BELLE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT #119The first Belle Valley School was a one room brick schoolhouse off of what is now Green Mount Lane. Back in the 1850s, students learned their “three Rs – reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic” warmed by a fireplace with planks for desks, quill pens, and no blackboard. The school teacher boarded with local families and received their pay in cash or produce. The second Belle Valley School expanded on land donated to the school by Mr. Conrad Fruth on Mascoutah Road. In 1896, disaster struck when a tornado tore the roofs off both buildings resulting in the original school building being abandoned and the students being sent to the Mascoutah Road school building. The second Belle Valley School served well until about 1950.
To accommodate District growth, the third Belle Valley School was completed in 1951 at 1901 on Mascoutah Road with four more building additions over the years. The Belle Valley North school facility was constructed at 100 Andora Drive in 1967 to house the kindergarten through fourth graders. In an effort to unify the District, the School Board named the school on Mascoutah Road “Belle Valley South” and the school on Andora Drive “Belle Valley North.”
In 2006, the District purchased a tract of land on Amann Drive to replace Belle Valley South. Belle Valley North suffered serious mine subsidence in 2007 and forced the District to alter its plans to construct a school designed to hold all K-8 students. Over the 2012 Christmas holidays, the District consolidated Belle Valley North and Belle Valley South under one roof at 2465 Amann Drive.
Approximately 1000 students now reside under a new 200,000 square foot building. An educational facility that includes two fully equipped playgrounds; walking trails; two large gyms; weight and fitness room; full-service media center; multiple computer labs; life-skills room; all-weather outdoor track; geodome greenhouse; and deep-space observatory.
In an effort to enhance Belle Valley’s educational foundation, the BV School Board directed the Administrative Team to create a student-centered learning environment where all children grow both academically and socially; becoming not only a Citizen of Character, but also a community leader. This resulted in the creation of student electives at the Jr. High level; Helping Hands at the elementary level; advanced training through the Illinois Math and Science Academy out of Chicago; incorporation of a Character Education program called BV PRIDE; Stand for the Silent; the BV Knights, a program designed to teach students leadership skills and a Response to Intervention Team throughout all grade levels.
Firmly embedded in every student’s mind is Belle Valley’s Vision statement. Don’t Just Dream It… Build It! We believe every dream is possible with hard work and dedication to goal achievement and that every student at Belle Valley is provided with the environment and support necessary to make their dream come true.
We invite you to visit our website to learn more about Belle Valley: http://www.bv119.org/

SWIC NAMES HARRINGTON MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHSouthwestern Illinois College has named Jay Harrington as the men’s head basketball coach for the Blue Storm. Harrington will be returning to his former coaching role on a part-time basis. Harrington worked at the college for more than 30 years, serving as the athletic director and men’s head basketball coach. He retired from that full-time position June 30.
“I am very excited to be returning to SWIC where I was fortunate enough to enjoy a long, great career,” said Harrington. “I wasn’t quite ready to give up coaching completely, so when the opportunity arose to return to SWIC as a part-time coach, I couldn’t pass up the chance.”
Harrington served as the head coach of the Blue Storm men’s basketball team from 1979-2014, and his SWIC record stands at 714-419. He has led several teams to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament, coached 13 All-Americans since 2000 and was elected into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2002.
“We are pleased to welcome Jay back to the college,” said Athletic Director Mike Juenger. “He certainly has a strong track record here at SWIC and we look forward to him leading the men’s basketball team to another winning season.”
SCOTT CREDIT UNION BECOMES EXCLUSIVE SPONSOR OF BATTLING BULLDOGS THANKSGIVING BAS-KETBALL TOURNAMENTScott Credit Union has signed on to be the exclusive sponsor of the annual Battling Bulldogs Thanksgiving boys basketball tourna-ment. Representatives from SCU presented a check recently for $3,000 to Highland High School Athletic Director Steve Lanxon and HHS Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Matt Elledge. Scott Credit Union will be the exclusive sponsor of the tournament for the next four years. The event will alternate each year be-tween Highland High School and Waterloo High School.
“We’re excited about being the exclusive sponsor of this tournament,” said Scott Credit Union Community Relations Representative Carol Wylie. “It will be a great event and since we have locations in both Highland and Waterloo, the sponsorship was a good fit for us. We believe in supporting schools and the community and this gives us another chance to do that.” In addition to the Highland and Waterloo boys varsity teams, the Thanksgiving tournament will feature teams from Carbondale, Althoff, Mater Dei and Edwardsville.
“The tournament will feature some really good teams,” Wylie added. “We are pleased to have Scott Credit Union support another premier basketball tournament at local high schools in our area.”

Chamber Member UpdateCARITAS FAMILY SOLUTIONS INVESTS IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PURCHASE OF 64,000 SQ. FT. FACILITYGary Huelsmann, MSW, CEO at Caritas Family Solutions (Caritas), announced the purchase of the 64,000 square foot building at 900 Royal Heights Road in Belleville. The property formerly housed a nursing home. Huelsmann said, “Currently, at the Royal Heights Building, Caritas houses the St. John Bosco Children’s Center serving children ages 6 through 12 who have been neglected or severely abused. By purchasing the building, it will enable us to serve many more clients in a variety of ways, including upgrading and making the facility more child friendly; expanding the number of cottages to house children; and providing more therapy rooms. It also allows us to consolidate our regional operations under one roof that will offer foster care and adoption services along with the children’s center in order to become more efficient and cost effective.” The building not only will serve the immediate needs of Caritas, it will become a social services collaborative building where other nonprofit organizations will be located. Huelsmann stated, “We currently are in talks with several nonprofit organizations that are looking to lease space in the building.” In addition, a nonprofit incubator will be established where smaller nonprofits can share space and services. “We continue to meet the needs of those most vulnerable in the community by creating a loving, stable environment for those in need, and this project allows Caritas to build more infrastructure to better serve the Metro-East region. It also brings economic development to that section of town by repurposing an existing structure,” expressed Huelsmann. SWIC RANKS NINTH AMONG BEST FOR VETS COLLEGES IN NATIONSouthwestern Illinois College has been ranked ninth in the nation by Military Times magazine in their annual Best for Vets: Colleges 2015 2-year schools poll. The college, one of only 140 2-year, 4-year, online and nontraditional schools nationwide to be included, jumped up four spots in its category from last year’s ranking of 13th. Among many outstanding attributes, SWIC was recognized for its:• New Veterans & Career Services center – Located on the Belleville Campus, this new student center allows the college to better serve students by featuring one-on-one personalized assistance to process benefit requests and identify additional support needs, a student lounge and career services that help veterans transition from the military to the civilian job market; • VetSuccess on Campus counselor – SWIC is one of just 94 schools nationwide to host a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs counselor on campus full time;
• Veteran New Student Orientation program – This initiative assists veterans in their transition to the student community by providing an overview of college programs, services and activities, introducing them to all the college staff that assist with veteran services, integrating them with the general student veteran population through workshop sessions, and fostering camaraderie and relationship-building through small group dynamics;
• Annual Veteran Job Fair – The event attracts more than 100 employers and assists student veterans and veteran alumni in securing employment and advancement opportunities. SWIC serves more than 1800 veterans and an additional 900 dependents – the largest population of any Illinois public college or university. For more information about veterans services offered at Southwestern Illinois College, call 618-235-2700, ext. 5226, or visit swic.edu/veterans.

HSHS ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL HEART AND VASCULAR SERVICES STAFFRECEIVE ENHANCED TRAINING IN INTERNAL ANATOMY OF THE HEART As a teaching hospital, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital continually seeks to enhance the quality care provided to its patients by pro-viding advanced educational training to its colleagues and to area students. Recently, St. Elizabeth’s Heart and Vascular Services staff were able to receive hands-on training on the internal structures of the heart, thanks to Prairie Cardiovascular electrophysiolo-gist Paban Saha, MD, and a donation of pig hearts.
For the recent training session, St. Elizabeth’s worked with St. Jude’s Medical to obtain over a dozen pig hearts, which have a very similar anatomy to the human heart. Dr. Saha, who started at Prairie Heart Institute at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in July, volunteered his time to organize and lead the training for cardiac catheterization lab staff, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
St. Elizabeth’s has been named as a Top 50 Cardiac Hospital in the country for the past three years by Truven Health Analytics. For more information about Prairie Heart Institute at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital or St. Elizabeth’s Teaching Hospital programs, visit www.steliz.org.
