LETTER FROM PASTOR DIANNE

I attended my first Annual Conference in June of 1999, with my then husband Corbin and our six month old child Louis. We were meeting in a large conference room in DeKalb, Illinois, at a university in the middle of a cornfield. The main thing I remember about that conference? Sitting at long tables with about 1000 other United Methodists….laying Louis on the floor for a minute while the Bishop spoke….watching helplessly as a small bottle of hand sanitizer fell on Louis’ head and Louis began screaming….and hearing the Bishop tell the conference, “I’ve felt like that a lot lately too!” Last week, then, marked my 20th annual conference, including three in Northern Illinois and 17 here in East Ohio. I have to say, this one was among the most difficult, including the one where Louis screamed! We came to this Annual Conference acutely aware that as the United Methodist Church, we are fractured and divided. More than once, a person came to a microphone to debate an issue and said he would favor a split of the UMC. Voting on petitions and resolutions (both of which require a 2/3 majority) was often so close that we did a “standing count” – literally going down each aisle and counting those standing for “yes” and those standing for “no”. Petitions are documents that can be sent to the 2020 General Conference for review, and these were voted on whether they would be endorsed by the conference. Resolutions are essentially referenda that affect only our annual conference. If you’d like a summary of what passed and failed, you can see the eocumc.com website, or ask me or one of our FOUR amazing delegates to Annual Conference – Jill Pongallo, Ruby Cunningham, Barb Emery and Dee Dee Rencehausen. Some of the most important work we did this past week, however, was electing delegates to the 2020 General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference. All of that voting is done by majority, and we ended up having to take 18 votes to get all of the delegates and alternates elected - a process made more difficult due to the failure of the scantron machine on the first morning! As a member of the secretarial staff, I was “on duty” from the end of the first worship service through the end of business for the day. I sat up front with the bishop and the rest of the staff, monitoring microphones and timing speeches so they did not go over the agreed upon limit. I helped the journal and daily proceedings editors get names and numbers right and calculated what the number was for that 2/3 majority (gotta use those MIT degrees sometimes!).

The last day, conference was in session from 9:15 am through 7:15 pm with a break for lunch. Every evening, I gathered with the group from East Ohio Forward, a centrist/progressive caucus, to strategize and plan. You can imagine, I came home exhausted. But there were holy moments as well. Time praying morning prayer and compline (bedtime prayer) with my Order of St Luke brothers and sisters. The ordination service where about 200 clergy processed to show support for those about to be commissioned and ordained. The Open Table service, sponsored by the Reconciling Ministries Network, where I led the communion liturgy along with newly elected delegate to General Conference, the Reverend Matt Laferty. Early morning runs along the lake. And of course, ice cream with good friends. I am very grateful for the representation from Christ UMC at this Annual Conference, and most delighted that appointments were fixed for the 2019-2020 year, and I have been reappointed to serve as your pastor! So, Fear Not! Dianne

THANK YOU to those who contributed either school supplies or money for the

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) Mission project. Also, thanks to the RFM class for helping us assemble the kits. We delivered 38 School Kits plus a check to the Mission trucks at Annual Conference. Overall, the Midwest Mission Distribution truck and Eastbrook Mission Barn truck left Lakeside carrying more than $12,000 in cash donations as well as:

• 850 cleaning buckets, • 750 hygiene kits, • 540 school kits, • 1,325 personal dignity kits, • 185 baby palettes, • 300 homemade hospital gowns, and • medical supplies.

Dee Dee Rencehausen, Annual Conference Delegate

MISSION in ACTION

CAMBODIAN LUNCHEON: August 4th, after Worship

Come hear about Pastor Dianne’s mission trip to Cambodia.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

UMW Sunday was June 16. I thank special participants: Sharon Zothner (liturgist), Janis and Jill Pongallo (“Mary Did You Know” duet and prayer beads for graduates), Sandy Foster (Children’s Happening), ushers: Carol Thomas (chr), Monta Demchak, Sandy Foster and Joy Slipp, Pastor Dianne (prayers, awards). My talk included:

• UMW began 150 years ago in Boston.

• Women pledged two cents a day and prayed for mission.

• The original name was Women’s Foreign Missionary Society.

• First missionaries were sent to India, bold or brave Isabella Thoburn (Ohio teacher) and Dr. Clara Swaim.

• With the merger of the Methodist and Evanglical United Brethren churches, there were 800,000 UMW members world-wide.

• 6000 attended the quadrennial UMW assembly in Columbus in May, including Jill Pongallo and myself.

UMW has almost 100 mission institutions in the USA.

• Westside Community House (formerly a house for deaconesses at West 30th Street and Bridge Avenue) is at West 93rd Street and Lorain Avenue.

• Deaconesses served in seven Methodist churches in Greater Cleveland.

• If the deaconess from Christ Church had not called on and invited my future husband’s family, I would not be here today.

• We are fortunate to have a UMW organization.

• We need more younger people in the UMW and Christ Church. Our past theme was Faith, Hope and Love-in-Action. The present theme is Remember the Past, Embrace the Present, and Transform the Future.

- Ruby Cunningham, president
