From the Desk of Fr. John

I am truly grateful for the visit of Cardinal Dolan today to our parish as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. He is a worthy shepherd of our vast and diverse Archdiocese. Since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 he has become a good friend of the priests and people of New York. May he be blessed by every grace and know of our unfailing support as he continues his work among us to proclaim the “good news”. May the same transformative spirit that once propelled the Apostles into the streets of Judea bestow on him strength and grace.

I consider it providential to have been appointed pastor by Cardinal Dolan in 2013 of this great parish where people always respond generously to all that is asked of them. I am equally enamored by the dedication to prayer on the part of so many here and by the apostolic service that reaches people not only in our community but all over the map. Fortuitous also is that I should be your pastor for the 50th Anniversary. I’m filled with gratitude for your tremendous support and love every day. God bless you all for another 50 years and beyond…

Below, I’ve printed some capstones of the Cardinal’s life… God Bless…

Timeline

1964: Dolan entered Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary (now Kenrick–Glennon Seminary) in Shrewsbury, Missouri in 1964, and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Cardinal Glennon College. 1976: Dolan is also an alumnus of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Angelicum from which he earned the degree of Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1976. 1976: Dolan was ordained a priest by Edward O'Meara, later Archbishop of Indianapolis, then an Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis, on June 19, 1976. 2009: On February 23, 2009, Dolan was appointed the tenth Archbishop of New York by Pope Benedict XVI. 2009: Dolan received the pallium, a vestment worn by metropolitan bishops, from Pope Benedict XVI on June 29, in a ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica.

Just a reminder that there is still time to make your pledge and gift to the Cardinal’s Appeal for 2016. With everyone’s help, we can easily meet and surpass last year’s total of $45,000. The total represents that highest amount the parish has raised in the history of the Appeal. To date, we have raised just over $40,000. Additional envelopes are available at the Parish Office and at the doors of the Church. Let us show our support for the good and important work of the Cardinal and the Archdiocese of New York. As always, thanks for your generous giving and for all you do for the Church and our parish. God Bless.

The 50th Anniversary Souvenir History Book will be published in the fall to commemorate our Jubilee Year. It will include a full history of the parish researched and written by our resident historian, Mr. Jeff Canning. The book will also include pictures and stories about the Mass and visit of Cardinal Dolan. You can be part of the book by sharing your story about Holy Spirit and by placing a listing with your family name or business name. Forms for this purpose will be available throughout the summer at the Church, Rectory Office and on our website. All who place a listing will be reserved a complimentary copy of the book. Thanks to all who have already participated. Fr. John, along with the Finance Council will continue their discussion on bringing much needed lighting to the driveway as you enter our property. They are currently exploring the possibility of solar lighting to save on work, time and money. ----------------------------- Some dates coming up in the fall - As you may already know, Pope Francis has designated this year as the “Year of Mercy”. An opportunity to reflect more deeply on the Pope’s theme for the year, the Parish will be traveling to the Don Bosco Retreat House in Stony Point, New York on Saturday, September 17th for a day of Recollection. The day will include two conferences by the Salesian Priests at Don Bosco, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and lunch. The cost is $30.00.

In October, 2016, Fr. Francis Amodio of the Carmelite Order in Middletown, New York and our weekend associate will offer two lectures on the history and spirituality of the Carmelites. Exact dates are yet to be fixed. ----------------------------- Vacation Bible School - This amazing adventure will help kids begin to deepen their faith by exploring who Jesus is—the light of the world! At Cave Quest VBS, kids will explore the rock-solid foundation of Jesus’ love. Cave Quest is filled

with faith learning experiences kids see, hear, touch and event taste. Team-building games, cool Bible songs and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life, something we call God Sightings. Mark your calendars: the fun starts August 22 through 26. Call the Religious Education Office for more information.

Religious Education Registration - Is your child entering first grade in September? Do you have an older child who hasn’t recently attended Religious Education, or maybe never has? Please call the Religious Education Office with any questions you may have or to request a registration packet. Registration packets for the 2016/17 year will be mailed to families currently enrolled in the beginning of May.
