1 January 2016 By Babbie Mason You are God’s favorite. Do you find that hard to believe? Maybe you’re thinking, “Impossible! There’s no way I could ever be God’s favorite. I’ve got way too much baggage in my life!” Maybe you’re thinking, “Certainly people in the Bible may qualify to be God’s favorite, but I could never qualify for that prize!” That’s exactly what I was thinking when I heard the pastor say those words to our congregation. Curious, I went to the Bible to look for answers. Want to know what I found? In the book of John, chapter 17, Jesus is praying for His disciples and everyone who would believe their message. That means, over two thousand years ago, Jesus was praying for you! This is what He said as He prayed to our Father in Heaven in John 17:23: Think about it, dear friend. The God of the universe loves you just as much as He loves His own Son, Jesus. You see, on our best day, we are still at our worst. That’s why we need Jesus. You are not God’s favorite because of who you are. You are God’s favorite because of Who Jesus is! God not only loves you, He is in love with you! And the beautiful thing is He is waiting for you to love Him back! This love revelation has sparked a love revolution in my own life. Out of this newfound love walk with Jesus, I’ve written a great book called Embraced by God (Abingdon Press). It’s a 21 day life-affirming devotional to help you understand that you are loved and treasured by a great big God, who is concerned about every detail of your life. I am excited about coming to Christ UMC on Saturday, February 27 for your Annual Women’s Conference, to present this life-giving message. And I’ll be sharing some beautiful worship music on this theme to encourage your heart. We’ll spend the day together laughing, pondering and basking in the deep end of God’s love. I’m having the time of my life sharing this message with women everywhere. And women are responding to this great message of God’s amazing love! Isn’t it time you start the discovery of knowing who and whose you are? Join me on this life-changing journey and never again wonder if your life matters. I hope to see you soon! Don’t forget to bring a friend! Visit the back cover to find out how to register for the 2016 Annual Christ UMC’s Women’s Conference. JANUARY 2016

Faithfulness is a character trait that we all want other people to have. We want our spouse to be faithful to us through both good and bad times. We want the mechanic who is fixing our car to do a good job, get it finished on time, and to faithfully stand behind their repair job. We want our children to obey us and trust us, not simply because they will get special privileges if they do (not to mention avoiding special punishment if they don’t) but

because they trust that we want what is best for them. We are faithful to our children.

Everybody wants everybody else to be faithful. Yet faithfulness is a difficult trait to master. A quick survey of our culture reveals the truth that faithfulness is on the decline. People are not loyal to a company, an employer, a church, or a spouse these days. As a nation, we like to keep our options open. Young people call it “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out). They use it as an excuse to cancel plans if something better comes along. If it (whatever “it” is) is not fulfilling my needs and/or my wants, I am out of here.

But we all know the rewards of faithfulness. Even if we disagree with their choice, we give a nod of approval to the person who has stuck with their team over the years. We stand and applaud the couple who has been married for 50 years. We admire the person who retires with 35 years of service at the same company, and we think, “How did they do it?”

But, we know how they did it. As Forest Gump says, “I just kept running and running and running.” Is faithfulness really that simple?

On January 10th, we will begin our series Faithfulness in NewSong. In this series, we will learn about faithfulness through the Old Testament story of Samuel and uncover the importance of faithfulness in life despite fear, monotony, rejection, and disgrace.

FAITHFULNESSJim Kinder, NewSong Pastor

I PLAN TO...As we begin a new year, 2016, perhaps you’ve been thinking about some possible New Year resolutions. I’m sure one of your resolutions would never be, “I plan on staying away from church as many Sundays as possible.” Or, “I want to make sure I don’t grow spiritually in 2016.” I don’t believe any of us intentionally choose to fall into patterns that are destructive to our lives.

The Biblical definition of “sin” is to “miss the mark” or stray from the path.” The truth is…”we all have a tendency to

stray from the path.” To slip into patterns and habits that are not God’s desire for our lives. It takes “discipline” to be a faithful growing disciple of Jesus. Disciplines such as prayer, the study of scripture, generous giving, and regular worship attendance are vital to our development as faithful disciples.

Let’s all make a commitment in this new year to put Christ first in our lives and show it through spiritual disciplines. Let’s begin by being present in worship this Sunday.

In Christ,

Get started in the right direction with Starting Point. Learn about the

Christian faith, the mission of our church and membership. You will also learn how to get connected into the life

The process is designed to set us free! Sometimes everything in us wants to hold a grudge, point a finger, and remember the pain...God wants us to lay it down and let it go. This class will challenge and motivate us to forgive those who have hurt us, forgive the God that let it happen, and forgive ourselves totally! n INTENTIONAL LIVING BY JOHN C. MAXWELL | Wednesdays, beginning January 13 | 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Rm A-204 | Led by certified John Maxwell coach, Christian DeVries. “What if you could do anything you wanted to make the world better? What if you could make a difference on a larger scale? What if you could do something significant, something that would impact others and outlast you?” - John C. Maxwell. If you’ve ever sat back and looked at where you are in your life or felt insignificant, you’re not alone. If you’ve ever wondered if you matter, if you will leave anything behind or if you will be missed when you die, you’re not alone. John has experienced many of these life challenges, too—just like you. And he’s found a solution. You can achieve meaning and significance, and create a legacy that will shine/outlast/live on long after you’ve passed. Don’t leave your footprints in the sand where they will wash way; let intentional living show you how to leave footprints in the hearts and lives of those you love and leave a legacy that will last. Cost of materials $50.

n DISCIPLE I – FAST TRACK FORMAT | Wednesdays, beginning January 13 | 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Rm A-206 | Join leader, Rick Morgan, for the new, shortened format of Disciple I. A casual, discussion-style class format will enable you to ask questions and discuss topics in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Cost of materials is $40. For more information contact Rick Morgan at [email protected].

By Mike Rollins, Middle School Minister One funny thing to me about celebrating the new year is that we always make these resolutions and never keep them… or at least I do. We make resolutions to exercise more, eat healthier, lose weight, to get more organized, stop procrastinating, to sleep better, and to stress less. These New Year’s resolutions are great, but I have come to realize that for me they never really stick. They will stick for about a week or even a month, if I am lucky, but then I kind of just end up forgetting about it, or I just fall back to my old ways. I recently started taking up something for the New Year, instead of giving something up. As a result, it seemed like my resolutions lasted longer and some, even lasted the whole year.

This year, I would like to encourage you to pick something up! Some examples are: serving at a different non-profit each month or, serving with your family the entire year. By doing this, we going against our nature of trying to fix ourselves and changing it to be about helping others. I challenge you this new year to take up something as a family and use these new year’s resolutions to make a difference in someone else’s life.

By Ashley Walker, Director of Children’s MinistryHappy New Year! January is known for being a month of new beginnings. We tend to reflect on our lives and look for ways to change and create new habits. Although starting that new exercise regimen and diet is important for our physical well-being, we must not forget about our spiritual health. Setting aside time to spend with the Lord and serving Him should be our primary focus. “But be sure to fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.” 1 Sam. 12:24. When this is done, everything else seems to fall in place.

The Children’s Ministry has an exciting year planned for 2016 with many opportunities for serving with God’s children. Opportunities like to helping on Sunday mornings and with special events such as VBS, Elementary Fun Nights, and the Puppet Ministry. Let’s make 2016 the year to truly fulfill those New Year resolutions! “To this end, we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of His calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by His power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” - 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

By Rick Warren - For more information, visit danielplan.com The Daniel Plan is a ground-breaking healthy lifestyle program founded on Biblical principles and focused on The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. The program offers an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life areas. The essentials of faith and friends are what we call the “secret sauce” that makes The Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a supportive community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships. MOVING FORWARD INTO THE NEW YEARRob Blackwell, Church AdministratorAs we begin the new year, it’s a good time to review the foundational principles and goals of FORWARD, especially since we did not have a formal stewardship campaign in the fall. Remember, FORWARD is Christ UMC’s primary financial focus and provides the means for our tithes and offerings to meet both (a) the general ministry and operating needs of the church, and (b) the Seven Year Plan goal of aggressively reducing our debt. In January 2015, most of us acted on our intention to take a step up the Giving Ladder, with the goal of moving to a tithe or beyond as our standard of giving. That target continues as a spiritual goal of relationship and obedience for each of us. In addition, it supports the practical need of working together to fulfill Christ UMC’s ministry purpose. For those who turned in a commitment card in the fall of 2014, please be aware that the pledge amount displayed on your Contribution Statement represents your two-year commitment and is a helpful tool in keeping track. For those who did not turn in a commitment card, you can still do so at any time! Just go to christumcmobile.com/forwardcommitmentcard. Those cards help us in budgeting and planning, but if you would rather give without pledging, please realize that your participation is just as vital as those who pledge. If you have any questions, please contact Patricia or me at the church office.

Dictionary.com defines prayer as “a spiritual communion with God, as in supplication, thanksgiving, adoration, or confession.” Bill Hybels in his book, Too Busy Not to Pray says, “Prayer is alien to our proud human nature. And yet somewhere, someplace, probably all of us reach the point of falling to our knees, bowing our heads, fixing our attention on God and praying.” There are several great books on prayer in the Lighthouse Library. Maybe one of these is exactly what you need to strengthen and give new intentionality to your prayer life.
