Our School

This past week was a short week because we celebrated the Columbus Day holiday. It followed a well- deserved long weekend after the busy week before with our field trip to Millers’ Farm Pumpkin Patch and our Hispanic Month celebration! We also had our Catholic Identity Day last Friday and were able to wear our 2019 - 2020 Catholic Identity shirts for the first time this year! Next week promises to be a relatively quiet week as we are almost done with our first quarter of school and begin our preparations for Spirit Week. Our Kindergarten students continue to visit our classrooms each day and share information about the Italian culture covering topics from music to clothing and food to religion! They have done a wonderful job so far and we are looking forward to seeing what they come up with next! As always, we invite you to stop by any time to visit our school and see our students in action. Our school office hours are 7:40 am until 3:40 pm Monday through Friday. You can also visit our website for more information about school activities and events at www.saintjohnsschool.org. Join us daily for our LiveStream broadcast of our morning and afternoon prayers daily at 8:05 am and 2:50 pm. Find the link on our website!

Ordinary Time: 2019 October 20th, 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time The first reading is taken from the book of Exodus 17:8-13. In this reading the Israelites are attacked in their journey from Egypt to Canaan by the Amalek tribe who would have annihilated them were it not for Moses's intercession with God.

The second reading is from the second letter of Paul to Timothy 3:14, 4:2. St. Paul continues to ex-

hort and encourage his disciple Timothy to be loyal to the Christian faith. Timothy must continue to

preach this "word," this faith, no matter what the obstacles may be.

The Gospel is from St. Luke 18:1-8. Our divine Lord teaches us, in this parable, the need for perseverance in prayer. This perseverance develops our trust and confidence in God. It helps us to become hum-ble and to realize how weak we are when left to ourselves. It keeps us close to God, as we learn how dependent we are on His generosity. Perseverance is the most desirable gift that we can hope for in this life. For this reason we must continually ask for perseverance by us-ing the means God gives us in order to obtain it: prayer, helping oth-

ers, frequenting the sacraments, associating with good companions, and hearing and reading Holy Scripture. It is perseverance that wins us the crown. Yet it is the most difficult of all the virtues because of the

weakness and inconstancy of the human spirit. (Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales.)

"Ask and you shall receive," not perhaps what you wanted, but what God knew you needed. "Seek and you shall find," not the easy way which you thought you deserved, but the harder way which would make you more deserving of heaven. "Knock and it shall be opened unto you," not the door you were standing at, which would have delayed or endangered your progress, but the door further down the street where refreshment and new cour-age to continue on your upward climb were awaiting you.

(Excerpted from The Sunday Readings Cycle C, Fr. Kevin O' Sullivan, O.F.M.)

Quieren estar juntos. Necesitan

DOMINGO XXIX DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO comunicarse.

! QUE EL SEÑOR LES BENDIGA!
