35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.

36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the

harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. 9 Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.”

Hymn (Tune: 39 Angel Voices)

Lord, you call us to your service, each in our own way. Some to caring, loving, healing;some to preach or pray;some to work with quiet learning, truth discerning, day by day.

Life for us is always changingin the work we share.Christian love adds new dimensions

to the way we care. For we know that you could lead us,as you need us,anywhere.

Seeing life from your perspectivemakes your challenge plain,as your heart is grieving overthose who live in pain.Teach us how, by your compassion, you may fashionhope again.

Lord, we set our human limitson the work we do.Send us your directing Spirit, pour your power through, that we may be free in livingand in givingall for you.

Word

Prayer by Shirley Erena Murray

God weeps at love withheld, at strength misused, at children's innocence abused, and till we change the way we love, God weeps.God bleeds at anger's fist, at trust betrayed, at women battered and afraid, and till we change the way we win, God bleeds.God cries at hungry mouths, at running sores, at creatures dying without cause, and till we change the way we care, God cries.God waits for stones to melt, for peace to seed, for hearts to hold each other's need, and till we understand the Christ, God waits

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn (Tune: 574 Paderborn)

The kingdom of God is justice and joy; for Jesus restores what sin would destroy. God's power and glory in Jesus we know and here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.

The kingdom of God is mercy and grace; the captives are freed, the sinners find place, the outcast are welcomed God's banquet to share; and hope is awakened in place of despair.

The kingdom of God is challenge and choice: believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross: our crisis of judgement for gain or for loss.

God's kingdom is come, the gift and the goal; in Jesus begun, in heaven made whole. The heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call and all things cry 'Glory!' to God all in all. Bryn Rees
