    Not ForgottenPuerto Alegria, Peru

December 26, 2010 January 5, 2011"Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of herwomb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the

    palms of my hands.Isaiah 49: 15-16

    Not Forgotten

Not Forgotten is an organization that is compelled by the love of Christ to provide for thephysical, educational, and spiritual needs of impoverished, abandoned, and oppressed people ofthe world, so that they may improve their quality of life, find salvation through Jesus Christ, and be

empowered to affect change in their communities. For more information, please see our website at www.notforgotten.org or visit our blog at

    Street Children

Street children are a social phenomenon throughout Central and South America. As aresult of extreme poverty, broken familial ideas and structure, and a lack of cultural accountability, single mothers across the country are forced to support their large families off of nothing morethan a few dollars a month. Inevitably, it becomes impossible for the mother to provide for all ofher children, and for survival of the majority, certain children are let go. The eldest son, typically

between 8 and 12 years old, is kicked out of the house, thrown into the streets and forced to fendfor himself. Once on the streets, there are only two ways for a street boy to survive: throughstealing or through prostitution. The first option comes with the high risk of being caught andbrutally beaten by police, and the second comes with a loss of dignity and permanent emotionalscarring. Often referred to as piranhas in Peru, these helpless boys are degraded and placedbeneath the dogs in terms of social importance. The general belief is that if a street boy isabandoned by God and his own mother, that there can be no good in him.

At Not Forgotten, a different belief is in our hearts. We believe that street children are Godschildren too, and that theyve been adopted into his family. We seek to help these children in theirplight against the struggles and injustices that they face by helping to provide a caring home, a

quality education, and to empower them with the knowledge of Gods love and grace.

    Puerto Alegria

Puerto Alegria is a boys home for street children operated by Scripture Union of Peru. It islocated about an hour up the Itaya River from the major jungle city of Iquitos. Puerto Alegria wascreated in order to provide a home where street children from Iquitos could live and attend schoolaway from the distractions and temptations of city life.

    Not Forgotten

Team Covenant(Please sign and return with your application)

I realize that the following principles are crucial to the effectiveness, quality, and safety of our mission together

As a member of the short-term mission team, I promise and covenant, by Gods abounding grace, to:1. Remember that I am a representative of Not Forgotten and Jesus Christ, and as such I will seek to represent the

spiritual values, moral conduct and likeness to Christ that are embraced and embodied in that assembly.2. Remember that I am a guest working at the invitation of the personnel in the host country. I agree to respect and

support their leadership.3. Remember that I have come not only to help, but also to learn. I may be exposed to procedures and practices th

feel are ineffective or insufficient. I may also be confronted by attitudes that I feel are narrow or close-minded. this occurs I will resist the temptation to correct my hosts and inform them about how things are done back inthe United States. I will rather be open to the opportunity of learning other cultures methods and ideas.

    4. Respect my hosts culture and distinctive practices of Christianity. I recognize that the Christian faith hasmany different faces throughout the world, and that one of the purposes of my trip is to witness and experience

faith lived out in a different culture.5. Develop and consistently maintain a servants attitude toward all nationals and my teammates.6. Respect our team leader(s) and their decisions.7. Refrain from gossip and keep my promise of giving only good reports. If there are policies and decisions made

the leaders with which I disagree or do not understand, I will go to the team leaders in private and make myconcerns known to them rather than to other team members. In so doing I will avoid the possibility of sowing sof dissension and division.

    8. Be patient, forbearing, and forgiving toward the failings of the other members on the team.

  • 8/9/2019 Christmas 2010 Packet

    11/25

    9. Refrain from complaining. I realize that travel can present numerous unexpected and undesirable circumstancesbut the rewards of conquering such circumstances are desirable. I will resolve to be flexible, supportive, andadaptive on such occasions rather than grumbling when circumstances are difficult.

    10. Respect the work that is going on in the host country with its pastors and leaders. I realize that our team wbe there for just a short time, but the local church is there long term. I will respect their knowledge, insights, aninstructions.

    11. Refrain from negative comments or hostile discussions concerning the host countrys politics and culture.

    12. Remember not to be exclusive in my relationships with the team. If my sweetheart or spouse is on the team wwill make every effort to interact regularly with all team members of the team.

    13. Refrain from activity or undue interest that could be construed as a romantic interest toward a national. Irealize that certain actions that seem innocent in my own culture may be inappropriate in another culture.

    14. Refrain from any consumption of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and liquors. While this is notattempt to bind the conscience, I understand that such indulgence may cause another to stumble. I realize andaccept that failure to adhere to this mandate will result in my exclusion from further short-term trips.

    15. Refrain from use of any tobacco or tobacco related products.16. Seek to live and exemplary life of holiness and obedience to Gods commands.

    Scripture Unon Guidelines

    Set a good example

In Peru you will stand out. Therefore peoples eyes will be on you and how you conduct yourself. It

is vital therefore that you reflect characteristics and actions that would glorify God.

    Loyalty

is your main support network; therefore all members should respect one another and be

completely supportive and loyal, wanting the best for, and thinking the best of each other.

    Respect the local culture

Whenever looking at culture, we need to remember that cultures differ in God-given ways and also

reflect something of Gods creative nature. Therefore, all cultures are precious and to be

    valued.

    Smoking

If you are a smoker we ask that you refrain during your brief stay in Peru, where it could have a

damaging effect on the reputation of Scripture Union.

    Alcohol

Alcohol should not be consumed throughout your time in Peru.

    Drugs

The use of illegal drugs is prohibited.

    Respecting Leadership

While in Peru, you are under the responsibility of your team leaders for issues that concern internal

group discipline and the overall authority of your Scripture Union hosts for guidance.

Therefore you must agree to respect their leadership and share any grievances you may have.

    Scripture Union Liabilities

SUPeru excludes liability for personal injury or death suffered by a work team member as a result

    of:

    a) events outside its control or the control of the officially appointed leadership;

    b) actions by the work team member which are at variance with the Guidelines;

    c) actions taken by work team members that are deemed illegal according to Peruvian law;

  • 8/9/2019 Christmas 2010 Packet

    15/25

    d) actions taken by work team members which are in contravention of, or inconsistent with, the

instructions of the officially appointed leadership.

If the Guidelines are not complied with, disciplinary action may well be take

and the offending participant will be asked to leave the work team and return home.

Should a participants attitude or actions be deemed inappropriate this should be addressed jointlyby the work team leader and the Scripture Union staff member appointed to the team. Should this

attitude or behaviour continue, the leaders are fully entitled to start disciplinary action.

There are four procedures inviolved in this process, however I would like to highlight that it is only

in extreme cases where the situation would come to this.

When a warning is given the work team member is informed that her/his performance remain below

the level satisfactory to the movement, within a stated period, she/he will be subject to further

    disciplinary action.

Warnings, given in the following order:

    Oficial verbal warning

    First written warning

    Final written warning,

Final disciplinary action (usually dismissal) and repatriation

Frequently asked questions by those going to

IQUITOS/PUERTO ALEGRA:May we play card games while in Per? The children we work with often associated playing cards withgambling and a sordid past they have moved beyond. Sensitivity in this area is requested.

May I bring my CD player to listen to music? Yes, but bear in mind that any item of this sort is atemptation to the people you will meet.

What construction work will we do? In Iquitos brick laying and masonry will continue on the older boyshome. Work in Puerto Alegra, now full steam ahead, will include carpentry and painting detail on anotherdormitory for the boys.

Where will we stay? The first night will be in the Lima airport. Then, in the boys dormitory in PuertoAlegra, which includes running COLD water, bunk beds and screened rooms. Two people per room.

How do we travel from Lima? A 90 minute flight from Lima to Iquitos (Amazon) in a very nice jet, followedby a 90 minute boat trip to Puerto Alegra.

What kind of clothing should we wear on the work site? Clothing that is comfortable to work in, butgirls should avoid wearing mid drift shirts.

  • 8/9/2019 Christmas 2010 Packet

    16/25

Do we need a dress or skirt for Sunday? No. This is not necessary, but the clothing should be clean.Wearing mid drifts and torn jeans would be offensive and confusing to the Peruvians you will beworshipping with.

What will we do aside from construction work? Share a well deserved plunge in the cool Itaya with theboys from our center and the piranhas from their river. Your day off will include an eye opening walkthrough the Beln market and lunch at the center in Iquitos, followed by a leisurely afternoon at Lake

Quistococha and shopping at the handicraft market. Upon returning to Lima, you will eat with the boys inthe S.U. center, see a choreography presentation, and plenty of shopping at the local handicraft market!

What is the temperature like in Iquitos? Can be extremely hot and humid! Be prepared!

Is there a telephone number for emergencies? 011-511-433-4128 (S.U. Office)011-511-358-2125 (Clarks)

What address should we put on the customs form? Avda. Bolivia 180, Lima

Do we need to bring tools for our work? No, unless indicated on the Wish List which you will receive.

However, you should bring work boots or tennis shoes, gloves and a personal water bottle.

How can we call home? You can buy a telephone card for about $6 which can be used when you are inIquitos.

GIFT AND GIVING POLICYUNIN BBLICA DEL PER

We have been singularly blessed these last few years with a growing number of very

generous friends coming to us on Work Teams. In order to avoid a generous act of giving to endup causing a problem (This has only happened a couple of times in the past), we have written outthe following Guidelines.

    ABOUT GIFTS:

    1. We shall send out to all Teams a wish List, items that would be of great value to us here inPeru. From that list, items may be selected and brought.

    2. There will be a separate short list of foodstuffs we really would appreciate your bringing inorder to strike a balance with our pretty much Peruvian cooking for Work Team eating!

    3. If you have been before and/or have something very specific in mind, we can e-mail back andforth about bringing it.

    ABOUT GIVING:

The real danger and ultimately very negative results of spoiling are great, particularly so inthe case of our dear street boys. So we have to work together on this one. Unfortunately you will

  • 8/9/2019 Christmas 2010 Packet

    17/25

basically have to forego the pleasure of seeing them open the package in exchange for thegreater good of doing it to their advantage. Therefore:

    1. All gifts (clothing, sheets, shoes, etc.) will be given to the person in Peru responsible for yourWork Team or to the person he/she designates.

    2. Marty Clark and Bertha Lavado have the overall task of receiving, sorting and distributingitems according to the requests they receive from our staff in charge of the various ministries. This has to do with teams going to Kimo, Kawai, Ica, and Kusi. Those teams going to Iquitoswill take all donations there and give them to Kely Villacis who is in charge of sorting anddistributing there. In the case that a team brings a large item from the list, previousconsultation will advise you whether to take it to Iquitos or leave it in Lima, but clothing, toys, games, etc., go with you to Iquitos/Puerto Alegra.

    3. Clothes, etc. used by Work Team members and left behind are washed, then processed asin #2.

    4. Sometimes it is appropriate for the gifts to be given to the boys or workmen by Work Teammembers, having made satisfactory arrangements previously with the Scripture Union personin charge of your team. Whenever this is advisable, obviously it is the ideal situation.

    5. We try to discourage boys and workers from asking for things (but they still do), and we dowell until someone slips up and gives in! So, please be strict on yourself.

    6. When gifts are given we always tell them who it is from (not necessarily the specific name ofthe giver) and encourage them to thank God, from whom all good things come.

    7. To whatever degree is possible, we appreciate Work Team members dressing simply,

leaving excess ornaments back home, and keeping their belongings out of view as much aspossible. We want them to remember you for your smile, your warmth, your love, not for whatyou have and they never will.

Please feel free to write for clarification on any of this. We want to get the ultimate mileageout of your generosity.

How Do I Go About Raising Support For This

Mission Trip?Pray: Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established. -Proverbs

    16:3Write a prayer/support letter:

Subjects that could be included in the letter are: A brief update of your current life A brief outline of the mission project (i.e. what the needs are in the country we

are going to and why we are going) A brief outline of what you will be doing Your need for both prayer and financial support. Tell them the specific amount

you are trying to raise, the dates you will be on the trip, and that you are looking

for a team of people to go with you through their prayer and financial support.

A sample letter is included in this packet:

Feel free to use different parts to make it suitable for you and your specificsituation.

Give people the bottom line and make it simple for them to know how torespond

A small response card is also a good idea:

The main thing to have on the response card is the opportunity for them to give,

to pray, and to have them put their name and address on it Include a self addressed envelope, for them to return the checks and response

cards to youthe easier it is for them to respond, the greater the chance they willbecome part of your team

Make checks payable to Not Forgotten Checks should be sent directly to you in your self-addressed envelopes Personally keep track of amounts of money and when it was sent in

Once your support checks come in:

Put the collected checks in an envelope with a note that states your name and

address Give it to Kristen McKee ([email protected])

    Not Forgotten will:

Make a receipt for each of your donations and send the receipts to yoursupporters for tax purposes

Write a brief thank you note to them before you leave on the trip:

    23/25

Tell them news about the triphow excited you are about going Mention prayer requests Thank them for their prayer and/or financial support

If you have more than the needed amount come in:

Send it in and we can use it as a miscellaneous fund to help cover others onthe team who have trouble raising support, to purchase supplies for ScriptureUnion, and for emergencies

One of the most important parts in raising support is the follow up:

Plan on sending your supporters a follow up letter to share with them about thetrip. As a supporter, this simple letter can mean so muchto hear about all theLord did and to know that they were a vital part in the ministry overseas.

Below is an example letter and response card

    March 2, 2010

Dear Mr. Jones,As you may have already heard, we are going back to Peru! Last year during Spring

Break our team of 8 Samford students discovered the joy of serving God in the jungles of Peru. This year God has blessed us tremendously and we are heading back to the same place March19-28 with 23 students! While we are there we will be constructing homes for street boys, leading Vacation Bible Schools, and sharing the love of Christ. We are all very excited to seehow God is going to work. There is still much preparation needed before we go and we need allof the help we can get. After having been to Peru several times and having experienced delayedplanes, lost luggage, and physical illness, it has become evident that the enemy will do anything

to discourage and impair those who are doing Gods work. For that reason I beseech you to be apart of our prayer army. Spiritual warfare is very real and we need as many warriors as we canhave praying for our team. Prayer needs include:

God would unite our team in spirit and in purpose

God would make us humble servants

Gods love would be revealed through us

God would prepare us spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically

God would move in the hearts of those that we meet

God would keep our team healthy and safe

That we would trust in God to provide our every need

We are also still in need of financial support. This trip will cost our team a total of over$27,000, and despite our efforts in fundraising we are still in need of approximately $4,000. Thisincludes all of our airfare, lodging, transportation, food, and ministry materials. If you feel led,we would greatly appreciate any financial support you could provide. We must raise all of ourfunds by March 11. If you decide to support us through prayer or financially, please fill out theform below and return it in the self-addressed envelope. Thank you so much for considering thisinvestment in the lives of others. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me viaemail at [email protected]. I look forward to see what God has in store, and to see theimpact we can have when we are obedient to him.

    In Christ,

    Jane Smith
