Basilica Schola

The Basilica Schola is in session for the 2015-2016 season. We already have welcomed new members,

but hope you will join us too! We schedule informal "auditions" during the year for anyone interested in joining. It is a great way

to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition. Contact Joshua,

our Cantor: [email protected] to learn more. Hear our latest record-

ing, available on iTunes, and find out more about the music ministry at

http://oldcathedral.org/music-at-the-basilica.

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Music for the Holy Triduum Here is a brief overview of the music we will be singing over this most holy time of year. On Holy Thursday, we will hear the Ubi Caritas written by Maurice Duruflé (1902 – 1986), a French composer, organist, and teacher. In 1920 Duruflé entered the Conserva-toire de Paris, eventually graduating with first prizes in organ, harmony, piano accompaniment, and composition. In 1927, Louis Vierne nominated him as his assistant at Notre-Dame. Duruflé became titular organist of St. Étienne-du-Mont in Paris in 1929, a position he held for the rest of his life. The Mass Ordinary we sing, noted “for Holy Thursday”, was written by Giovanni Rovetta (1596-1668), an Italian Baroque composer and maestro di capella of St Mark’s Basilica, Venice between Monteverdi and Cavalli. The composer of the Christus factus est we sing worked in El Escorial, and was a confident of Philip II. Little is known of his back-ground, but the monk-musician was an accomplished organist and choirmaster before assuming his post under the powerful Haps-burg monarch: indeed, it has an imperial flair. On Good Friday, we sing the celebrated Allegri Miserere in its well-known form, with double choirs and high-Cs. Some of you have already heard my comments about that piece, so let’s turn to the Easter Vigil, the highlight of the liturgical year. The silence of Good Friday must be broken by the Deacon’s proclamation, “Light of Christ,” or Lu-men Christi, during the procession of the Paschal Candle, and the glorious chanted Exsultet. The organ maintains its silence until the Gloria is joyfully sung with great fanfare, during which the church’s bells are rung. As the major feast of the entire year, the choir sings psalms and motets that reflect Easter joy. Regina Coeli is one of the most refreshing, joyful pieces of music ever created, based on the Marian antiphon that is sung at the end of Night Prayer (Compline) during the Easter season. Gregor Aichinger was a 16th-century German organist-composer who studied in Italy and was also a priest. The refrain is an exuberant rondo in 3/4 time, while the verses are in common meter (4/4). The Easter Sunday liturgy has its own particular element: the sublime sequence Vic-timae paschali laudes. This treasure of Gregorian chant is one of three sequences that the church has perpetuated through the ages (there were many more in the past).

BAPTISM PREPARATION

If you are expecting a new baby or if she/he is already here, be sure to let us know. Then go to our website and acquaint

yourself with what to do next to be prepared for the renewal of your own baptismal vows and the baptism of your child.

Baptisms are not schedule during Lent. The next time for baptism is at the Easter Vigil, March 26th.

Next Session for parents and godparents is Monday, April 4 at 7:00pm.

During this Jubilee Year we are called to help one another and be merciful as Jesus is for all our sins. It is only with your help that the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal continues to be a beacon of hope for our brothers and sisters through ministries and charities.

Every year the Archdiocese sets a goal for each parish. This year the goal for the merged parish of St. Patrick's Old Cathe-dral and the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood is $47,000. Please pray over this and make a gift that will assist those in need around us. You can learn more about the Appeal at www.cardinalsappeal.org

At the Church of The Most Precious Blood Entrance at 113 Baxter or 109 Mulberry Street

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through them will benefit from indulgenc-es and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola. For those in a state of grace and fulfilling the other prescribed conditions, a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrim-age starting at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral where a Prayer of Mercy may be said. The pilgrim then may proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.
