April 2016 Christ United Methodist Church | christumcmobile.com | 251.342.0462 It is an honor of a lifetime to be asked to return to Christ United Methodist Church to help continue the incredible ministry that Jeff and Norma Spiller, and those faithful missioner families started 37 years ago. When Crystal and I moved from West Mobile eleven years ago we never dreamed this would happen. Needless to say, we were blown away when we received the call that I would be the next Senior Pastor of Christ UMC. We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful messages we’ve received via social media, text, and e-mail over the last week. We are excited to rekindle the many friendships we forged during our time at Christ UMC from 2000 – 2005, and look forward to making many new friends as we get to know you in the coming months. So much has happened in our lives over the past 11 years. When we left Mobile in 2005 we had one child, David (now age 12), two dogs, and a cat. Since then we’ve added Ethan (age 9) and Ella (age 6). We still have the same two dogs and cat, and now we’ve added a fish, too! When we left Mobile we moved to Wilmore, Kentucky so that I could attend Asbury Seminary’s Beeson Pastor Doctor of Ministry Program. After our year in school, we were appointed back to Mobile County to serve Saraland United Methodist Church. We had a tremendous ministry there for five years, and then in 2011 we were appointed to serve First United Methodist Church in Prattville, AL. For the past five years we’ve worked hard to help FUMC Prattville grow not only in numbers, but in their spiritual depth and mission outreach. We are in the process of choosing schools, finding a place to live, and preparing to settle our family back in Mobile. We are so thankful for your prayers for us, and we appreciate you remembering our church family in Prattville as they go through this transition, as well. Please know that we will be praying for you, Jeff, Norma, and the whole staff as we prepare to arrive in July. In Christ, Rob Couch

It is an honor

of a lifetime to be asked

to return to Christ United Methodist Church to

help continue the incredible ministry that Jeff and Norma Spiller, and

those faithful missioner families started 37 years ago. When Crystal and I moved from West

Mobile eleven years ago we never dreamed this would happen. Needless to say, we were blown

away when we received the call that I would be the next Senior Pastor of Christ UMC. We have

been overwhelmed by the wonderful messages we’ve received via social media, text, and e-mail

over the last week. We are excited to rekindle the many friendships we forged during our time at

Christ UMC from 2000 – 2005, and look forward to making many new friends as we get to know you

in the coming months.

So much has happened in our lives over the past 11 years. When we left Mobile in 2005 we had

one child, David (now age 12), two dogs, and a cat. Since then we’ve added Ethan (age 9) and Ella

(age 6). We still have the same two dogs and cat, and now we’ve added a fish, too! When we left

Mobile we moved to Wilmore, Kentucky so that I could attend Asbury Seminary’s Beeson Pastor

Doctor of Ministry Program. After our year in school, we were appointed back to Mobile County to

serve Saraland United Methodist Church. We had a tremendous ministry there for five years, and

then in 2011 we were appointed to serve First United Methodist Church in Prattville, AL. For the past

five years we’ve worked hard to help FUMC Prattville grow not only in numbers, but in their spiritual

depth and mission outreach.

We are in the process of choosing schools, finding a place to live, and preparing to settle our family

back in Mobile. We are so thankful for your prayers for us, and we appreciate you remembering

our church family in Prattville as they go through this transition, as well. Please know that we will be

praying for you, Jeff, Norma, and the whole staff as we prepare to arrive in July.

EXCITING TIMES...I’m certainly very excited to now know that Rob Couch will be appointed as our new Senior Pastor on July 1! Rob is an outstanding leader and can capably lead Christ UMC into the great future God has for us. Because Rob was a part of our staff years ago, he knows the basic DNA of Christ UMC and he knows many of our lay leadership.

Rob and Crystal have three children, David, Ethan and Ella. Rob, Crystal, and the children have served at Prattville First UMC in Prattville, Alabama for the last five years. I encourage you to continue to pray for the Couch family, our staff, and our congregation as we move forward.

I encourage you to do some things that will help in this time of transition:

n Pray that God will make each of us receptive and supportive of the significant change that is occurring.

n Make sure you renew your commitment to be faithful and regular in worship each Sunday.

n Continue to be faithful in your regular financial support of Christ UMC and its ministries.

n Give Rob and Crystal a little breathing room when they arrive. Love them and support them. Let’s not bombard them with ideas, suggestions, and expectations.

If you can’t say something good and positive…well, you know what your mother taught you.

In Christ, Jeff

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 1 Timothy 2:1

By Tyler Vittetoe, High School Minister Greetings in Jesus’ name! 2016 has been a great year so far for our youth ministry. Winter Retreat and Confirmation have been great highlights of how many students have been impacted by our church and our ministry programs. We had almost 200 students at Winter Retreat, and all were inspired to discover their inner potential and allow the Lord to help them grow and flourish in their faith. We had 35 students complete their confirmation journey this month, and they were each confirmed into membership at Christ UMC surrounded by supporting loved ones and friends. What an incredible testimony to God’s faithfulness through our congregation!

We are always reminded that it is because of your generosity that these students were able to discover their faith in Jesus. They have now become a part of a dynamic congregation that cares deeply for reaching the next generation of believers. Thank you for caring about the legacy that each of us leave to the generations behind us. As we look forward to a busy summer season with great retreats and mission trips, we pray that you will be reminded that God is at work in all of the ministries here at Christ UMC.

By Ashley Walker, Director of Children’s MinistrySpring is my favorite time of the year. Everything in nature becomes renewed. As you glance around and take in all of the miracles God has created for us to see, fields become full of green grass while trees and flowers begin blooming with endless color. Birds begin singing and dancing in the trees, while squirrels are playing fun games of chase, and hide and seek. In this season baby animals are being born while fuzzy caterpillars are transforming into beautiful butterflies.

Spring is a time that brings a new sense of joy and happiness. We have longer days with beautiful weather. It is a great time to spend outdoors relaxing or spending time with your family. Times can be stressful and full of never-ending to-do lists. I encourage you this season to stop and take some time and enjoy the outdoors. Look around and see all of the beautiful things in nature that God has given us. Go on a that long walk, take the children on a picnic at the park, or plant a small garden with your children so that they can watch it grow!

Use this season of new beginnings to grow closer to your family and friends, and build a stronger relationship with God and all of his glorious creations!

I’m staying on your trail; I’m putting one foot in front of the other. I’m not giving up.

—Psalm 17:5 MSG

Dr. Mark Hyman says that what you put on your fork dictates whether you are sick or well, slim or fat, depleted or energized. With all that riding on what you eat, it would be easy to feel overwhelmed. But there’s no pressure to change instantly; gradual change over time is sustainable. Just put one foot in front of the other. There’s plenty of grace while you are in the process. When you have a bad day, what matters is that you decide to get back on track and that you don’t give up. What do you tend to do when you have a bad day, when you feel lousy or you eat the wrong foods because you’re busy or stressed? Be gracious with yourself, because God is gracious with you. Over time you will have more good days than bad ones, and the changes will be long-lasting for your health.

Food for Thought: God is gentle with you while you are in the change process. Our goal is progress not perfection.

FORWARD AND IRA DISTRIBUTIONSRob Blackwell, Church AdministratorSeveral church members have asked this year about making contributions from their IRAs, and have asked me to disseminate that information. Emphasizing that I am not a financial advisor, I’ll try to summarize. As you probably know, IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70 1/2 and older take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their IRAs each year, whether they need the income or not. These distributions are added to the individual’s gross income and are taxable. The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) provision, which was made permanent in December 2015, allows up to $100,000 per year of these distributions to be excluded from income if they are made directly to a qualified charity, like Christ UMC. Instead of providing the usual Schedule A tax deduction for a charitable contribution, a QCD reduces the donor’s adjusted gross income. This avoids some of the negative consequences of RMDs and provides additional benefits, which may include:

n Providing the tax benefit of a contribution without having to itemize

n Helping to avoid a higher tax bracket

n Keeping income below the threshold for the Medicare high-income surcharge

n Reducing the taxation of Social Security benefits

n Avoiding the income-related limits on itemized contributions

n Providing favorable treatment to nondeductible IRA contributions This mechanism may not be beneficial for everyone subject to RMDs. To find out about the benefits, requirements and procedures of making a QCD, please consult your financial advisor.

ARE YOU NEW TO CHRIST UMC?

CART DRIVERS NEEDED

For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. - Isaiah 56:7b (ESV)

This year will be a year of transition for the Christ United Methodist Church family. Just as Pastor Jeff and 13 missioner families studied and prayed for God’s will when they planted Christ UMC more than 35 years ago, we want to pray diligently for the changes and new opportunities Christ UMC will have.

Each month our prayers will have an emphasis. We encourage you to be involved in at least one of the following ways, in addition to your daily personal prayer time—with your prayer partner, with your small group, and with the Corporate Prayer Gathering once per month. Please make plans to join us on the following date:

Sunday, April 245:00 p.m. | Christ Center

During Jeff’s Retirement Celebration on April 24 we will keep this month’s Prayer Focus: Rejoicing – 1 Thessalonians 5:18, in mind. Heavenly Fa-ther, we celebrate our past and anticipate this new chapter in our church.

Prayer is a powerful gift from God. Join us as we continue to move forward for the kingdom.

SHARE YOUR TALENT IN THE SANCTUARY CHOIRAs we start new music after Easter, now is the best time to begin sharing your musical gifts in the choir. Just come and try it out on a Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. For information, contact Ralph Gudeman at 251.510.1099

John 14:26 calls the Holy Spirit our helper - But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. The Holy Spirit has also been referred to as the breath of God or God in the wind. In one incident it has been likened unto a wave of God’s spirit passing over the earth. The Spirit beckons and pushes us

to toward Christ. He was sent to be our comforter and to be present with us here on earth. If all of these things are true, then shouldn’t we know more about the person who is meant to be those things for us? Here is a list of books available in the Lighthouse Library that will help us grow in our relationship with the Holy Spirit by learning more about Him.

n God In You: Releasing The Power Of The Holy Spirit In Your Life by David Jeremiah

n Fresh Power: Experiencing The Vast Resources Of The Spirit Of God by Jim Cymbala

n The Promise Of God’s Power by Jim Cymbala

n Spirit Rising: Tapping Into The Power Of The Holy Spirit by Jim Cymbala

n Holy Spirit: Here And Now by Trevor Hudson

n The Helper by Catherine Marshall
