From the Desk of Father Jonathan
This week I had the blessing to help give a retreat to 200 priests and seminarians from around the country at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio. What a blessing it was for me to be with so many fellow priests. They gave me more by their example of spiritual fervor and their desire to renew their priesthood than I could have ever given them. Thank you for your prayers! Good news: for the second year in a row our parish achieved the goal for the Cardinal's Appeal. I know that for so many of you this has meant considerable sacrifice. Some more good news: it looks like Fr Livinus will be moving back into our rectory next week, at least for the time being, after spending two months at another parish. God provides!! One last thing: have you invited anyone to come with you to mass recently? Keep your eyes open for someone who might just need your encouragement.
God bless,
Father Jonathan

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Sunday Gospel: Luke 9, 51-62
Words are funny things. Over time they can change meaning. Take diversity. It used to mean opposite, different. Humans reactions to difference range from suspicion to violence. As our world has shrunk we try to make diversity into a positive thing. One Catholic parish, with many new Spanish and Vietnamese parishioners, described diversity in glowing terms in its mission statement. A parishioner commented that as actually practiced there, diversity still meant separate activities in worship, faith formation, community involvement, and giving. Some parishioners said to the pastor: “Those people don’t give their fair share” (meaning money). Saint Paul calls this “biting and devouring one another” (Galatians 5:15). He reminds us that the greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. That’s a challenge when we find it difficult to get along with family and friends. But as Christ’s disciples, everyone in our parish is a brother or sister in Christ. Everyone. No exceptions.
