October 13, 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, With great gratitude to our committee and to everyone who broke bread with us, I want to report on our successful Saint Teresa Parish Benefit Luncheon, held last Sunday at a beautiful local restaurant that is such a blessing for our neighborhood: Li Greci's Staaten on Forest Avenue. Everywhere I went the next day, I met people telling me how much they enjoyed the whole event - reuniting with parishioners and making new friends, eating the delicious food, recognizing the high quality of our honorees, admiring the planning and smooth flow of activity, hearing the short meaningful speeches, and taking home some wonderful raffles and prizes. When our Parish Finance Council began exploring this Parish Benefit Luncheon idea three years ago, we chose three main goals. The first is simply to bring our people together for an enjoyable social event. A family needs to eat together, and our Patron's Feast Day is a great opportunity. The second goal is, each year, to honor a few worthy parishioners who have for a long time been quietly doing great things for others. By identifying a few, we also draw attention to their co-workers and to the importance of their ministries. And a third purpose is part of mine and every pastor's responsibility: to raise money for the present and future work of our parish. Being honored on Sunday was a Saint—Saint Teresa of the Infant Jesus, patron of our parish, at 10:30 Mass. During the 12 Noon Luncheon, we honored five strong Catholic women and men: Mrs. Mary Ann Christoffersen and Mrs. Kathleen Fawcett, for their years leading our Sister Margaret Mary Food Pantry; Mr. Anthony DeFazio, for his service as Parish Trustee, Parish Council President, and Chairman of our RENEW+REBUILD campaign; Mr. Michael DiTrani, an extraordinary Scoutmaster who helped Scout Troop 37 to serve many families and inspire many boys to become Eagle Scouts; and Sister Maureen Murray, a Carmelite Sister for the Aged and Infirm, who for 20 years has been Executive Director of ArchCare at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, a five-star Catholic home for the elderly which has been such a blessing for Staten Islanders in need of loving skillful care. A particular source of happiness for me is the friendship and bonding of our committee members. When people volunteer for a big event like this, and are willing to share their ideas, take responsibility for important parts, persevere through meetings - we get to know and appreciate one another very much. Therefore I want to thank these parishioners who gave so generously of their time and talent: Co-Chairmen John Lauria and Charlie LaGanga, Stephanie and Jon Byrne, Angela, Melissa, Bob, and Nick Tronolone, Joe Patella, Lynn Randle, Rich Nellis, Ginevra Porcelli, Janet Scaffa, Ann Cuneo, Frank Schiano, Anthony DeFazio, EJ LaGanga, Theresa Perera, and Lisa Naughton. For us to see everything come together last Sunday in such a beautiful way that made many people happy was a great reminder to all of us to volunteer for good causes and become part of something bigger than ourselves. And lest I keep you in suspense, I am happy to report that besides all the other accomplishments, this second annual SAINT TERESA PARISH BENEFIT LUNCHEON raised a needed and appreciated $11,000 for our parish. This weekend we wish a Happy Columbus Day to all the people who celebrate their Italian and Spanish ethnic heritage, and who focus on the skill and courage and faith of this great Catholic explorer. If you are in Manhattan on Monday, especially if you are going to the parade on Fifth Avenue, consider attending the beautiful Columbus Day Mass that starts at 9:30am in Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Some seats are reserved, but after 9:15, everyone is welcome. I would like to offer a belated holy day greeting to all of our Jewish relatives, friends, and neighbors. Tuesday evening October 8 was the start of Yom Kippur, the very important Day of Atonement. That morning I read in the New York Post THE JOY OF “I’M SORRY” - an article by Cardinal Dolan. He was expressing his great respect and admiration for a faith community that takes seriously an annual day to admit sin and ask for God’s forgiveness. If you can find that article online, you will have something good to think about. In that column, Cardinal Dolan quoted six magic words that can help everyone in their own relationships. He heard them as a young priest from one of his pastors. I will quote that paragraph for you: "During my happy years as a young parish priest, I often heard my pastor counsel the young couples that he was preparing for matrimony. He told them: 'The six essential words you must repeat often if your married life is to be faithful, and forever, are I love you and I am sorry.' Msgr. William Belford

PSALM 104—PRAISE OF GOD THE CREATOR

Lord God, how great you are! You made the moon to mark the months; the sun knows its time for its setting. When you spread the darkness it is night and the beasts of the forest creep forth. The young lions roar for their prey and ask their food from God. At the rising of the sun they steal away and go to rest in their dens. Man goes forth to his work to labor until evening falls...
