Our mission at Mundelein is simply stated but profoundly engaging: we form parish priests who are prepared and excited to bring others to Christ.

In the words of the Second Vatican Council, a seminary should function as the heart of the diocese it serves. It provides a bridge between the individual parishes, led by their parish priests, and the entire diocesan community, led by its bishop. Furthermore, a diocesan priest himself should serve as a bridge between his people and the Lord, helping them to enrich their own spiritual journeys. This triad of “heart,” “bridge,” and “parish priest” beautifully captures both the reason that Mundelein Seminary exists and the mission the Holy Spirit impels us to pursue.

Mundelein is home to 200 seminarians from 35 dioceses across the country and around the world. But what they all have in common is that they are preparing to serve a specific community that is centered on a local Church in obedience to their bishop. In other words, every man at Mundelein Seminary has a heart that is burning to serve as a parish priest.

But the modern Church is dynamically changing. The parish of today can be vastly different from that of a generation or even a decade ago. As smaller parishes are consolidated into single parishes of much larger extent, as social media

becomes increasingly more pervasive, as more and more Catholics are raised without basic catechesis, and as the pressures of a secular culture multiply moral challenges, a parish priest needs to be a man who is intellectually well-grounded in the Truth. He must be socially capable of not only sending a tweet but also personally interacting with people from all walks of life and in every conceivable pastoral situation. Above all, he must be a man of deep interior prayer. At Mundelein, our academic and formation teams integrate their missions into a common goal of forming priests with precisely these qualities.

This annual report is a reflection of your prayerful support of our seminarians as they prepare in mind, body and spirit to serve our Church as parish priests. The seminarians, priests and dedicated lay women and men you encounter in these pages are all driven by a single mission.

Together with you, in Christ, we are Mundelein. We form parish priests.

Yours in the Heart of Christ,

Very Reverend John KartjeRector/President

GREETINGS FROM MUNDELEIN SEMINARY!

The University of Saint Mary of the Lake is regarded as one of the top universities for the education and formation of parish priests and Catholic parish leadership. The flagship program of the university is Mundelein Seminary, the graduate school of theology, named after the late Cardinal George Mundelein who built this campus in the 1920s. Mundelein Seminary is now one of the largest Catholic seminary programs in the country, with 200 seminarians enrolled from 35 dioceses. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake

also includes The Institute for Diaconal Studies, The Institute for Lay Formation, The Institute for Ongoing Formation, Instituto de Liderazgo Pastoral and The Liturgical Institute. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, oversees the university as chancellor and the Very Reverend John Kartje was appointed the university’s eleventh rector/president in 2015. Father Kartje is a biblical scholar and astrophysicist and has been on the faculty of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary since 2009.

Cheryl Eid lives on the streets in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood,

and on a brisk November Saturday morning, she was in the hall at

St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 4827 N. Kenmore Ave., having

breakfast and getting her hair cut.

“I just want a trim,” she said. “You know, when you’re living on the

street, it’s hard to maintain hygiene, appearance.”

Eid was one of many Uptown residents who, on Nov. 14, took

advantage of free haircuts arranged by Radley Alcantara, an

archdiocesan seminarian studying at the University of Saint

Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary. This was the second year

Alcantara arranged the free haircuts at the church. He calls it

Angel Hair Ministries.

The idea came a few years ago, when he was studying Spanish in

Ecuador and helped out at a Franciscan parish that had a ministry

of providing free haircuts to the poor in the community. They also

provided meals.

“When I came back a couple of summers ago I said, ‘I wanna do

this in Chicago,’ Alcantara told the Catholic New World.

He chose November to hold the event because it’s usually cold

outside and the gathering would provide an opportunity for

residents to get warm. Alcantara also wanted to build community

so started the event with breakfast and ended with lunch.

Volunteers helped with all parts of the event, including washing

hair and helping people peruse donated coats and clothing.

Everything for the event was donated — from the food and

decorations to the professional salon chairs and hair cutting

supplies. Alcantara also raised funds to buy anything extra that

they needed. Volunteers — including a few seminarians — cut hair

for the morning.

“I practiced cutting hair on the seminarians so I could cut hair well

here,” Alcantara said.

St. Thomas of Canterbury already has an outreach ministry that

includes a soup kitchen twice a week, a food pantry and a clothes

closet, so for Father Tirso Villaverde, parish pastor, Alcantara’s idea

fit right in.

“They have been very appreciative of it because they need it

and just the personal attention that they’ve been getting, it’s

something that many of these people usually don’t get,” Villaverde

said of the people they serve. “These are God’s people, and these

are the ones who are forgotten.”

Cheryl McNary came for breakfast at 6 a.m. and was staying all

morning and through lunchtime. She’s a regular at the church.

What did the event mean to her?

“It means the world to me. If it means that much to me, can you

imagine what it means to everyone else? I do have a home. I’m

kind of stable,” she said. “But there’s a lot of people who have

no home.”

Sometimes Doing a Good Thing Involves a Haircut BY JOYCE DURIGA

“Just the personal attention that they’ve been getting, it’s something that many of these people usually don’t get. These are God’s people, and these are the ones who are forgotten.”

Mundelein ConnectionsWhile Father Randy Timmerman was growing up in the

small town of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, he maintained a strong

connection to the Catholic faith. He participated in parish life

on a daily basis and attended Holy Name Seminary, a nearby

diocesan high school during the weekdays. His devotion led him

to attend a college seminary in the Twin Cities for a little more

than a year, but he didn’t feel the Call of the Lord intensely and

soon transferred to the University of Wisconsin and received his

bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

After graduating, Father Timmerman traveled to Europe, taught

in England, and traveled alone with a backpack for four months,

beginning to settle into the voice of the Lord, once again

reawakening to the gift of His love. This daily reassuring presence

led him to discern the call of seminary when he returned home.

At Mundelein, Father Timmerman’s heart was finally at peace.

“I have tremendous gratitude for Mundelein,” says Father

Timmerman. “For the brotherhood, the honesty, the friendship

and the joy of going through the discernment process together,

and sharing the faith and the reflections on why we were all there

– to answer the Call of the Lord.”

Endowed with His Spirit, Mundelein Seminary acts out of love for

the Catholic faith and a desire to ensure the readiness of its next

generation of parish priests. With the support of our sending

Bishops, faithful friends and parish communities, we can continue

to serve as the “Heart of the Diocese” by providing formation for

the future of the Priesthood.

Father Timmerman’s time at Mundelein shaped him into the

priest he is today at his parish at St. Denis in Madison, Wisconsin,

staying close to the Lord in prayer and letting the gift of the

Eucharist draw him closer to His love. Father Timmerman

continues to fall deeper in love with the Lord, His people, and

their stories, celebrations and burdens.

“That is a means by which the Lord continues to prune and draw

me closer to Him,” says Father Timmerman. “Despite situations

of hardship, the call of the Lord will bring you tremendous peace

and delight.”

Statement of Activities for the year ended June 30, 2016

What a gift you have given to the world! Your prayers and donations to Mundelein Seminary help us form the

next generation of parish priests. But what is a parish priest? What makes him

unique? We all have our own stories to answer those questions. A parish priest is the

one there for the community, for the lonely, for the lost. He is the guide, the shepherd that helps give us a perspective from the Gospels, and leads us into a deeper relationship with Christ. He works to inspire us, one person at a time. That is a powerful thing.

Our department exists at Mundelein Seminary to tell everyone we can about the impact of a parish priest. Over the years, we have created a tremendous community of supporters that is now more than 20,000 strong.

Our rector, Father John Kartje, has given us all a charge to continue the momentum of Mundelein. We seek to tell as many people as possible about the great things that are happening here. Our formation program is founded in tradition with extraordinary students and dedicated faculty and staff. This is a special place with so many stories to tell: Stories from the seminarians themselves, from our alumni who work in parishes all over the world, and stories of our supporters and what bonds them to the mission of Mundelein.

Throughout this coming year, we will bring you many stories so that you can see and hear how your support is making an impact.

Every day, I come to work thrilled that I get to talk to people about one of the most important missions on the planet: supporting the men called to be parish priests. These men are dedicating their lives to serve others as a disciple of Christ. We want our parish priests to be so many things: charismatic, passionate, have integrity, humble, faithful, inspiring, persevering, positive, flexible and driven. So many of our parish priests illustrate many, if not all of those qualities.

I look forward to sharing more of their stories in the weeks and months to come. Be sure to visit us at usml.edu, sign up for our email newsletter, or check us out on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to stay connected.

Thank you again for your support and dedication to Mundelein Seminary. This is an exciting place at an exciting time.
