What if I’m not 100% sure if I believe? There are lots of questions like these. You know the ones. They are the questions we never say because we think (for a reason totally unclear to this pastor) that we should know the answer already. How many times have you wondered, “How do I know the sound of God’s voice?” or “Is there truth in other religions?” I bet more than people think! I’m going to let you in on a secret—everyone even pastors…even me, have these sorts of fundamental questions about the faith. Having those questions doesn’t mean you are less spiritual than you should be and it doesn’t mean you are in some sort of state of spiritual babyhood that should embarrass you. In fact, having those sorts of questions indicates a level of spiritual health. It is not that a lack of knowledge indicates spiritual health; rather, spiritual health is the ability to know what you don’t know and have questions. Assuming you have all the answers you need generally means you have stalled in your spiritual growth and it’s time to give yourself a little push. What’s the solution? There are two. For those of you who have questions, ask them. In your Sunday school class, with your Christian friends, ask the question! You will not only discover that others have wondered these things as well, but will have given yourself fellow investigators to help discover the answer you need. For those of us who haven’t really given time to thinking about these sorts of root-level questions, it’s time to take a look. That’s the second solution. It may have been a long time since you spent time considering how it is that someone knows something is a sin, or whether or not church attendance is central to faith, but it’s time to step back and look for where your questions are located. It’s time to give yourself an opportunity to shore up the weak areas of your faith understanding. This sort of probing and questioning is nothing to be afraid of and definitely nothing to be embarrassed about. That is why we are going to be exploring all of those and several other questions this fall. Check out the back cover for the whole list. We’d love to see you at 5:00 p.m. Evening Worship, but if not, ask those questions anyway! 251.342.0462 | SEPTEMBER 2014 WORSHIP SERVICES What If...................................................front Notes from Pastors Jeff and Jim................2 Group Life Opportunities..........................3 Youth Ministry.............................................4 Children’s Ministry......................................5 Recreation Ministry....................................6 Various Ministries.......................................7 New Members/Music Ministry..................8 Pastoral Care.............................................9 Weekly Events/Library.............................10 Calendar.................................................. 11 Evening Worship Sermon Series............ 12 IN THIS ISSUE Christ United Methodist Church christumcmobile.com

We’ll start eating hamburgers around 4:45 p.m. We’ll also provide the drinks. In Christ,

Jim Kinder

important mattersThank you for making August a very meaningful and productive month! We had great worship experiences in NewSong and the Sanctuary. The Global Leadership Summit was a great success, as was our school supplies drive for Dixon Elementary!

As we move into September, I want to thank you for your faithfulness during these summer months. Last year, we invited all of our Christ UMC family to practice tithing (giving 10%) during the month of September. Our giving was up 16% over the previous September! I say let’s do it again this September! Will you tithe for these 30 days?

I also wanted you to know that I am one of many pastors, theologians and leaders in our denomination with concern about some of our fellow pastors (mostly in other jurisdictions) who are violating church law by conducting same sex unions. We have crafted a statement entitled “Integrity and Unity” and have addressed it to our Council of Bishops. It simply calls upon our Bishops to

enforce our Book of Discipline and to demand integrity so the unity of our church will be preserved. I encourage you to read the letter at methodistcrossroads.org and, if you feel led, add your name to the list. Our own Bishop Paul Leeland is standing strong for orthodox values within the Council of Bishops. I am grateful for his leadership.

Pray! n For our beloved United Methodist Church n For Christ UMC as we make important decisions about our corner property and as we enter our fall stewardship effort n For fellow Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their faith in Jesus n For every Christ UMC family member to get connected to a small group

In Christ,

Pastor Jeff

Begins September 7 | 9:15 a.m.n Sermon on the mount | room C-221 | The Sermon on the Mount is probably the best known part of Jesus’ teaching, though perhaps the least understood. He had come to inaugurate the new era. It is here we learn that followers of Christ pattern their lives after something totally different from what had preceded it. It is an outline of the world and how it could be if we all lived by this design. A class for singles.

n AmoS | room A-206 | Amos challenges us to examine ourselves and our society and to confront injustice wherever we find it. This Old Testament book is relevant for today and our times.

Tardy bells are ringing and alarm clocks are going off a lot earlier than before. School has started back and hopefully you are beginning to enjoy

the odd luxury that a set schedule can bring. I know in my home, I sort of look forward to this time of year. Aside from school starting back, we are also resuming our Sunday Night Fall Schedule. Last week in Middle School worship, we began a 4-week series called The Pour. On Sunday nights, we will meet in small groups to dig a little deeper into the material

presented. The Pour is a lesson series that will help students understand the difference between pouring and spilling. Pouring is done on purpose, where spilling is done haphazardly and often times results in waste. God poured His love into us on purpose. Our hope is to help the students understand our responsibility to that love and that purpose. It is to further pour love into others. Talk with your student about where they might spend time pouring into others over the next few weeks.

“I always wished someone would do something about that, then I realized I am somebody.” This particular quote by Lily Tomlin has always stuck out to me. Growing up, my mother always told us

one of the main reasons God has us here is to love and help one another. There is so much brokenness in the world. If we all just did something, it would have to make an impact. That is why I am completely loving the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that is sweeping just about all forms of media

right now. Seeing the children getting involved with their parents about any cause or charity should bring joy to our hearts as Christians. Whether it is bringing awareness to ALS, malaria, starvation, dehydration or just cutting your neighbor’s yard when they are not able to, let us have joy in our hearts. Rejoice in the fact that we are teaching our children to serve. Rejoice in the fact that we have a loving God. God wants us to love one another and help each other. I wonder if He ever thinks, “I wish they would do something about that.”

I’m amazed at how many people ignore the feedback from the most sophisticated and complex organism on the planet—the human body. God’s design of the human body is absolutely mind boggling. It’s designed with built-in protection mechanisms from head to toe, so listen to what it tells you before you train, as you train, and after you train. If you’re feeling pain, your body is telling you something, so slow down or reduce the intensity. If you’re feeling light-headed, your body is telling you something. This doesn’t mean stop. Simply slow down and see if your body responds by removing the warning signal. Over time, you’ll learn your limits. Then you’ll know just how hard to push yourself, by combining the heart rate monitoring with the body’s feedback.

The difference between discomfort and pain: Coaches are always telling their athletes they need to know the difference between pain and injury. The difference to them is that you can play with pain but an injury should be rested. The reality is that pain is the body’s feedback from an injury. For your training purposes, what you really need to know is the difference between discomfort and pain. Many times during a workout you may feel uncomfortable or tired, but that’s something you need to learn to push through. By going beyond discomfort or fatigue, you’re pushing yourself past your normal limits and forcing your body to respond. It responds by getting in better shape to handle the work you’re putting it through.

$1,003,000thru August

Seven Year plan reportBy rob Blackwell, Church Administrator

The goal of the Seven Year Plan is to eliminate $7 million of debt in 7 years, thereby giving us the resources and flexibility to more freely and effectively answer God’s call on our church. Remember, the core components are:

n Intentional Emphasis on Spiritual Development and Tithingn Incorporating the Mortgage Payment in General Operating (GO)n 2nd Mile Sundaysn Planned Givingn Capital Campaigns In October, we will enter into the next phase of the 7YP with the introduction of the first of two capital campaigns. With this campaign, we will see some differences from a traditional church capital campaign. While the commitment to paying down the debt will continue to be the focal point of the 7YP, the campaign this fall will have at its foundation an emphasis on personal discipleship and stewardship. The financial needs of the organizational church are vital and worthy of our dedicated and prayerful effort, but the heart of the matter is the spiritual need of the real church—the people. As we grow in our discipleship and become better stewards of all that God has provided, that growth will be reflected in the financial health of our church and its ministries. We are excited about the potential that this campaign has for Christ UMC, so be on the lookout in late September for more information on this important phase of the 7YP. In the meantime, check the graph and let’s celebrate the fact that we have now paid down the debt principal more than $1 million since we began the 7YP!

Are you a woman with a schedule that varies every day? Possibly being a caregiver keeps you pretty tied down or you just don’t get out that much anymore and use technology as your means of maintaining contact with the rest of the world. Maybe you have children to get to different schools, after school activities that keep you on the run or a little one around whose schedule must fit your needs. Perhaps you work outside the home and have to include that in the mix of the needs of other family members. Add to that household chores, such, as providing a healthy meal or clean clothes for the family, and there is no way to add a regularly scheduled meeting to your already overactive life.

If you’re that woman who can not add another place-to-be to her life but who really wants a connection with other women in her church, then the Mary and Martha Mail Circle may be the place for you! Email, snail mail,

the telephone and the internet are the means for being in touch and a virtual meeting is posted on the first day of the month at mailcircle.net. Now at 29 strong, these women enjoy a unique avenue in accomplishing their work with mission.

Interestingly enough, this is the circle that may have the widest range in ages and locations of its members—from college-aged to seniors, from throughout Mobile County to as far away as North Carolina! There is virtually (no pun intended) no woman who would feel out of touch with this circle!

If you want to know more about becoming involved with Mary and Martha Mail Circle, visit their website or contact Circle Coordinator Vera Moore at [email protected] or 251.639.2189.

Did you ever want to talk to someone but felt no one really wanted to listen? Stephen Ministers

are trained to listen well. They will listen to you and respond lovingly and non judgmentally. They are not there to tell you what you

should or should not do. If you need someone who will really listen to you as you work through a problem, you may want to consider a

Stephen Minister. For more information contact Donna Alexander at [email protected] or 251.342.0462, ext. 225.
