Ambassador Club Makes Donation to Local Schools The Ambassador Club presented MindsEye - the Virtual Newsstand with the Commitment to Community Award on Thursday, December 4th. This award is presented quarterly to a Chamber member who demonstrates commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and/or businesses in the greater Belleville area. MindsEye has been providing reading services for people who are blind or visually impaired in the St. Louis region since 1973. The station is broadcast from the grounds of The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows where it was founded with the help of Fr. Boniface Wittenbrink, OMI, Fr. Boni for short. In the 1970’s, a member of the Lions Club heard about a reading service being formed in Minnesota as an economical and efficient way to provide the visually impaired with readings of the daily newspaper. In his search to find a station who would provide like service, he came across The Shrine Oblates who assigned Fr. Boni to assist in starting the service with the Oblate owned radio station, WMRY-FM. Upon being assigned the project, Fr. Boni stated, “I don’t know anything about radios except how to turn one on and change the batteries and I sure don’t know anything about blind people except that they can’t see. But if you think I can help, I’ll do it.” Since its founding, MindsEye’s programming has grown and now informs and entertains more than 12,000 listeners throughout the community. The service provides listeners with reading of local and national publications, the local ads, recipes, reviews of local restaurants, local events, entertainment news, business news, health news and much more. More than half of MindsEye’s 132 hours of unique programming focuses on local news, information or entertainment. The station is able to continue to carry out its mission and provide this free service with more than 200 volunteers who provide service at MindsEye each year, carrying on the spirit of Fr. Boni. Most are not professional radio broadcasters and, for some, their experience in reading does not extend past reading aloud to their children, but all have a passion for providing information. MindsEye’s programming is not only heard in the Belleville and St. Louis area, it’s also heard on many other reading services around the world as MindsEye provides over 50 hours of programming each week to other reading services through IAAIS Program Share. Listeners can choose to listen via a free radio receiver or online. Congratulations, MindsEye, for your continued service to both the local and worldwide community! BREAST HEALTH CENTER AT MEMORIAL IS FIRST IN AREA TO OFFER NEW 3-D MAMMOGRAPHYThe Breast Health Center at Memorial will begin providing 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) this week for breast cancer screening. Memorial is the first hospital in the metro-east to offer this newest breast imaging modality.

Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. The Hologic system used by Memorial offers exceptionally sharp breast images and an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort.

“We believe breast tomosynthesis will benefit all screening and diagnostic mammography patients and is especially valuable for women receiving baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and/or women with a personal history of breast cancer,” said James Clanahan, M.D., medical director of The Breast Center at Memorial and general surgeon with Lincoln Surgical.

The tomosynthesis screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D construction of the breast.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, The Breast Health Center at Memorial expects to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a women’s chance of survival; if detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

The Breast Health Center at Memorial is committed to providing the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 618-257-5960.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S TEACHING HOSPITAL HONORS RN RESIDENTS AT TRANSITION CEREMONYA Transition Ceremony and reception was recently held for 16 Registered Nurses who completed St. Elizabeth’s Versant RN Residency Program. Residents and mentors for the program were noted and thanked for their dedication and commitment to offering high-quality care during the 18-week program. They also were commended for exhibiting the Core Values of Respect, Care, Competence and Joy.

Jackie Feldhake, from Rehab, and Marla Carpizo, from CCU, were named Star Preceptors for their unwavering commitment and dedication to the RN Residents during the program. Other Star Preceptor nominees included: Jamie Deem (PCU), Vicki Hamer (ED), Ashley Hundelt (MS), Christy Kristek (PCU), Angela Labadie (PCU), Megan Meidlinger (PCU), Cory Persons (MB), Lindsey Renk (OR), Kim Struckhoff (L&D) and Michelle Williams (PCU).

During the program, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital President and CEO, Maryann Reese, noted that she began her career as an registered nurse and encouraged the residents to continue to learn, grow and have the courage to challenge themselves by “saying yes” when offered new opportunities during their nursing careers. “You never know where saying yes will take you. You may even have the opportunity to serve as a CEO one day.”

RN Resident Geri Clark, from the ED, addressed the audience on behalf of the transitioning resident cohort and shared that all of her fellow residents enjoyed learning in St. Elizabeth’s supportive, compassionate environment and are looking forward to what the future holds for their nursing careers.

“Our new graduates join the many past residents and our other dedicated nursing staff as qualified and independent professional RNs providing high-quality health care to our patients,” said Sharon Busch, RN Residency Manager. “In fact, many of our former RN Residents now serve in leadership roles and as mentors for the residency program today.”

The Versant RN Residency is a comprehensive, evidence-based onboarding of new graduate nurses that helps them gain the experience, critical reasoning, skills and confidence they need to navigate the complexity of a hospital health care setting. St. Elizabeth’s Hospital began this innovative and exciting program for new graduate Registered Nurses in July 2006, and it has successfully grown ever since with approximately 225 transitioning from the program since its inception. The Versant RN Residency was the first Residency of this type in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

“Qualified RN retention is a major goal of hospitals in general, and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital continues to be at the forefront with our RN Residency Program,” shared Busch.

Residents are hired as full-time colleagues and remain full-time on their unit after they successfully complete the program. Components of the curriculum include 75 percent of clinical time and 25 percent classroom time. Individual preceptor teams as well as individual mentors are assigned to each participant. This innovative, one-on-one attention prevents novice nurses from feeling overwhelmed in their first year of work. Debriefing and colleague support groups are also provided throughout the residency and during their first year at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, which helps residents to progress to high competence levels quickly, safely and efficiently. Learn more about St. Elizabeth’s RN Residency Program at www.steliz.org/teachinghospital, or contact Sharon Busch at 618.234.2120, ext. 1098.

A NIGHT OUT WITH THE BLUES - 126TH AIR REFUELING WING, SCOTT AFB, ILL.Approximately 100 members of the 126th Air Refueling Wing, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., Illinois Air National Guard, attended the Nov. 11 Military Appreciation St. Louis Blues hockey game for free, thanks to the generosity of Scott Credit Union. Scott Credit Union made an exclusive donation of $2,500 to the 126th ARW, which allowed about 100 Wing members to attend the game for free. In addition to their free ticket, attendees also received a free regular soda and hot dog.

“We realize the sacrifice that our service men and women make every day for all of us,” said Scott Credit Union President & CEO Frank Padak. “We were very happy to be able to give something back. This is just a small token of Scott Credit Union’s appreciation for what they do for us.”

The entire game was set up for the military. The 126th ARW’s Honor Guard presented the colors before the game.

“It was impressive to see members of the military recognized at the Blues game,” said SCU Community Relations Representative Carol Wylie. “What a tribute to them and their commitment to our freedom and safety. It was an honor to be there for the military appreciation night.” For details on opening accounts at Scott Credit Union, visit www.scu.org.

LOCAL CHURCHES UPGRADE FACILITIES WITH HELP FROM IMPACT STRATEGIES Construction-management firm IMPACT Strategies today announced it has completed two separate construction projects for First Baptist Church in Columbia, Ill., and Cornerstone Christian Church in Shiloh., Ill.

In November 2013, IMPACT began constructing a new $3.9 million 31,000-square-foot building for First Baptist Church located at 1200 Valmeyer Road in Columbia, Ill. The company succeeded in preparing and grading the site’s groundwork, a densely covered forest that required a lot of tree removal and ground preparation, before the harsh winter weather set in. Construction moved forward as planned and completed on time this month. The new facility, designed by Quadrant Design, Inc., of Waterloo, has a 700-seat sanctuary and educational classrooms, providing the congregation the opportunity to worship and learn under one roof. Prior to having the new building, the congregation utilized a separate house on its property for its student ministry.

Earlier this summer, IMPACT started an interior remodel project in collaboration with architect Mantel Teter of Kansas City, Mo., at Cornerstone Christian Church on Greenmount Road in Shiloh. The church remained operational during the remodel, which involved the demolition of 2,100 square feet of office space that was converted into a café. The new space features a concrete floor finished to resemble a wood plank floor, custom casework for a coffee bar, and a fireplace. As part of the renovations, a fire protection system was added to the building, including the addition of a new water service for the fire protection system. Another 16,700 square feet received upgraded finishes including carpet, vinyl plank floor, vinyl base paint, and a new integrated audio/ visual system. This project also wrapped up in September. I first chose TheBANK of Edwardsville because of their better interest rates and all theproducts and services they offer ... And I’ve remained with TheBANK of Edwardsvillebecause of the great personal service I’ve received.

As a business owner, that personal service is so important. With the big banks, decisionshave to be processed, and usually they’re not processed locally. With TheBANK, it’s alllocal. The decisions are made locally and quickly. So it’s like having your own hometownpersonal banker.

It’s been a great relationship. TheBANK’s big enough that they can offer all the productsand conveniences a business owner wants and needs, yet small enough that they return aphone call in a day’s time. That’s the service that every business owner is looking for.

IMPACT STRATEGIES STARTS CONSTRUCTION ON COTTAGES AT CATHEDRAL SQUARE IN BELLEVILLE Construction-management firm IMPACT Strategies today announced that construction has recently begun on the long anticipated senior living community, Cottages at Cathedral Square in Belleville, Illinois. The $6+ million, 32-unit residential community is bordered by South First Street, South Second Street, West Harrison Street, and West Garfield Street. Numerous homes were previously removed on this site along with a former pants factory that was demolished earlier this year in preparation for the new development. Cottages Limited Partnership of Chicago is developing the property, the plans for which were initially conceived by leaders of Cathedral parish.

Cottages at Cathedral Square will have five buildings totaling more than 31,000 square feet. The community’s exterior, designed by EWR Associates of Fairview Heights, will reflect the old-school charm of Belleville yester-year. The property neighbors St. Peter’s Cathedral and the McCormik Center, and is just two blocks from the St. Clair County Courthouse. Cottages at Cathedral Square is expected to serve as a strong anchor to help revitalize the neighborhoods around St. Peter’s Cathedral.

Scott Manning, project manager for IMPACT Strategies, said, “Now that demolition and site work have been completed, we’re able to start constructing the framework for the buildings. If the weather cooperates, we hope to get a number of buildings weather tight before the harsh winter weather sets in, which will allow us to continue work on the building interiors.”

Construction on the Cottages at Cathedral Square is expected to be complete by September 2015. The project is one of several multi-housing and senior living projects built by IMPACT Strategies throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area, including Cedarhurst of Edwardsville; Cedarhurst of Shiloh; Amy’s Crossing in Alton; Hospice of Southern Illinois Residence Center in Edwardsville, and Enclave West student housing community also in Edwardsville.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL RECEIVES ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY ACCREDITATION - NEW ACCREDITATION SERVES AS “SEAL OF APPROVAL” FOR HIGH-QUALITY CAREHSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has recently been granted a three-year term of accreditation in Echocardiography in the areas of Adult Transthoracic and Adult Stress by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).

An echocardiogram is a safe, non-invasive procedure used to examine your heart and potentially diagnose problems. It uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to literally see all four chambers of the heart, the heart valves, the great blood vessels entering and leaving the heart, as well as the sac around the heart. Information obtained through Echocardiography examinations is extremely helpful to physicians in diagnosing a variety of conditions related to heart disease and disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Accreditation by the IAC means that St. Elizabeth’s echocardiography (Echo) lab has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The IAC grants accreditation to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including detailed case study review.

While early detection of life threatening heart disorders and other diseases is possible through the use of Echocardiography procedures, there are many aspects that contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on Echocardiography testing. The skill of the Echocardiography sonographer performing the examination, the type of equipment used, the background and knowledge of the interpreting physician and quality assurance measures are each critical to quality patient testing.

“IAC accreditation serves as a ‘seal of approval’ that our patients can rely on as an indication of high quality care,” noted Bonita Schnieder, Director of Cardiovascular Services at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Under the direction of Dr. Regina Chiu of Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants and Medical Director of the Echo Lab at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, we are privileged to offer region-leading heart care and we continue to work diligently to offer the best outcomes possible.”

IAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, as illustrated by the support of the national medical societies related to Echocardiography, which include physicians and sonographers. Echocardiography accreditation is required in some states and regions by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and by some private insurers. However, patients should remain vigilant in making sure that their Echocardiography procedures are performed within accredited facilities, because for many facilities accreditation remains a voluntary process. The IAC encourages all patients who are scheduled for a Echocardiography procedure to learn more by visiting www.intersocietal.org/echo/main/patients.htm. For more information about services at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, or full a list of hospital accreditations, visit www.steliz.org.
