SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – December 4, 2016
What does the word “Advent” mean?
The word Advent comes from the Latin “Adventus” and literally means “coming.” During this season, we eagerly await the celebration of the birth of Christ at Christmas, looking forward to His coming with joy and anticipation. However, we must not let this time
go to waste – if all we do is wait impatiently for Christmas morning, we are not using Advent to its fullest. Instead, Advent is a great time to reflect on our relationship with God and to avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Just as we would prepare for a special guest coming to our home by cleaning it and making it beautiful, we should also
prepare for Christ’s coming by making our souls beautiful for His arrival.

In our weekly “Did you know?” section, we’ll try to explain “mysteries of the Mass” and other parts of the
Catholic faith. If you have a question you’d like to submit, please email [email protected].

The next Parish Council meeting will be Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 PM in the Social Hall. All
parishioners are welcome to attend.
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – December 4, 2016
27th Annual National Night of Prayer
Thursday, December 8th after the 7 PM Mass
It was on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception that Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the unborn and of the Americas, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. St.
Juan Diego’s feast day is Dec. 9. Throughout the country, there will be prayers to end abortion and to
pray for healing of those who are suffering from abortion from 9 PM to 1 AM. The Blessed Sacrament
will be exposed following Mass until 9 PM in the main Church. Please stay after Mass for a while.
We will end with Benediction.
St. Ambrose
St. Ambrose, a bishop from the late 300s, had not set out to be a
member of the clergy – in fact, he wasn’t even baptized when he was nominated and ran away
when he was appointed! Still, Ambrose eventually relented to the will of God and
entered his position whole-heartedly. He used the oratorical skills he’d developed as a lawyer and a
governor to fight some of the biggest heresies of his time, including Arianism, a popular heresy that
called into question Jesus’ divinity. Ambrose had a deep love for the poor and even gave away all of his
property to help free captives in the empire. His feast day is December 7. St. Ambrose, pray for us!
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – December 4, 2016
The Prophets: Bible Study
God Is Calling You to a Deeper Relationship with Him
St. John the Evangelist Parish will begin The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy on Wednesday, January 18 at 7:00PM and Monday, January 23 at 9:30AM.
If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is the Bride, then the prophets can be
seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and
announce the blessings of faithfulness, their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom.
To register fill out the form in next week’s bulletin or the forms on the bulletin boards in the chapel.
For more information contact: Jean 845-260-2643 or Margaret 845-621-7000.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – December 4, 2016
EVITEMOS “NAVI-DA-ME” y CELEBREMOS NAVIDAD
