HEADED TO PNG! April-June 2013 OUTREACH UPDATE CHRISTINA 2013 INTRO TO PRIMARY HEALTH CARE After 12 weeks of lectures we are heading to Papua New Guinea to provide love, hope and healthcare to the people of the Oro Province What are we learning? WE’RE GOING TO PAPUA NEW GUINEA! he Introductions to Primary Health Care School is not one for the faint of heart. It’s a school that beckons those that long to pioneer and establish new ground. It calls for those whose heart beats for the nations, to see justice prevail, the poor and needy fed, diseases eradicated, and to see God’s people empowered. This is no ordinary school. The IPHC has a unique relationship that tickles the underbelly of poverty and community development. It runs hand in hand with YWAM Medical Ships Australia to not only disciple a nation but to meet the people’s needs spiritually and physically. The IPHC are forerunners for the medical ship to help bring prevention and awareness of healthcare. It trains and equips health care workers for the developing nations, but not just developing nations, for the nation of PNG. As the IPHC we have come from all difference walks of life, but are joined together for a specific purpose. Our goal is to go into the remotest of places to meet a practical need. Knowledge is something we carry and learn from the start. From mother and child health to target diseases, we take what we know to set up clinics in the village or the local healthcare centers. Training health care workers about emergency Dental care and health issues along with working alongside the medical ship in PNG will be part of our mission. We strive to not sit back and watch as people go in need. Keys to Primary Healthcare - Vitals This first week we learned the 8 Keys to Primary Healthcare, God’s heart for the poor and needy and we learned how to take vitals. Mother and Child Health During the 2nd week we learned the importance of a mother and child’s nutrition, how to support a balanced diet in a developing nation using local foods, possible complications and warning signs during pregnancy, and how to care for pregnant Mums in times of trouble. Anatomy and Physiology This week we learned the foundations of the body and how it works, we learned about the intricacies and delicate nature of our body systems and how it work together as a whole. Target Diseases Week 4 we learned about target diseases, how to identify and treat them as well as how to give life saving vaccinations. Community Development This week we learned about how to help a Community develop into a prosperous and safe place for it’s inhabitants. We learned how to empower a community and give them the tools to bring about solutions for their community. We also learned how to (and made) homemade water filters!
