Seeing your Life through the Lens of the Gospel

Jesus speaks of the established order falling apart, but the collapse of the old order opened the way for new

possibilities. Our church is in crisis, and the world is facing climate disaster. Where have you seen something

new and hopeful emerge in the midst of all this, e.g. some action arising from better eco awareness

(less waste, a community garden, et al)? The parable of the fig tree. Even in winter it begins to put forth leaves which give a hint of the fruit to come.

Where have you found signs of hope in a wintry situation – in your own life, in the life of some group, in the life of

the Church, in our world? Jesus proposes no clear time-scale for the events being foretold, so the final

sentence (v.32) is a call to alertness, to live the present to the full. What difference does it make to you

when you are able to live the present moment to the full?

The Christian vision

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Heaven and earth will pass away,

but my words will not pass away’. Every now and again

someone spreads the rumour of the end of the world. So far it

hasn’t taken place! We have something far more important than

the end of the world to make our preoccupation, namely the

wonderful presence of Christ with us and in us and around us.

As followers of Jesus we have a great responsibility to the world

we live in to witness to him by the way we live as his people in

spite of all the scandals and all the upheaval in the Church today.

We do this by the joy of God’s presence and love shining out

through us and we do it by the quality of life we develop in our

homes and in our parish community, a quality that is

characterised by kindness, gentleness, care, enthusiasm, peace,

hope, forgiveness Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The monthly outdoor collection for the Society of St Vincent DePaul

will take place after Masses next weekend.

A word from Fr Jim I am delighted to announce that the

Archbishop of Dublin Dr Dermot Farrell will be visiting here in Balally on Sunday 12th December

and will celebrate the 10am mass. Afterwards, there will be community Carol Singing and a chance to meet the new Archbishop in the Pastoral Centre.

Advent Christmas Proposal: (Timetable)

With the approach of Advent and Christmas, Fr Dermot and I would like to consult Parishioners on a proposed timetable.

We are interested in the opinion of all, particularly Parish Pastoral Council , Altar Society, Ministers of the

Word, Ministers of the Eucharist, Musicians and Stewards etc. We will have a short meeting in the Church on Monday

15th November at 7pm.

The annual Bethany Mass for the members of our community who have died since last November takes

place this Sunday at 10am Mass. The Mass is offered for all those from the Parish who

have died during the past 12 months.

Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful

departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

5th World Day of the Poor

The poor you will always have with you” (Mk 14:7).

Jesus spoke these words at a meal in Bethany, in the home of a certain Simon, known as the leper, a few days before

Passover. As the Evangelist recounts, a woman came in with an alabaster flask full of precious ointment and poured it over

Jesus’ head. This caused great amazement and gave rise to two different interpretations.

The first was indignation on the part of some of those present, including the disciples, who, considering the value of the

ointment – about 300 denarii, equivalent to the annual salary of a labourer – thought it should have been sold and the

proceeds given to the poor.

The second interpretation was that of Jesus, and it makes us appreciate the profound meaning of the woman’s act. He says,

“Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me” (Mk 14:6). Jesus knows that his death is

approaching, and he sees her act in anticipation of the anointing of his lifeless body prior to its placement in the tomb. This

was beyond anything the others present could imagine. Jesus was reminding them that he is the first of the poor, the

poorest of the poor, because he represents all of them .

conflict from your earliest days. Give the gift

of peace and hope to all who experience the

trauma of division in families, in communities

and among nations.

St. Laurence O’Toole, man of prayer,

you recognized the call to serve the Lord

in a particular way at Glendalough. Give the

gift of perseverance to all who are discerning

their Christian vocation at this time.

St. Laurence O’Toole, man of faith,

you had the openness to accept a position of

leadership in your community at an early age.

Bless our young people with a spirit of

generosity to offer themselves in the service of the Gospel.

Confirmations were held here in Balally, Tuesday 9th November For Queen of Angels national school.

Congratulations to Tammy with her mum Ade, Leah Burke and all the boys & girls from Queen of Angels

The Hospitality Group are back in town.

Everyone is happy to be back. Lots of laughter, chats and

Fun. We had a lovely surprise visit from Fr Peter and there

couldn't have been a warmer welcome

if it were Pope Francis himself .
