We want to put the government on noticed that we are not satisfied with their regulations dealing with water. There are 107 First Nation communities operating under “Drinking Water Advisories (boil water).” We don’t ever want to be in a position where we have to boil our water. We draw our water from Lake Superior, which are the headwaters of all the great lakes. Wesdome Mine is planning an expansion of its tailing ponds. These ponds produce toxic waste water which poses a threat to our drinking water. This wastewater finds its way to Lake Superior. Our objective is to remedy the wastewater at the source. There is technology available that will take the effluent and toxic metals and chemical from the waste water. The Federal and Provincial government has been doing a poor job of managing water. Wesdome is supposed to be self-compliant. They did not report to either government their last spill (so much for monitoring and self-compliance). We hope to develop legislation and regulations that protect the water at the source. Ultimately we want to ensure that our people have safe, clean drinking water as the rest of Canadians. It is a basic human right. Also, we never gave up our right to the waters. It is our resource. We will be looking for a royalty from users in the future. Again, this is one of the many “irons in the fire” that is ongoing with your First Nation. We do our best to keep you informed, and as always, if you have any questions, you can reach me at the office 705-856-1993, Ext 215 toll-free 1-888-303-7723 or by email [email protected]. Aaniin Brothers and Sisters, In the coming weeks, we will be meeting with the Mining Industry, the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on water issues. We want to put the government on noticed that we are not satisfied with their regulations dealing with water. There are 107 First Nation communities operating under “Drinking Water Advisories (boil water).” We don’t ever want to be in a position where we have to boil our water. MICHIPICOTEN FIRST NATION

Over the past year, the boys I work with really wanted to learn to Drum so through a lot of hard work and dedication I was able to get them a drum and start a Boy’s Learning Drum Group. These boys want to learn a piece of or tradition along with the responsibility that comes with it. This past January we feasted and birthed

their drum with their families. I am so proud of these young men for stepping up and taking a leap to do something they want to do regardless of the stigma they may get from peers. I am so proud of all of you !!!

Can’t wait to hear they first song they will sing !!!!

Nancy Andre / CHPW

MICHIPICOTEN ARTEFACT PROJECT – UPDATE January 31, 2017

Project Coordinator: Wendy Peterson, MFN Librarian Project Consultant: Johanna Rowe, CAHP SUCCESSES

Connected with supporting agencies: Megan Brooks, Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Sport – provided guidance and documentation associated with the ar-chaeological sites from which the artefacts originate; Scott Hamilton, Archaeology Department at Lakehead University – offered assistance in helping to potentially negotiate government funds to catalogue, store and display artefacts; provided guidance on handling procedures; Alicia Hawkins, Archaeology Department at Laurentian University – offered assistance for cataloguing artefacts as well as provided documentation on policy and procedure for inventory guidelines and documentation; and Eric Hollinger, Tribal Liaison & Repatriation Program, Smithsonian Institute – assisted with searching collections data-base for anything relating to Michipicoten, Wawa, east shore of Lake Superior (nothing identified to date).

Community interest and involvement:

Two community presentations were organized in October and November 2016 with great success. MFN members and citizens of Wawa were extremely interested in the project. A number of volunteers came forward offering their assistance with cataloguing as well as participating on a working group to confirm storage and future display of the items at MFN and the larger community of Wawa. Meeting included the Town of Wawa Heritage Committee who are willing to work with MFN on protecting, preserving and promoting the artefacts and their story. It recognized that this collection could be the foundation for a proper

cultural centre/museum in the region. This project is an opportunity to promote cultural tourism and the larger story of the rich and diverse natural and cul-tural history in the Wawa – Michipicoten area.

Documentation and Photo Images:

A catalogue sheet for paper documentation of the artefacts has been created. Wendy and Johanna have photographed the outside of every box and started a digital file for images of each box, each package, and the contents found within. Two boxes have been opened and inventories on these boxes are nearly complete.

Future storage and display:

A variety of potential storage units have been identified including: Replicating wood storage units currently used at the Canadian Museum of History Professional suppliers of storage units used at museums

Current display locations have been identified: Cabinets at the Elders Complex Tourist Information Centre in Wawa Visitor Centre, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Agawa Bay Future cultural centre/museum ?

Networking and Workshop Participation: Indigenous Collections Workshop – Brantford, ON (March 23-24, 2017)

Wendy and I were chosen to speak on the Michipicoten Artefact Story at this annual workshop sponsored by the Ontario Museum Association, Woodland Cultural Centre, Six Nations Polytechnique

Canadian Conservation Institute Workshop – Care of Artifacts in Aboriginal Cultural Centres On behalf of MFN we submitted an application to host a workshop on handling artefacts. There is no fee charged to us to host the workshop, however we are in charge of organizing the event, pro-moting it and providing a venue and meals (participant fee will be charged). This event will be offered to MFN as well as surrounding communities who have small museums or cultural centres (Wawa, Chapleau, White River, SSMarie). Suggested dates to host this workshop are May 17-18, 2017 or October 18-19, 2017 (flexible). We do not find out if we are successful until March 2017.

IN PROGRESS: Opening each box. Creating a photo file link to share images and videos with Lakehead, Laurentian in order to assist in identification. Creating a website or social media site to update the community on the project, highlight interesting items, share mystery items for community/volunteers to help identify. Scan and catalogue research documents and paperwork for MFN library to ensure it is preserved and items made avail-able for research purposes. Johanna Rowe to prepare a final report on the MFN “story” represented in these boxes.

TARGETS: Have the majority of items photographed, documented, scanned and catalogued by the end of 2017. Have a small display for the Elders Complex ready for the August Youth and Elders Gathering 2017. Create a display at the Tourist Information Centre in Wawa for July 1, 2017. Ongoing updates are provided with each 20 hour invoice. Project status will be provided to MFN to ensure our shared vision of protection, preservation and promotion of this unique collection is realized.
