Divine Mercy Sunday – Devotions

Ave Maria / St. Agnes

It was in the Jubilee year 2000, that our late and beloved Holy Father, Blessed Pope John Paul II established that the second Sunday of Easter is to be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” This observance is attributed to Saint Faustina Kowalska who, in a vision from

the Lord in the year 1931, was told to make the world more aware of Jesus as the one who is for us the Divine Mercy of God. Jesus needs us to continue to care for the needs of each other. Caring as Jesus does means living a life that offers hope that the Divine Mercy of God is open to all, especially those who are most in need of healing. This Sunday, April 7, 2013 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Ave Maria Church, Father Ed will lead a Eucharistic Holy Hour with Solemn Exposition, Benediction and Reposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Divine Mercy Chaplet and prayers will be offered during the Holy Hour. All are invited to participate in the Eucharistic Holy Hour, offering praise to God and praying for those in need of healing that each of us may be instruments to mirror the Divine Mercy of Jesus by our daily lives of faith. Please plan to join us for this hour of prayer and devotion!

Up in Holy Smoke with Father Mike! - All Parishes

Attention Men 18 and older: come out and join us on Wednesday April 17

th at 7PM at the Administration Center

next to St Thomas Aquinas Church where we will unite to pray, learn, and discuss how we as men face the tempta-tions of today’s world. As Christian men God has called us to be the spiritual leaders to our family, our community and protectors of our faith but as those, we are faced with daily temptations, and challenges that only other men may be able to relate to; so come on out and pray for strength in these daily struggles. Please bring a jacket because we will be smoking cigars outside. Cigars and fellowship will be supplied at this event.

Year of Faith” Pilgrimage - All Parishes

The Year of Faith Pilgrimage to Pittsburgh will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The bus will leave St. Thomas Aquinas parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and return around 11:00 p.m. Only 50 seats are available on the coach bus for this Faith-enhancing trip to visit St. Patrick’s Church, home of 1 of only 2 replicas of the Holy Stairs located in the United States. The Holy Stairs represent the 28 steps between Christ and Pilate when Pilate said, “Behold the Man” and condemned Jesus to death. As-cending the steps of the Holy Stairs is in union with Jesus’ sufferings and helps to bring us closer to Him and helps us appreciate what he suffered out of love for all of us. The second shrine on the Pilgrimage will be St. Anthony’s Chapel in Troy Hill. This chapel is dedicated to St. An-thony of Padua and houses the largest public collection of relics in the world (over 5000 relics). We will be attending Mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 6 pm. Dinner will be at Buca di Beppo Resturant. Included in the cost of the trip is transportation, donations to the shrines and dinner. The cost of the Pilgrimage is $75.00. Lunch is on your own. Call Nancy at 724-263-7180 to list your name. Your payment in full reserves your spot for this opportunity to renew your commitment to your faith. Prayer for Blessing of Homes

During the Easter Season Leader: Let us pray.

Lord, we rejoice in the victory of your

Son over death: by rising from the tomb to new

life he gives us new hope and promise.

Bless all the members of this household and surround them with your protection, that they may find comfort and peace in Jesus Christ, the paschal lamb, who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

(As circumstances suggest, you may take holy water from your church that is blessed during the Easter season and bless the members of your family and your home. During the sprinkling you may say):

Leader: Let this water call to mind our baptism in Christ, who by his death and resurrection has redeemed us. Concluding Rite:

Leader: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. Amen.

Religious Education / Faith Formation

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

Jesus connects PEACE and FORGIVE-NESS in today’s gospel. In our families we will only experience peace to the extent we forgive one another. Peace is purchased with the currency of forgive-ness. When we allow our anger and pride to lock out others, we also lock out peace and harmony.

Year of Faith: April 2013

Easter Time: Call to Evangelization

Meditation

Faith enabled the disciples to form the first community, united by the apostles’ teaching, common prayer, celebration of the aEucharist, and holding all possessions in common to provide for the needs of all (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 13).

In this Year of Faith, April encompasses Easter’s Fifty Days, during which Resurrection joy should overflow the hearts of be-lievers to refresh a parched and weary world with the revivifying waters of faith, hope, and charity. All month, at every Mass, we read Luke’s Acts of the Apostles, charting the young church’s Spirit-led journey, sometimes peaceful, sometimes persecuted, beset by enemies without and turmoil within. But this young church is always moving onward, from Jerusalem’s familiarity to the strangeness of every place between there and Rome; and outward, from an inherited Judaism’s comfortable uniformity to the Gentile world’s challenging diversity. A week after Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday invites us to renew our personal relationship with Jesus, a principal element of this Year of Faith. On the Third Sun-day of Easter, Peter’s net is not torn, despite its one hundred fifty-three fish (one of every kind!), an image of the Church’s unity-in-diversity safeguarded by communion with Peter. On Good Shep-herd Sunday, the church prays for priestly and religious voca-tions. All the while, Acts shows people drawn to the early Church because they had seen the Risen Jesus not in person, but in per-sons, in disciples who still form Christ’s living Body, the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Reverend Edward L. Yuhas Pastor

Ave Maria Parish and Saint Agnes Parish

Dear Friends in Christ:

The Church in her liturgy today observes what is called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” It was our late and beloved Holy Fa-ther, Blessed Pope John Paul II who, in the jubilee year 2000, established that the second Sunday of Easter is to be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday.”

This observance is attributed to Saint Faustina Kowalska who, in a vision from the Lord in the year 1931, was told to make the world more aware of Jesus as the one who is for us the Divine Mercy of God. In the vision to Faustina, the Lord appeared in a white robe, one of his hands was raised in a gesture of blessing and the other hand was touching his heart. From beneath the Lord’s garment, there were two rays, one red and the other a pale white. Jesus spoke to Faustina and told her that one ray represented his Precious Blood and the other water, which for us in the Church re-minds us of the Passion account of Good Friday when the soldier pierced the side of Jesus and the Scriptures tell us that from the side of our Lord’s body, there came flowing blood and water, a reminder to us of the Sacraments of Bap-tism and the Most Holy Eucharist.

At every celebration of the Mass, when the priest stands at the altar, he commemorates that moment when blood and water flowed from the pierced side of Jesus when the priest mixes a little water with the wine in the chalice. The priest, when mixing the water with the wine prays these words quietly to himself, saying: “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

As we continue the celebration of the glorious season of Easter through the liturgy for the next six weeks, this second Sunday of Easter is a powerful reminder of the Divine Mercy God has shown us in the gift of Jesus his Son. The meaning of the liturgy as we celebrate it today calls each of us to bear the Easter message of the Gospel that in every age Jesus needs us to continue to care for the needs of each other. Caring as Christ does means living a life that offers hope that the Lord’s Divine Mercy is open to all people, especially those who are most in need of healing. May we strive to mirror the Divine Mercy of Christ in our daily lives of faith.

DO NOT BE AFRAID

Did you notice? Today is called the “Second Sunday of Easter,” not the “First Sunday after Easter.” Our celebration of Easter is not over. These Sun-days of Easter continue to pre-sent the mystery of Jesus Christ’s victory. The readings begin with the “signs and wonders” abounding in those earliest days. Sick peo-ple lay in the street, hoping that at least Peter’s “shadow might fall on one or another of them.” Then, in a powerful passage from the book of Revelation, the

visionary falls down “as though dead” upon seeing the victo-rious Christ. But Christ extends a gentle touch: “Do not be afraid . . . once I was dead, but now I am alive forever.” In the Gospel, that same Christ appears and breathes on the disciples, and gently leads Thomas to believe. This Christ—more powerful than any evil force, victorious over death itself—touches us and whispers, “Do not be afraid.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
