I also want to acknowledge that there are parishionerswho are not supportive of the plans to renovate the sanctuary. I hope that this series of articles will help youto understand the rationale for the project and earn your trust and acceptance. When I was pastor of OurLady of the Snows Parish in Floral Park I experienced similar reactions to the project to build a new church;after the work was complete, all of those who initially did not support the project were proud and pleasedwith the final results. I am confident that we will have a similar experience here at St. Kevin Parish inFlushing. Many of you are homeowners. You know what it is like to make necessary improvements to your home, and you also make decisions about décor to suit your personal taste. Also, you know there can be a“domino effect” to your decisions: when you buy new furniture you sometimes replace the carpet and paintthe walls so that the whole room comes together with a new look. Sometimes you make changes becauseyou have no choice: when there is faulty wiring, the electrician needs to be called in to replace it. Othertimes you may simply grow tired of the old couch and decide to go with a new style of furniture to updateyour home. Our church was built in 1956, so it is almost 60 years old. In recent years, due to the vision and leadershipof Msgr. Finnerty and the generosity of parishioners, our building was improved with the addition of airconditioning and an elevator. The lower church became obsolete and so that space was renovated tobecome a Parish Center that is regularly used by many different groups in our community. However, themost important space in our church, the sanctuary, has virtually been left unchanged. The altar was movedforward a few feet and the tabernacle was moved to a side altar. A new chair was brought into thesanctuary. Although the Sacred Liturgy went through a major revision in the 1960s, very little was done toour sanctuary to fully comply with the new directives for the celebration of Mass. Next week I will begin tooutline the reasons for the revisions that are planned for our sanctuary.

In Christ,Bishop Raymond Chappetto

Page 6 Third Sunday of EasterStewardship Thought

As today’s gospel reveals, the first meal shared withthe risen Lord happened in a place called Emmaus.Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on thisstory than in those prayerful moments at Mass whenwe return to our place after receiving HolyCommunion. Those few moments give us anopportunity to reflect on our stewardship of Christ’spresence within us. We have a chance to practicehospitality by inviting Jesus into our hearts to walkand talk with us about our own Emmaus journey. We can relive once again the time when He brokebread for the disciples. And just as they did, we toocan recognize Christ in this meal we have justshared with others.

Stay With Us LordWalk with us, Lord, along the road of resurrection!

Explain for us, so slow to believe, the things that Scripture says of you.

Break the bread of the Eucharist with uswhenever we share our liveswith our brother and sisters.

Stay with us each time night approachesand the daylight fades in our hearts.
