Church of St. William Lent 2020 February 26 to April 12 The 2020 Lenten season begins this Wednesday, February 26. During Lent we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to practice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self- discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God’s gifts—not only through the distribution of money but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysos- tom reminds us: “Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446). The 2020 Lenten season begins this Wednesday, February 26. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God’s gifts—not only through the distribution of money but through the sharing of our time and talents. Fast and Abstinence and Other Acts of Penance during Lent

The Bishops of the U.S. prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednes-day, February 26, on all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light.

All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to partici-pate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to under-take spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended.

All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

The new Spiritual Leader of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

We rejoice with Archbishop Nelson Perez and promise our prayers from the

St. William Parish Community for a successful ministry.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 23, 2020

FOCUS: Strive for perfection in love.

Jesus expands on the law that his followers knew well.

As God loves all people without partiality—the bad and

the good, the just and the unjust—so are all who follow

him to do. Certainly this can be difficult, but it is not

impossible. For by Christ’s sacrifice, we have been made

children of the Father. With his help, and God’s grace,

we are capable of striving for the perfection in love to

which we are called.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In Leviticus, the Lord

declares his statutes to Moses for the Israelites, calling

them to holiness and love. In our second reading, Paul

instructs the Corinthians, calling them to holiness as tem-

ples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel from Matthew,

Jesus preaches a new standard of love and justice, calling

his followers to love their enemies.

REFLECTION: We can see that Jesus is not interested

in half-hearted, or part-time disciples. We can’t be good

Christians only at home and when we gather at church.

There are no boundary lines for Christian love, because

God has not drawn boundaries around God’s love. God,

not the world, is the standard for our love. To love in

God’s way we will need to pray earnestly for help from

God.

So we ask ourselves:

Whom do you find the most difficult to love?

Have you thought about asking God to help you love

that person?

Caring for Friends Aid for Friends has a new name—Caring for Friends. This charity was started by one woman who saw a need and said yes. The concept of sharing food and friendship with those in need is so simple and intuitive. It has inspired over 100,000 volunteers to help tens of thousands over 45 years. Our mission was and is to provide food and friendship to homebound seniors and disabled, the homeless, and families in need. We encourage you to visit our website and see what we are working on and how you can help. CaringforFriends.org

¡Bienvenido a casa, Arzobispo Nelson J. Pérez!
