St. Michael the Archangel

Ask Sr. Rose Why does the Priest or Deacon add a

little water to the wine that will become the Precious Blood of Christ? The wine represents the Divinity

of Christ and the water the humanity of Christ. Remember,

Jesus is both God and Man.

Please guide and protect our Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency Personnel and First Responders

Reflection “Gratitude is not only the posture of praise, it is

also the basic element of real belief in God.” Sr. Joan Chittister, O.B.

A Prayer for Vocations to the

Priesthood Lord Jesus, you invite us to pray the Lord of the harvest

that He send labourers into His harvest.

Lord and God of all, call to the priesthood men on fire with your divine love, who will be the voice of the Good

Shepherd to the scattered sheep of the flock.

R. Lord of the harvest, send labourers into your harvest.

Lord and Saviour, bless us with holy priests. Through their ministry may your life-giving presence in the

sacraments be always present in your Church.

R. Lord of the harvest, send labourers into your harvest.

Lord and Giver of Life, raise up men filled with your power and with great missionary zeal, so that all who dwell

in darkness may come to live in the light of Christ.

R. Lord of the harvest, send labourers into your harvest.

(Pause for a silent personal prayer for vocations to the priesthood).

Lord Jesus, you called chosen men to be with you: to preach the good news of salvation and to have authority over the powers of darkness. Send your Holy Spirit upon the men you have chosen for the priestly ministry. May

they answer your call and follow you with generous hearts. Amen

St. Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs

Paul Miki, born into a rich family, was the son of a Japanese military leader. He was born at Tounucumada, Japan and educated at the Jesuit college of Anziquiama. He joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. Fearing their influence, the Jesuits became an object of persecution by the authorities. Miki was jailed along with other Christians. He and his Christian companions were forced to walk about 1,000 km (600 miles) from Kyoto as a punishment for the whole community. On the way they sang the Te Deum, the Church’s hymn of praise and thanksgiving. Finally they arrived at Nagasaki, the city which had the most conversions to Christianity. Paul, still a Jesuit scholastic [Jesuit in training] and aged 35, was crucified on February 5, 1597, along with 25 other Catholics. He preached his last sermon from the cross and it is maintained that, like his Master, he forgave his executioners, stating that he himself was a Japanese. Together with him died Santiago Kisai, also a Jesuit scholastic, and Diego Kisai (or Kizayemon), a Jesuit brother, in addition to 22 priests and lay people. This took place during the persecution of Christians under the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ruled Japan in the name of the emperor. Among the other Japanese who died were: Francis, a carpenter who was arrested while watching the executions and then crucified; Gabriel, the 19-year-old son of the Franciscans’ doorkeeper; Leo Kinuya, a 28-year-old carpenter from Miyako; Joachim Sakakibara, cook for the Franciscans at Osaka; Peter Sukejiro, sent by a Jesuit priest to help the prisoners and who was himself arrested; Cosmas Takeya from Owari, who had preached in Osaka; and Ventura from Miyako, who had been baptized by the Jesuits, gave up his faith on the death of his father, became a bonze, and was brought back to the Church by the Franciscans. All were canonized as the Martyrs of Japan by Pope Pius IX in 1862.

NY State Budget Bill S.7511/A.9511 - This year’s budget seeks to enact a multi-faced new “women’s agenda”. Part “B” of this legislation is a dangerous expansion of late-term abortion and a leap into legalized infanticide. It should never be part of a budget. Please contact your Senator – Terrence Murphy and your Assemblyman – Kevin Byrne to tell them to oppose it. You can also go on the internet to NYS Catholic Conference and send an action alert. It would expand late-term abortion. It would empower non-doctors to perform abortions. It would eliminate protections for pregnant women against coerced abortion or intentional assaults on their unborn child. It would legalize infanticide by repealing Public Health Law section 4164 part of which give full legal protection to any child who might (mistakenly) be born alive as a result of abortion. And it would increase the state’s abortion rate. Please pray that this section is taken out of the budget. For more info go to www.nyscatholic.org.

“I Am With You Always”: Eucharistic Adoration Seminar

Friday, February 16 7-8:30pm

Saint Joseph’s Seminary

Join noted author James Monti for a discussion of the ways in which Eucharistic adoration arises from the Mass and ultimately leads the worshiper back to the

Eucharistic celebration. Beginning with the Old Testament antecedents of Eucharistic worship, this seminar will explore the development of the rites of

Eucharistic exposition, benediction, and processions of the Blessed Sacrament in liturgical books from the eleventh century to today. The rites of Eucharistic

worship associated with the liturgies of Holy Thursday and the Feast of Corpus Christi and the customs of a Holy Hour, the Forty Hours Devotion, and perpetual

adoration will also be presented. Throughout the seminar, the pastoral and theological dimensions of these observances will be addressed, and answers will be

given to practical questions that can arise at the parish level. This seminar will be presented by James Monti, historian and author of In the

Presence of Our Lord and Praying In the Presence of Our Lord with the Saints Registration fee: $10

Church of St. John the Evangelist

Lent – A New Beginning

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our Lenten observance of Forty Days is an opportunity for all of us to deepen, renew, refresh, strengthen, and re-live our faith in Jesus Christ and His Church.

We all have areas of our lives that need healing, forgiveness, reconciliation, re-building, re-connecting, and mercy.

During this Lenten Journey a Cross will be placed near the sanctuary of the Church. You are invited to place before the Cross of Jesus Christ, your petitions, your burdens, your pain, your sorrow, your regrets, your forgiveness, your doubts, your will.

We are not alone during our spiritual journey through life, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, walks this journey with us.

Jesus Christ, Is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. “Behold, now is a very acceptable time; now is the day of salvation.” (Second Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 6:2).

Rev. Philip J. Caruso

SWEET as HONEY

J.D., if Jesus healed

broken hearts, did He start

Valentine’s Day?

Well, Honey, legend says, based

on his love for Jesus, St. Valentine

(269 AD) shared his belief and

love even from prison.

His faith healed the jail

keepers daughter from blindness, and he wrote letters of

encouragement signed, from your Valentine.

Valentine’s Day comes from love, and love is God’s commandment.
