Prayers for the Sick

On October 13, 1917, our Lady worked a miracle which was witnessed by over 70,000 people in Fatima, Portugal. However, after giving a message to the three children and prior to the “miracle of the sun” our Lady appeared in three different man-ners, the last of which was as our Lady of Mount Carmel. As such, she held a Rosary in one hand and a brown scapular in the other. This apparition signaled something of what our Lady desires for us as we strive to grow spiritually. Today we will consider the brown scapular and next month we will consider the Rosary. The brown scapular is of great importance to all of us but, sadly, it has fallen into disuse in many places. There are many people who have never even heard of the brown scapular. The fact that our Lady would appear holding out the scapular to us, her children, shows us that she wants us to wear the blessed garment. What is it and where did it come from? The history of the brown scapular goes back to the middle of the thirteenth century when St. Simon Stock, who was then the General of the Carmelite Order was praying a Novena to the Mother of God for discernment and for help. The Carmelites were founded in the Holy Land, but difficulties forced them to Europe where they did not fit in very well. They had not received many vocations and the Order was dying out. St. Simon Stock composed a prayer that is known today as the Flos Carmeli or the Flower of Carmel. It was this prayer that he prayed for nine days seeking our Lady’s guidance. Beyond any expectations, our Blessed Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock in 1251 and presented him with the brown scapular. On a religious habit, the scapular is the piece of cloth that goes over the front and back of the habit. It is about 18 inches wide, it reaches nearly the bottom of the habit, and it serves to protect the habit. However, for those who do not wear a habit, the brown scapular was miniaturized so that it consists of two small square pieces of cloth connected by two strings. The cloth pieces are worn on the front and back. There are many things that can be said about the significance of the scapular. Fitting over both shoulders like a yoke, so it serves as a reminder of our Lord’s words about His yoke being light. It reminds us of our baptism in which we were clothed in Christ. Not only does it remind us of our baptism, but most especially our baptismal call to holiness. Seeing the scapular each morning and evening calls to mind for us that we are to be conformed to Jesus Christ. The scapular is also a sign of our Lady’s spiritual motherhood. As a mother clothes her children to keep them protected from the elements, so our Lady clothes her children to protect us from the cruel onslaughts of the evil one. So, it reminds us that we are children of Mary and members of Jesus Christ. All of this is wonderful, but the most important thing about the scapular is the promise that our Lady made regarding those who wear it. She said that anyone who dies wearing the scapular will not be subject to the fires of hell. What a fantastic promise! The scapular is not a good luck charm, but a vehicle used by Heaven to call us again and again to reject sin and to grow in holiness. For those who struggle with habitual sin, the scapular is also a sign of hope and consolation, giving knowledge that our Lady is praying for us, that she will obtain the grace to help us to overcome sin in our lives, that we are not condemned, despite our weakness, and that the mercy of God covers us like a garment. For those who wish to take things even further, the Church has extended what is known as the “Sabbatine Privilege.” Along with wearing the scapular, a person must engage in some fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays and pray the Little Office of our Lady each day (this can be substituted by the Rosary with the permission of a priest). For those who live this manner of life, there is a guarantee that they will be in Heaven by the Saturday after their death, thus Sabbatine or Saturday Privilege. Pope Pius X, in 1910, allowed that for people who had difficulty wearing the brown scapular due to allergies or danger due to the nature of their work, the scapular medal can be worn. While anyone can wear the scapular, even non-Catholics, one has to be enrolled in the scapular in order to wear the medal. It is good to be enrolled regardless (it only takes a couple of minutes), because once enrolled the person has a participation in the works of the Religious of Mount Carmel, and new scapulars can worn without them having to be blessed. I think our Lady revealed the scapular in a particular way at Fatima because of the times in which we are living. We are in a spiritual battle which is soon to escalate. The scapular serves as a shield to protect us from the darts of the enemy. It also reminds us that no matter how dark things seem, we have not been abandoned by our Lord and our Lady. Remember, this is our Lady’s time; she is the one leading the army of our Lord in this spiritual battle. She clothes us in her

uniform, she gives us a shield to protect us, and in the Rosary she gives us the weapon for our spiritual warfare. We not only

want to be protected on the day of battle, but we want to be sure we are on the right side. The scapular is a sign that we

belong to Jesus and Mary, that we reject the lies and empty promises of the devil, that we are living in this world with our

hearts focused on Heaven and we have a guarantee that after death we will be brought safely into eternal life.

Fr. Robert Altier

Saint of the Day – Saint Rosalia

Rosalia live in Sicily in the Twelfth Century. It is said that she was born near the city of Palermo to a noble family, who made sure that she received a thorough Christian education. At an early age she left home and went to live as a hermit in a cave near the town of San Stefano Quisqui-na. There is an inscription in this cave reading (in Latin) “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibaldus, Lord of Quisquina and Rosae, have decided to live in this cave for the love of my Lord Jesus Christ.” After some time, Rosalia moved back to the Palermo area and into a stalagmitic grotto on the slopes of Mount Pellegrino. She died there, and her remains were eventually covered up by the limestone deposits of the stalagmites. The people of Palermo immediately honored her as a saint, and within decades many churches and chapels were dedicated to her in Sicily and southern Italy. Many years later, in 1623, Rosalia appeared to a grief-stricken farmer who was had lost his wife to the plague and had come to Mount Pelegrino to commit suicide. The following year she also appeared to a woman who was herself a victim of the plague. Rosalia told her to make a pilgrimage to Mount Pelegrino. Following these apparitions, a search was made for her bones on that mountain. Various

relics were discovered, including what are thought to be her bones, a terracotta crucifix, a silver Greek cross and some prayer beads. Every September 4th in Palermo there is a fiesta in her honor, and there is a shrine to her on Mount Pelegrino which is still a place of pilgrimage. Saint Rosalia, pray for us!
