The Ambassador Club awarded Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing their quarterly Commitment to Community Award. John Wunderlich, Ambassador Club Chairman, presented the award to Robert G. Fritz Jr., Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing, at the Ambassador Club’s monthly luncheon meeting. Started by a young Chick Fritz on July 1, 1947 in Mascoutah, Illinois, Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing has made it part of their business model to give back to the community. Following the passing of his employer, Chick purchased Schopp Distributing and was ready to open the type of distributorship he had envisioned, providing friendly, reliable service. For almost 68 years, Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing has continued to carry out their founder’s vision. In the early days of Chick Fritz Distributing, many retailers and restaurants used non-electric ice boxes. Knowing this, Chick Fritz and his crew delivered ice blocks with their beer to maintain the quality of the beer along with other foods. As the use of modern appliances spread across the region, ice block deliveries were no longer needed and the expansion of microbreweries emerged, changing the beer industry. For the next 30 years, a series of mergers and buyouts would result in the expansion of Chick Fritz Distributing from serving the local area to other communities in St. Clair County as well as Monroe and Randolph Counties. In 1957, Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing added Miller Brewing Company products to their portfolio. Throughout the 1970’s and beyond, new and unique beers were introduced, including Miller Lite in 1970, along with Coors in 1985. With the launch of Coors in Illinois, Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing was awarded the Coors Brewing franchise, which allowed the distributor to reach an impressive milestone of one million cases delivered annually in 1986. Robert ‘Chick’ Fritz Distributing has continued to grow and is the largest beer distributor in Southern Illinois. They have won several national awards including the MillerCoors President's Award and Heineken’s Red Star Award. Distributing a variety of products to communities all over Southern Illinois including the Springfield region, they continue to provide service and pride themselves on remaining “Your Friendly Distributor.” In 1972 they made their move to Belleville and started to become more involved. Saturday was the BBQ Challenge which brought several thousand people downtown to sample barbeque from 12 local barbeque masters, all fighting to be this year’s winner. The crowd was able to purchase tasty samples and full meals from the vendors and vote for their favorites. This year’s winners in the BBQ Challenge were BBQ Boys - First Place, Beast Craft BBQ - Second Place, and Righteous Pig - Third Place. The day was made enjoyable with entertainment from Old Salt Union, Rat Rod Kings and DJ Benny. Not to be left out, children enjoyed the petting zoo of Rainbow Ranch and face painting by Mysti Clemmer.

The kick-off for the 2015-2016 Leadership Belleville Class is right around the corner. Leadership Belleville is a great program for professionals of any age to learn more about how they can be a leader in their community, business and personal life. The nine month program is structured for all career stages.
The goals of the program are to: Develop effective community leaders Establish valuable relationships with business and civic leaders Expand awareness and understanding of important issues affecting business and the community Foster a commitment to personal, professional and community growth Provide opportunities for on-going business development, growth & expansion within the Belleville area
Classes are composed of up to 25 professionals who demonstrate the highest leadership qualities. These classmates create a valuable network of resources – paying dividends to both alumni and their business sponsors.
Classmates grow together throughout the program at the monthly day dedicated to a specific issue or subject pertaining to the Belleville area, including history, arts, religion, government, business and industry, education, healthcare, community and aging, economic development, law enforcement and
justice. Participants are given the chance to meet and engage business, community and political leaders during each session.

FRIENDS OF ST. ELIZABETH’S ANNOUNCE NAME CHANGE TO HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S FOUNDATION HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is proud to announce that “Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital” is changing its name to the HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation. The new name better reflects the mission and role as the philanthropic arm of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, making it clearer who we are and what we do. The change will officially take place on July 1, 2015.
While the name has changed, the purpose of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation remains the same. It will continue to serve as a local avenue for community giving and volunteering to ensure the best health care possible for the patients served at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Every dollar raised by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation directly impacts the care our patients receive.
Just a few of the Foundation’s recent fund donations have gone toward the purchase of a large-scale decontamination tent, two Xenex UV light disinfection units, furniture for waiting areas of the Emergency Room, UrgiCare and Surgery area, and many other technologies and systems throughout the facility.
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation remains an integral part of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, which serves all 14 HSHS hospitals throughout Illinois and Wisconsin, and assures that all funds raised stay local and are appropriately administered to provide the greatest impact for our region. SCOTT CREDIT UNION HELPS OVER 1,800 STUDENTS LEARN TO HANDLE MONEY DURING SCHOOL YEARMore than 1,800 students from seven area schools had the opportunity to face their financial future this past school year during CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fairs aimed at helping them learn financial skills they will use the rest of their lives. Scott Credit Union sponsored 17 CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fairs to teach students the important skills that will equip them to handle money responsibly, set and adhere to budgets, and avoid the pitfalls of debt.
During the fairs, the students had to make life-like decisions about handling the expenses of housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, food, and other necessities, according to Scott Credit Union Community Relations Supervisor Jennifer Hess. Students from high schools and middle schools in O’Fallon, Troy, Collinsville, Highland, Mascoutah and Belleville attended fairs conducted by Scott Credit Union representatives at their schools. Students at the Youth Center at Scott Air Force Base also participated in a financial fair. The CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair is an event that gave middle school and high school students a chance to see how career selection impacts their financial well-being and their life choices. Participants were challenged with creating a spending plan based on a salary. Then they had to juggle needs versus wants to make sure they were living within their means.
The CU 4 Reality program was developed by the Financial Literacy Education Committee of America’s Credit Union Museum, in conjunction with the New Hampshire Credit Union League.
“We are proud to be the first financial institution in our area bringing this type of experience to the students in our area,” Hess said. “We encourage other area high schools to call on us to present the program at their schools. ABBOTT EMS CELEBRATES NATIONAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK: LOCAL LIFESAVERS HONORED AND CPR TRAINING PROVIDEDAbbott EMS of Illinois and Missouri recognized Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Dispatchers from across the region on May 19th, 2014 at their annual Clinical Save Awards Ceremony and dinner at Our Lady of the Snows. This event recognized those emergency medical service (EMS) providers whose skill and knowledge resulted in what is called a “Clinical Save” during calendar year 2014. A Clinical Save occurs when a patient’s heartbeat has stopped but is restarted and maintained by emergency medical care long enough to admit the patient to the hospital. As part of this annual ceremony, Abbott EMS also recognized local fire departments and police agencies who participated in any Clinical Save. The ceremony also includes presentation of the “Bridge to Life” award which recognizes hospitals and nursing facilities who played a role in a Clinical Save. Willow Creek Nursing Center, Midwest Respiratory and Rehabilitation, and Caseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation were honored with awards this year for starting CPR prior to calling 911. Belleville Memorial Hospital and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as well as two Madison County hospitals were presented the Bridge to Life award for continuing the lifesaving process for patients delivered to them by Abbott EMS.
Abbott EMS, an American Medical Response company, also participated in AMR’s annual nationwide EMS Week CPR Challenge on May 20th by providing hands-on training of compression-only CPR to almost 500 residents of the communities they serve. Compression-only CPR allows bystanders to keep life-saving blood flowing through a victim’s body just by pressing correctly on the chest in a hard, fast rhythm. Bystanders who provide compression-only CPR can greatly increase the chances of survival for a cardiac-arrest victim.

Chamber Member UpdateBOARD NAMES BARBARA A. HOHLT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ST. CLAIR COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENTMs. Barbara A. Hohlt, B.S., L.E.H.P., R.E.H.S. was appointed as Executive Director of the St. Clair County Health Department by the St. Clair County Board of Health. The appointment is effective July 1, 2015.
“Ms. Hohlt serves the residents of St. Clair County as a competent and proven leader who works continuously to provide programs and services for the betterment of public health,” said St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern. “She is an excellent leader, who is active in many community and volunteer organizations. Her dedicated service to St. Clair County is greatly appreciated.”
Ms. Hohlt started her career in Public Health in 1984 as a Sanitarian with the Bond County Health Department in Greenville, IL. She joined the St. Clair County Health Department in 1986 as a Sanitarian conducting food inspections, private water supplies, nuisance complaints and private sewage disposal. Through the years, Ms. Hohlt’s career has advanced to her current position of Deputy Executive Director of the Health Department. Prior to becoming Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Hohlt served as the Director ofHealth Protection where she was responsible for overall administration of Health Protection Programs, including Environmental Health, Environmental Protection, Infectious Disease Control and Emergency Management and a staff of 22 employees.
Ms. Hohlt stated, “I am truly honored and humbled to become the second Executive Director of the St. Clair County Health Department which is a nationally accredited public health agency, with dedicated staff and an abundance of community partners. With over 30 years of public health experience, 28 years with this agency, I have experienced many changes and challenges in public health practice. My goal is to best utilize our resources to provide programs and services specific to meet the needs of our public health community.”
Aside from her professional accomplishments, Ms. Hohlt is widely known for her involvement in numerous volunteer efforts throughout St. Clair County. Some of Ms. Hohlt’s volunteer activities include serving as a board member for the St. Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises (SAVE), board member for the Metro East Parks and Recreation District (MERPD), member of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers for Hospice of Southern Illinois, the Dr. Willard C. Scrivner Public Health Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Originally from Nashville, IL, Ms. Hohlt received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the School of Agriculture, Animal Industries from Southern Illinois University—Carbondale. She is also a Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner, a Registered Environmental Health Specialist along with many other certifications and licensures.
“I am confident that Ms. Hohlt will continue to carry out the responsibilities of Executive Director with the same high level of professionalism and dedication that she has demonstrated during the past 28 years we have worked together,” said Kevin Hutchison, retiring Executive Director.
