April 22, 2018Fourth Sunday of Easter (B)
Acts 4:8–12; 1 Jn 3:1–2; Jn 10:11–18At the center of his painting Hands of the Crucified,
Renato Guttuso (1912-1987) places the piercing reality ofpain represented by the hand of Jesus. The dark reds, blacks, and blues give way to the brightness of theoranges, yellows, and whites. This choice of palate ispurposeful. Death is depicted with the same palate as asunset, when darkness closes in on the light. But thennight gives way to the colors of the sunrise when new lifesprings forth. The brutal darkness that leads to his deathis replaced by the light-giving act of the love of God.
The Good Shepherd also shows the beauty of this love-filled sacrifice. This is why the Father loves Jesus;because he lays down his life for us. He has the power todo so and does it freely. This is because the Shepherdʼsmission and vocation is centered on the good of thesheep. They are the center of his daily cares andconcerns. Jesus tells us that you and I are the utter focusof his heart and life. You are worth it. It is a beautiful thingto be loved by someone. Imagine if this someone is Godhimself.
As modern as Guttusoʼs painting looks, the artist honorsa traditional symbol. Byzantine art often depicted theblood from Jesusʼ side falling into a chalice to connect thepassion of Jesus with the eucharistic sacrifice. The artistdoes the same by showing the blood falling into a simplechalice with a host at its center.

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word:
In the first reading, we hear Peter preaching about Jesus
again. He uses the line from Psalm 118 —”The stone
rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone”—
to describe Jesus. This becomes the refrain for the
psalm. We then hear from John in the second reading
and the Gospel, comforting us with the image of Jesus
as the Good Shepherd and us as the children of God.
Let us consider the richness of these images as we lis-
ten to them today.

The RCIA Process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process by which those interested in becoming a Roman Catholic Christian learn about our faith. Through interviews, classes and discussions, adults are prepared to accept the challenge of our baptism and encouraged to live the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. The RCIA process is also for those Catholics who have not been educated in our faith and have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion.
