YACHT CLUB type / semester workshop, HEPIAcompletion / 2010 location / Vésenaz, Geneva, Switzerlandprogram / yacht club, restaurant, administration, boat parkingsupervisor / Sam Voltolini

The site is located between the lake and the hillside of Cologny, along the straight quay. This situation between land and water gives it a spe-cial atmosphere in the exceptional surrounding landscape.

In an effort to shut out the world and nuisances of the road, the pro-ject resembles a concrete wall separating the coast from the lake. Diagonal passages achieve this space between land and water while blocking outside views.

Each concrete shell contains a programmatic element. They open on the lake side while a services strip reinforces the large aspect of the wall situated near the road.

Exposed concrete shells are coated with a waterproof resin, and are isolated from the inside. An overhead opening brings light into the services strip.

The former industrial area is planned to be renewed and densified to compensate for the lack of housing and become a new urban center. The plot is situated at the entrance of the future district.

The existing block system is extended, generating a space that ac-commodates a green promenade. The plot’s natural slope will be in-corporated in the project.

It appears in the cross section of the block along the road, as the apartments, offices and commercial areas grow on half levels. The block located inside the district welcomes mainly work units on the ground floor connected with an apartment on the top floor.

The gray hue of the precast concrete facade highlights the contrast between mineral and vegetal and takes the appearance of the sur-rounding urban buildings to connect the new district to the historic city.

To better exploit the former industrial area of Biel, we seek to create a new housing density on these plots located near the city center. The chosen site is bisected by a river which creates two intervention areas.

The idea here was to recreate a system of small courtyards carved into the density as we can observe in old swiss villages. The left plot allows to establish the standard plan of a multiple courtyards building. On the right one, extensions are added to the industrial block, recrea-ting small courtyards on the same typological principle.

The building’s size varies to adapt to the flared shape of the plot. The typologies range from 2.5 rooms to 6.5 rooms.

The outside facade’s precast concrete elements revolve around the building as do the rooms in the plan, while inside, dug by the entrance loggias, the facade becomes more domestic.

BIRTH OF NEW URBAN MIXED USE BLOCKtype / Master’s degree project, EPFLcompletion / 2014location / Petit-Saconnex, Geneva, Switzerlandprogram / social+student housing, Mediatheque, community centersupervisor / Bruno Marchand

The proposed principle is to densify public facilities to provide housing in the city by encouraging a mixed use development.

The project proposes to combine an existing school with a new stu-dent and social housing building.

Operating as an extension of the school building, the new construction completes and opens up the existing system into the park, offering its program to the neighbourhood. A new square links the elements of the park and places the historic buildings of the neighborhood in the center.

The existing structure follows a grid, which will establish the rules of construction of the new building. Its architectural expression is a continuation of the existing style. The facade is an assembly of pre-cast concrete elements whose basic unit is the room. It undergoes variations according to the use of each floor.

Two residential variants will arise from the orientation of each strip of villas and their proximity to a busy street : a lower one, with an elongated and narrow plan lit by patios, and a higher one, with a shorter plan extended by loggias.

Both typologies take place between two blades of carrier concrete and vary depending on the arrangement of services and outdoor spaces.

The first, with a thin plan, consists of a strip containing the services and a strip containing the living areas separated and illuminated by courtyards.

The second one consists of a distribution corridor and a central service core around which revolve the living spaces.

HOUSING BLOCKtype / Bachelor’s degree project, HEPIAcompletion / 2010location / Carouge, Geneva, Switzerlandprogram / housing, café, community centersupervisor / Lorenzo Lotti

The project proposes a housing block reinterpreting in a more current way the principle of the passageways, which are strongly present in the historical district of Carouge.

Here, passageway’s bearings distribute the entrance to the apartment and extend to become balcony.

The entrances situated on the street side allow to orient living spaces on the courtyard side in or-der to create life on the Theatre Square. The southeast oriented typologies with a common space crossing, range from 2.5 to 4.5 rooms.

Sliding wooden shutters allow the darkening of the façade suggesting the ancient wooden pas-sageways of the neighborhood.

REALIZATIONS

For its 34th edition in 2009, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, the Paleo Festival in Nyon hosted the « Mangroove » ins-tallation.

12 students of HEPIA create a universe in which festival goers immerse themselves in the mud of a mangrove with psychedelic influences.

In the middle of a root system of galleries, a space opens to the sky and hosts the « mud bath ». Around this space are the different stands of the universities participating in the festival .

The main structure is made with scaffolding elements and saplings assembled by students. The work, ranging from design to completion of the installation, also included the creation of posters, T-shirts and website. The project was subject of radio and television program and newspaper articles.

REALIZATIONS

The location of the existing house on this diamond-shaped plot gene-rated many residual spaces in the garden.

The project, which required that the living area was doubled, is to restore a relationship with different parts of the garden by occupying its limits.

Three U-shaped service elements articulate the plan of the ground floor. The first serves the common areas of the kitchen, the dining room and the library. The second serves the parent’s bedroom and include the vertical circulation that leads to the attic. The third element defines the children’s rooms.

A large mineral roofing covers and unifies the whole building. It ap-pears as a faceted volume, organic and heavy, lying on thin wood studs composing the facade.

REALIZATIONS

Cities’ development in Thailand takes less and less account of the vernacular architecture of the country. This knowledge, which was once known by families who used to build their own homes and teach to the next generation, tends to get lost.

In order to preserve it, Sahai Nan’s Permaculture Farm’s organization decided to build a center, a traditional Thai farm, where people could come to study permaculture and Thai vernacular architecture.

It is in the jungle of Nan’s province, that our group of 10 volunteers learned to build everything needed to live with available materials.

The job consisted in organizing and planning the future farm on the site, make a filter for drinking water, build traditional bamboo huts, install a water system and organic showers and toilets, plant and grow a vegetable garden vegetable and finally find solutions to get and use solar, hydro or wind energies on the site.

SCHOOL AND ORPHANAGE IN CAMBODIAtype / project for “Caring for Poor and Orphan Children“ organizationcompletion / 2015location / Takeo Province, Cambodiaprogram / school, farm, volunteers houses, orphanagesupervisor / Ny Kim

Caring for Poor and Orphan Children orphanage is located in Takeo’s province, south of Phnom Penh. 12 children live there permanently, and others occasionally when they have problems at home. During the day, basic English classes are given for children who attend it after public school. About 200 children come to learn and play every week.

The current center is located close to the road crossing the village, frequented by vehicles going south. This is not an optimal situation for children playing outside or cycling.

After receiving a donation, the CPOC was able to buy a piece of land in the village, close to the children’s homes and safe from the road.

After learning about local construction methods from villagers, the project of a new school, houses for volunteers, an orphanage and a farm was born. The project is thought to be realized by volunteers.
