New Honor for Mary, New Reminder for Us…

Pope Francis has added the Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church, to the Roman Calendar on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday. This means that each year, the prayers of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours on that day will honor Mary under the tle of “Mother of the Church.” The announcement came in a decree issued March 3, 2018, by the Congrega on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. It was signed by Cardinal Robert Sarah, its Prefect, on the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11, 2018. The original was wri en in La n. Below is part of a transla on into English of the decree, provided by the Va can, courtesy of Zenit.org (daily news bulle n for March 4, 2018).

Let us give thanks to God that the Holy Father has given this honor to Mary and this reminder to Chris ans that Mary is our Mother – Father Rudolph The joyous venera on given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in light of reflec on on the mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church.

In some ways this was already present in the mind of the Church from the premonitory words of Saint Augus ne and Saint Leo the Great. In fact the former says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the la er says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indica ng that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mys cal Body, which is the Church. These considera ons derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her in mate union in the work of the Redeemer, which culminated at the hour of the cross.

Indeed, the Mother standing beneath the cross (cf. Jn 19:25), accepted her Son’s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life eternal. She thus became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the cross handing on the Spirit. Christ, in turn, in the beloved disciple, chose all disciples as ministers of his love towards his Mother, entrus ng her to them so that they might welcome her with filial affec on.

As a caring guide to the emerging Church Mary had already begun her mission in the Upper Room, praying with the Apostles while awai ng the coming of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:14). In this sense, in the course of the centuries, Chris an piety has honored Mary with various tles, in many ways equivalent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and also as “Mother of the Church” as is used in the texts of spiritual authors as well as in the Magisterium of Popes Benedict XIV and Leo XIII.

Thus the founda on is clearly established by which Blessed Paul VI, on 21 November 1964, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Va can Council, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as “Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Chris an people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother” and established that “the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the en re Chris an people by this tenderest of tles”.

Therefore the Apostolic See on the occasion of the Holy Year of Reconcilia on (1975), proposed a vo ve Mass in honor of Beata Maria Ecclesiæ Mater, which was subsequently inserted into the Roman Missal. The Holy See also granted the faculty to add the invoca on of this tle in the Litany of Loreto (1980) and published other formularies in the Collec on of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1986). Some countries, dioceses and religious families who pe oned the Holy See were allowed to add this celebra on to their par cular calendars.

Having a en vely considered how greatly the promo on of this devo on might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety, Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday a er Pentecost and be now celebrated every year.

This celebra on will help us to remember that growth in the Chris an life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the obla on of Christ in the Eucharis c Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed, the Virgin who makes her offering to God.

Saint Eustochium of Padua

Eustochium was born in Padua, Italy in 1433. She had a rough start in life. Her mother was a nun who had strayed from the path of chas ty. She named her daughter Lucrezia and brought her up in the convent. When she grew up, she wanted to join the community. Most of the nuns opposed her admission, but the bishop approved it. Lucrezia took the name Eustochium in religion, a er a disciple of Saint Jerome. As soon as she began her novi ate, she began to manifest unusual behavior that included outbursts of dangerous temper alterna ng with gentleness, and cu ng herself with knives. This could have been mental illness, but at the

me many people thought it was due to demonic possession. As “treatment,” her fellow nuns ed her to a pillar for days and deprived her of food and drink. Despite this, she seemed to have recovered. Then the abbess became ill, and Eustochium was accused of having poisoned her by diabolical means. Rumors of what was happening reached the townspeople, who tried to storm the convent and have her burned as a witch. They failed, but the bishop seems to have believed the accusa on because he had her kept prisoner in a cell for three months, with nothing but a li le bread and water every other day. The abbess recovered, and Eustochium survived. The nuns tried to persuade her to leave the convent and marry, but she held firm to her voca on and stayed. Through her pa ence and devo on she gained the respect of her fellow nuns in the convent. The violent symptoms and self-mu la on she suffered from returned from me to

me, but with decreasing frequency. A er four years she was allowed to take her religious vows. Then her physical health declined. She couldn’t get out of bed, suffered great pain, and died on February 13, 1459. The name of Jesus was found carved on her chest. She was twenty-six years old. Appari ons and miracles were soon reported at her tomb. Three and a half years later her incorrupt body was moved to a place of greater honor. Saint Eustochium of Padua, pray for us! Eucharistic Adoration – Substitutes needed contact Betty Kreuter at 763-537-1399 or 763-354-4796 (cell)

or Therese Juba at 763-533-8514

We have each been gifted 168 hours a week. Would you please consider signing up to be a substitute for a committed Adorer? That is an hour, once in a while, when it is convenient for you, to come to the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel to visit with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. You would be taking the place of the committed Adorer for that hour. Substitutes are very important in this ministry. Most often people make a life-long commitment to being an Adorer. Illness, family emergencies, travel, etc. sometimes prohibit the Adorer from being able to come to the Chapel. That is when a substitute is called. If you feel you are able to participate in this way, as a substitute, please complete the form

found on tables in the back of the church, in the East Gathering Area or in the parish office. There are also forms on the counter in the Eucharistic Chapel entrance. Please place the completed form in the envelope on the sign-in counter of the Chapel, place it in the collection basket or turn it in at the Parish Office. Contact Barb about volunteering to be on the substitute list at 763-971-8460 or email [email protected]. There are urgent needs for committed Adorers: Sundays from noon to 1:00, Mondays from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Fridays 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Fridays 10:00-11:00 p.m. These hours could also be filled temporarily by substitutes. If you have questions regarding Adoration, or to make a commitment, please contact Betty or Therese at the above numbers.

We had the Hunger event on March 2-3, 2018. The Hunger is a very important event for our youth ministry. It is focused on fasting, prayer, and almsgiving—a perfect event during Lent! We participated in this event with Sacred Heart in Robbinsdale, St. Francis Xavier in Buffalo, and St. Bonaventure in Bloomington. It is a 24 hour fast that involves service projects, prayer, and fellowship. Prior to the Hunger, all participants sent out letters to family and friends in order to raise money for different mission projects. It always amazes me how ready our youth are to serve in whatever way they can. We are so thankful for all the teens that truly gave of themselves this weekend. We also want to thank anyone who may have donated to the Hunger—you are making a difference! God bless you! Anna Scherber, Youth Minister
