HOERNIS AUTO BODY ACHIEVES GOLD CLASS STATUS: THE COLLISION REPAIR INDUSTRY’S HIGHEST TRAINING RECOGNITION Hoernis Auto Body in Belleville today announced its achievement of Gold Class status, the industry standard for training that con-tributes to complete and safe repairs. Only 10 percent of collision repair businesses currently meet the rigorous training require-ments necessary to earn the Gold Class designation.

Gold Class shops are required to have every technician involved in collision repair take training that is specific to their roles. They must continue with ongoing training each year for the business to maintain its Gold Class recognition, including classes in new technology.

Today’s vehicles are increasingly sophisticated devices featuring an ever-growing number of components, parts and advanced lightweight materials. The constant introduction of new vehicle technologies can result in repair procedures changing significantly from year to year, making current repair knowledge critical for the achievement of complete and safe repairs.

“Hoernis Auto Body is honored to be named a Gold Class collision repair facility,” said Steve Hoernis of Hoernis Auto Body. “We are proud of our commitment to training because it is also a symbol of our commitment to professionalism and to the safety of our customers.”

The Gold Class designation is awarded by I-CAR, a not-for-profit training organization dedicated to improving the quality and safety of auto collision repair for the ultimate benefit of consumers.

Located at 207 S. 20th Street in Belleville, Hoernis Auto Body is one of the largest and most respected collision repair centers in Southern Illinois. For more information about Hoernis Auto Body, call (618) 234-6538, find them on Facebook or visit

Hoernis will graduate as one of fewer than 100 other automotive professionals in the State of Illinois to complete the program since it’s inception 20 years ago. The AAM designation has become a cornerstone in professionalizing automotive service management.

Hoernis began his career in the auto body industry in 1993 as part owner of Hoernis Auto Body. His primary role at Hoernis is customer service and management. As one of the longest-operating auto body shops in the Metro East, Hoernis Auto Body has been in the collision repair business for 50 years and continues to provide exceptional customer service.

According to Steve Hoernis, “My interest in completing the AAM designation was to position our business for continued growth by gaining even more knowledge about how to successfully manage and operate an auto body shop in today’s marketplace. Our standard of customer service has always been one of excellence and priority. This designation gives us an even greater advantage in taking our staff, services and customer care to an even higher level.”

In addition to this professional designation, Hoernis has a bachelor of science in business administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is an advisory member of Southwestern Illinois College’s Repair School. He and his wife, Lori, live in Waterloo. They have two children.

Located at 207 S. 20th Street in Belleville, Hoernis Auto Body is one of the largest and most respected collision repair centers in Southern Illinois. For more information about Hoernis Auto Body, call (618) 234-6538, find them on Facebook or visit http://www.hoernisautobody.com.

PHYSICAL THERAPY PATIENTS AT ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL ARE ‘WALKING ON AIR’ IN NEW ALTERG® ANTI-GRAVITY TREADMILLSt. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s Outpatient Physical Therapy is pleased to introduce cutting edge physical therapy to the region. The AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill brings technological advances to physical rehabilitation and sports training, is one of only two locations in the metro-east to offer the equipment to the public.

The AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill utilizes NASA-patented Differential Air Pressure “unweighting” technology, which works by inflating an air chamber in order to reduce stress on the body’s lower extremities. This allows users to run or walk with up to 80% of their actual body weight supported. A three-camera video system also allows patients and physical therapists to view movements for instant feedback for improved performance each session.

The benefit of this gravity control is less impact on joints and muscles, which results in less pain for the patient. Other benefits include: • Reduction of stress on joints and injured areas of the lower body• Improved gait patterns to increase endurance and decrease deviations• Increased safety during treatment for patients to perform more standing activities

“With this new equipment, patients can begin rehabilitation sooner following an injury, especially those post-surgical patients who may have been given a weight restriction,” states Sarah Karban, PT, Outpatient Therapy Manager at St. Elizabeth’s. “We are extremely grateful to the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s for providing funding. It will greatly enhance the recovery and quality of life of many of our patients.”

A grant of $40,000 from the Friends of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital made the purchase of this new machine possible. “We are proud to help our Outpatient PT Department better serve the recovery needs of patients by approving the purchase of this advanced technology,” states Carol Wylie, Director of Philanthropy at St. Elizabeth’s.

St. Elizabeth’s has therapists that specialize in integrating this technology into a comprehensive rehabilitation program for a variety of therapy needs including muscle strengthening after a total joint replacement, following lower extremity injury, for neurological diagnosis, weight loss and conditioning in a fall-safe environment.

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is one of only two locations in the metro-east to offer this technology to the public. A physician’s referral is required. To learn more about the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill, contact Karban at 618-234-2120, ext. 1705.

ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL NAMED ONE OF 21 EMERGENT STROKE READY HOSPITALS IN ILLINOISSt. Elizabeth’s Hospital was recently designated as an Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital by the Illinois Department of Public Health. St. Elizabeth’s achieved this special designation by implementing emergency stroke care policies and procedures to align with na-tionally recognized evidence based standards and criteria, like those from the American Heart/Stroke Association and Brain Attack Coalition.

“We are pleased to receive the Emergent Stroke Ready designation as St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is the only Emergent Stroke Ready Hospital in the Metro East and is one of only 21 hospitals in the Illinois to achieve this designation,” said Dr. Shelly Harkins, Chief Medical Officer for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Receiving this high-level designation once again reaffirms our commitment to offering region leading, high-quality stroke care for all residents of the Metro East.”

St. Elizabeth’s chose to apply for the Emergent Stroke Ready Designation after implementing its Stroke Telemedicine Program, in partnership with C30 Stroke Telemedicine Services, in December 2013. The telemedicine services offer real-time access to world class neurologists using an audio and video connection through a telemedicine robot.

“In the event of a stroke, ‘time is brain’ as patients need to receive possible life-saving treatment as soon as possible,” noted Alison Kennedy, BSN, RN and Stroke Coordinator at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “With our new Emergent Stroke Ready designation and partnership with C3O Stroke Telemedicine, EMS providers can confidently bring stroke patients to St. Elizabeth’s, where they will receive appropriate treatments immediately to ensure the best possible outcomes. Seeking treatment at a prepared facility can make a great difference in patient outcomes and quality of life. This may even make the difference between life and death.” Kennedy encourages all community members to learn how to spot a stroke and “ACT F.A.S.T.” as every hour into a stroke, the brain is aged 3.6 years and someone dies as a result of a stroke every 3-4 minutes. Kennedy also stressed the importance of understanding that a stroke can occur at any age. While stroke is often thought of as an older person’s health issue, research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), confirms that the rate of strokes among children and young adults is sharply rising. In fact, the stroke hospitalization rate from 1995 to 2008 was 30% to 37% higher among those aged 15-44, accord-ing to the study. Signs and symptoms of stroke Include: • sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body• sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding• sudden difficulty seeing in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, sudden severe headache with no known causeFollow this F.A.S.T. acronym if someone is exhibiting any of the above symptoms:FACE – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?ARMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?S– Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?TIME – If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
