First Week of School InformationThe first day of classes is Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The day starts with an assembly at 12:30 pm, held in the gymnasium for all students in all grades. This will be followed by an Advisor meeting and a ‘mini’ schedule of classes for the students. School will dismiss at 2:55 pm and school buses will run at the usual times.

• Students will receive their timetable, locker assignment, protocols & procedures booklet from their advisor on the first day of school.

• Students will be called down to have their photo taken by Lifetouch for the school ID card and yearbook. You may purchase school photos directly from Lifetouch. Students will be provided with proofs in September to view before making a purchasing decision.

• Lifetouch Photo Schedule

• Students must have their student ID cards in order to receive textbooks. Students are responsible for all books signed out on their card. Do NOT exchange books or sign books out for other students.

• Students who do not have their photo taken with their grade will be required to obtain their ID card on their own time. They will also need to have their school photo taken on retake day on October 23, 2017.

Fashion StudiesDo you have fabric, notions, yarn, beads and other craft project materials that you no longer use

or want?

Students always make good use of donated materials. A lot of those old fabrics from the 70’s and 80’s

are back in style and the students are having fun sewing up new projects.

Also, there are many students for a variety of reasons that cannot purchase fabric or other craft supplies, so donated items are really appreciated.

You can drop off your donation in the office after August 29th or arrange to have it picked up. For more information contact Karen Philpott at [email protected] or 403-320-7565 after August 29th. Thank youfor your support!

Busing Transportation

Update ...

West side students who are eligible for transportation (living 2.4 km and beyond Chinook High School) will be placed on a bus route in August. Bus routes and times for the 2017-2018 school year will be available on the Lethbridge School District website www.lethsd.ab.ca by the end of August 2017. If you do not have access to a computer or if you have any questions please call the Transportation Coordinator at (403) 380-5303.

We do not anticipate major route changes for the coming year, however, times may be revised slightly. If you are planning to move over the summer or have moved please call (403) 380-5303 with your new address.

CalculatorsIf your child is registered in a Math 10C, 20-1, 20-2, 30-1 or 30-2 course please watch the flyers this summer for sales on graphing calculators, as these courses require your child has one. Kijijisometimes has used ones for a reasonable price as well. We recommend that you get a Texas instrument Calculator and would suggest not spending the extra money on a TI-nspire. The easiest calculators for students to get familiar with are the Ti-84’s and Ti-83’s. Below is a list of approved calculators for the diploma.

The World’s Required Reading List: The Books That

Students Read in 28 Countrieswww.blog.ed.ted.com/2016/12/08/the-worlds-required-reading-list-the-books-that-students-read-in-28-countries/

AlbaniaKronikë në gur (1971) by Ismail KadareWhat it’s about: Known in English as Chronicle in Stone, this novel is told through the eyes of a child and shows how different conquering forces — Italian fascist, Greek and Nazi — ravage a small Albanian city during World War II.Why it’s taught: Kadare is one of the most critically acclaimed Albanian writers, and was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. This book “helps you understand vividly what World War II meant for the people who lived through those events,” says VaitsonÇumaku. “Because it’s from the perspective of a child, it also shows you that there can be optimism during hard times.”

BrazilMorte e vida Severina (1955) by João Cabral de Melo NetoWhat it’s about: Known in English as The Death of a Severino, this play in verse is about the arduous journey of a man who is fleeing the drought- and poverty-stricken northeastern region of Brazil in search of a better situation and the city. Why it’s taught: “It shows the dual conditions that the country has always presented and still presents — poor lives, inequality, ignorance, and silent people, versus a city population, with all its advantages — and the distance between these two groups,” says Andrea Rodrigues.

FinlandSeitsemän veljestä (1870) by Aleksis KiviWhat it’s about: Known in English as Seven Brothers, this book is about a quarrelsome family of seven brothers and their struggles in rural Finland. They eventually grow and mature into decent members of society. Why it’s taught: It is believed to be the first truly Finnish novel by a Finnish author in the Finnish language about ordinary people. “It’s considered the national novel of Finland,” says Jaani Länsiö. “It’s about Finnish stubbornness.”

IndonesiaLaskar Pelangi (2005) by Andrea HirataWhat it’s about: Known in English as Rainbow Troops, this novel is based on a true story about ten students from a remote village in Indonesia who, with the help of a pair of inspiring teachers, learn to stand up for themselves and their community. Why it’s taught: It teaches “sacrifice, dedication, hard work, passion, brotherhood, friendship, optimism and perseverance in the face of challenges,” says Mahrukh Bashir.

Ghana; NigeriaThings Fall Apart (1958) by Chinua AchebeWhat it’s about: Set in Nigeria in the 1900s, this novel follows Okonkwo, an Igbo leader and village wrestling champion, his journey to power and glory, and his eventual fall when he fights back against white colonialists. Why it’s taught: “On the surface, it’s a celebration of African traditionalism and how those ideals were washed away with the coming of the missionaries,” says Ama Y Adi-Dako. “At the heart of it, though, it is a critical look at the concept and drawbacks of African and tribal masculinity.”

PhilippinesNoli Me Tangere (1887) by Jose RizalWhat it’s about: Rizal went on to be a hero of the Philippine revolution, and his novel — the English-language title is Touch Me Not — shows life in the Philippines society under cruel, repressive, arbitrary Spanish Catholic rule. Why it’s taught: By combining a dramatic story with an activist message, this novel has been compared to Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It is taught to help students “appreciate the efforts of our forefathers in shaping our independence,” says John Eric Uy.

Firstly, don’t worry and/or fret! Contrary to what some believe, an audition isn’t necessarily a stressful thing. You are simply showing us that you are interested in lending your talents to the company for this show! The fact that you are willing to commit your time and talent to the team is truly the most important thing! We encourage to you come, enjoy the time spent at audition learning dance steps or singing together and to simply be yourself!

Secondly, ask yourself why you are auditioning. Are these some of the answers to come to mind? 1) I really like this show. 2) I enjoy being part of a creative team –regardless of what part I get cast to play. 3) I think the show has the potential to be another opportunity to grow and discover – a great experience. In our view, becoming part of the cast/company means becoming a part of the diverse Fine Arts Team at Chinook. That experience is team-oriented, safe and an enjoyable place to connect, learn and create with others.

But I have other commitments! Yes. We all do! It is our belief that the student experience at Chinook should be multifaceted in order to help create well rounded young adults who have been given the opportunity to excel and gain experience in all areas (academic, artistic, athletic) of their learning. Part of committing to this show simply means being a highly organized student. We will do our best to create a rehearsal schedule that works – it will be your job to be organized and conscientious about managing your responsibilities. This, in itself, is an excellent life skill to develop.

So what do I prepare for this audition? It would likely be smart to become familiar with the show and the music

from the show. If you have an aspiration for a specific role or roles it would be prudent to have listened to and sung (the internet and karaoke tracks exist as a tool) the pieces that interest you. Truthfully though, it is our advice that you simply come as you are! Relax and enjoy sharing where you are right now! This is, generally, a show that features some solos but also a fair bit of ensemble singing/performing. We would encourage you to not get TOO focused on winning any particular role. Our hope is that all members of the company can embrace whatever role they are asked to play on the team!

What will we do at the first audition (Wednesday -Grade 11/12 women - morning; Grade 9/10 women -afternoon; Grade 9-12 men - evening)? In terms of movement or dance, there are some truly fun production numbers in the production. At the audition, we just want to see not only how you move but also how you can be coached to move? You need to have fun with it! In terms of singing (at the opening audition), we will sing together at first (songs from the show) and then ask those who wish to – to sing on their own. In terms of acting, there may be some script excerpts that Sharon would love to see/hear different combinations of actors work?

Callbacks – Thursday (afternoon – women; evening –women & men) Following the first audition on Wednesday, some actors will be contacted if the directors wish to “Call them Back” on Thursday afternoon and/or evening. In advance, attempt to ensure that you may be available at the callback times should you happen to be called back. The purpose of the “Callback” is to see different combinations of performers together and allow actors to really have an opportunity to showcase what they can do from a vocal, acting, dance perspective.

I READI read because one life isn't enough, and in the pages of a book I can be anybody;I read because the words that build the story become mine, to build my life;I read not for happy endings but for new beginnings; I'm just beginning myself, and I wouldn't mind a map;I read because I have friends who don't, and young though they are, they're beginning to run out of material;I read because every journey begins at the library, and it's time for me to start packing;I read because one of these days I'm going to get out of this town, and I'm going to go everywhere and meet everybody, and I want to be ready.

- Richard Peck
