minimize the essential role of the Sunday Eucharist in the life of the Church. Fr. John J. Dietzen, Catholic Q & A

A Convert’s View “The day we were received into the Roman Catholic Church will always be remembered as one of the greatest days of my life: Pentecost, May 22, 1994. I can honestly say the thrill has not diminished. There hasn’t been a Sunday Mass yet when my wife Janet and I haven’t had tears in our eyes and lumps in our throats. Every Sunday it’s nearly impossible for me to get through that special line of the Nicene Creed dry-eyed, that is, that affirms our belief in ‘one, holy catholic and apostolic Church.’ Catholicism is the only thing that saves a man from the degrading slav-ery of being a child of his time. Janet & I happily rest in the sanity, peace, truth & salvation of the Catholic faith. We stand in visible unity & a most profound historical continuity with the Lord, the apostles, the Fathers, the martyrs, the saints & the whole glorious Catholic Church. Here I stand; I can do no other!” Stephen K. Ray, former Baptist and convert to the Catholic Church

An Easter Prayer For Greater Devotion Come, Lord, enter our hearts, passions, emotions & feelings. Reveal Your presence to us in our inmost being. As long as You remain absent from that intimate core of our experience, we will keep clinging to people, things or events to find our sense of belong-ing. Only when You really come, really touch us, set us ablaze with Your love - only then will we become free & let go of all false forms of belonging. May all Your children come to feel Your presence & be im-mersed in Your deep and healing love. Amen.

Wisdom From Our Catholic Tradition “A person must always be ready, for death comes when and where God wills it.” St. John Neumann, Bishop of

Philadelphia, 1811-1860

Prayer for Healing of Resentments Lord, you know both the wounds I carry and the grudges I nurse. Bring healing to my heart so I don’t have to endlessly revisit old pains and resentments. Help me to forgive, for my own peace of mind if nothing else. Remind me that when you forgive me, the past is released once and for all. May I let go of all the burdens of the past so I can live in joy today. Amen.

A Sin to Skip Mass? Is it still a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday? We have

relatives who go only when they feel like it. Their ex-

cuse is that there is no more sin since Vatican II.

I am sometimes tempted to believe that one of the big-gest mistakes of the Church was to make a “law” that we must go to Mass on Sunday. For too many Catholics, the obligation to participate in Mass each Sunday is in somewhat the same category of Church law as abstaining from meat on the Fridays of Lent, or even of attending Mass on holy days of obliga-tion. It obscures the significance of the Sunday Eucha-rist for Christians. To speak of the presence or absence of a Church regula-tion as a primary motive for participation in the Sunday Eucharist radically missed the point. In early Christian times, centuries before it was a Church “rule” participa-tion in the Eucharist each week was considered auto-matic. Assuming one was not ill, only two reasons could ex-plain an individual‘s routine absence. He had either decided not to be a Christian any more, or his knowledge of the faith was seriously deficient and more instruction was needed. Sunday Eucharist, in other words, constituted the life-breath of the Christian person and community.

Both the New Testament and earliest Christian writings point out this truth. (See, for example, Acts 20:7, “On the first day of the week, when we gathered for the breaking of the bread…”) The Church has realized in the past few generations that many Catholics lost touch with this essential Christian tradition, if indeed they were ever aware of it. To par-ticipate in the Sunday Eucharist because “I have to” may be understandable at certain stages of growing up. A Catholic adult at age 30 or 50 should nave moved beyond that. To answer your question, the law is still there and per-haps is still necessary for most, or all, of us to have the opportunity to grow to a fuller appreciation of this cen-tral element of our faith. The Code of Canon Law recalls our tradition: “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the Universal Church.” It then provides, “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in Mass” (canons 1246 & 1247). Vatican Council II did not, and had no intention to,

Dear friends, Happy Easter! We have learned in our Adult Bible Study that the reason we attend Mass on Sundays and not say, Tuesday, is all about Easter. Because Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, we are an Easter people! Every Sunday of the year is like a mini Easter! We had a great week preparing for today both physically and spiritually. I was going to thank all the individuals who helped in some way during Holy Week, but the list has over 40 people! From decorating to baking, from Sacristy prep to chang-ing the sign out front, our parish really rose to the occasion and worked together so that we could offer the many worship experiences this week. This is how ICC functions now- as a team with a com-mon goal: To provide a Catholic presence in Greene and try each day to support each other and be Christ hands and feet in the world! We have a Children’s Liturgy Team on Sundays, A Sacristy and Candle Team, a dedicated building and grounds committee, a Senior Citizens support group called Circle of Friends, a Knights of Columbus Men’s group, dedicated religious instruction teachers, Young Family and Youth events, and weekly opportunities for prayer and receiving the Eucharist. You may have heard the motto-Team work makes the dream work! I think our team work is definitely what makes ICC successful. Plans are underway for the Marion Memorial Garden. Make sure you check out the display in the vestibule. If you would like to contribute to this garden in memory of a loved one, there are special envelopes in the pews. The grounds on either side of the church have been worked on so that the drainage pipes are buried underground. It will be soon be ready for the garden foundation. If you are new to our parish, welcome! There are booklets in the vestibule with information about our parish life. Come be a part of ICC! Peace! ~Mary Wentlent
