Hello fellow Parishioners of Ascension and St. Bernard

While doing a furnace check at Ascension a couple weeks ago Sherry was in the process of writing one of the bulletin col-umns. She made the comment that there are five weekends in March and that she was looking for someone to write the col-umn for the last weekend. She asked if I wanted to give it a try...so here goes. Normally when I am asked to write a letter or give a talk for church it is about the need for more money. This week you are in luck. I am writing about one of the most important aspects to having a vibrant and successful parish, and that is its volun-teers. Ascension and St. Bernard’s are blessed to have the many volunteers that we do. Some of the volunteer positions are behind the scenes in the day to day running of our two par-ishes and some are out in the open where parishioners can see what you are doing. One is just as important as the other. If I where to start listing all the areas where volunteers are used and needed this column would take up the whole bulletin and then I would probably still miss some. You might ask yourself, why should I volunteer at church? If I don’t someone else will, maybe. What is in it for me? A few years ago I attended a fu-neral here at Ascension. In the pew in front of me sat a couple that I knew from town. They are members of another church in town. He leaned over to his wife and said this is by far the most beautifully decorated church in NYA. It made me feel good hearing this knowing that I am not only a member here, but also involved with keeping it this way. St. Bernard just finished an extensive interior redecoration. It looks beautiful. This was done due to a donation from a promi-nent family of St. Bernard’s, but also because of all the volun-teer labor and help. Including that of the decorating committee, the volunteers that helped move things out of and back into the church as needed, and the volunteers that cleaned when it was finished. They all have something to be very proud of now. So where can I volunteer? What can I do? God gave every-body some kind of special talent. Maybe it is your voice - join one of the choirs. Maybe you are good at talking to people - be a greeter. The finance councils are looking for members. The new Joint Mission Team is set for now, but will be looking for a new member from each parish come January. Are you a good cook - the ladies doing the faith formation meals could always use more help. Ascension is looking for members to form a new grounds and building committee. This committee would be looking at the current buildings and grounds and making recommendations for future updates or additions. Maybe you don’t want to get that involved. Spring will come soon believe it or not. St Bernard’s usually has a cleanup day. Ascension is always looking for help in the spring for cleanup. Volunteer for one day or afternoon. Are you new to the area, maybe not a member of one of the church’s yet, what a better way to get to know some of the parishioners and feel more welcome. Ascension and St. Bernard’s are blessed to have all the dedicated volunteers that they have, but more are always needed and welcome. After reading this you say to yourself, YES I would like to give it a try and volunteer for something. You can contact one of the church offices or any of the group leaders that you might know and they can get you in touch with the person in charge of the area you would like to help with.

Jack Lano, Ascension Trustee, parishioner and volunteer
