Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2018

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day:

Today we celebrate Father’s Day, honoring our fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, and all

those who have acted as fathers in our lives. How fortunate are we if we had or have a father who is like the majestic cedar described in the first reading, providing comfort and protection for all those in its care. Whatever our own cir-cumstances, we can look to God, our Almighty Father, as the ideal of a fostering, loving, forgiving parent.

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 17:22-24 Psalm 92

2 Corinthians 5:6-10 Mark 4:26-34

As we approach the first day of summer, we hear readings today that are set in nature. Ezekiel has a vision of God cut-ting a tender shoot from the top of a cedar and planting it on a lofty mountain where it grows into a majestic tree. Mark relates two of Jesus’ parables involving sowing seeds, one being the tiny mustard seed, which grows into a shady, hearty plant. As we listen to today’s readings, may the Lord’s word take root in us.
