Church of the Assumption December 14, 2014

A note from the Pastor Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

M y home parish in Italy – the place where I received my sacraments as a young boy – used to schedule several Masses on Sundays, all back-to-back. The reason was that the church was quite small while Mass attendance was very high. My brother and I would normally walk to church together on Sundays, while my parents (for a number of reasons) did not usually accompany us. We children got used to the idea that we had to go to Mass simply because we were getting ready for First Communion or Confirmation, or in order to know what was going on at the parish, where many activities were actually held for kids, even on Sunday afternoon. At Christmas, however, everything changed. Christmas Eve was the time of the year when we would go to Mass together as a family. After our evening meal, all would dress up and go to church for the Midnight Mass. The place was always packed. I remember all of us standing throughout the one-hour-long Mass (all seats had been occupied half an hour before we arrived), trying to find some comfortable spot within the crowd. That didn’t bother me a bit, though. Midnight Mass was always a special one, and not only because I would attend it with my whole family. Outside was darkness and cold. Inside, the place was filled with light, peace, and joy: the caroling and the way Mass was celebrated kept me awake and engaged; I felt as something really important was happening – something impactful, unusual, that had been made possible for me, for my personal sake. Here at Assumption we are keeping the tradition of celebrating Midnight Mass at … midnight! On Christmas Day we maintain the Sunday schedule, while on the Eve we also celebrate one Mass at 4:00 PM. Many consider this very 4:00 PM Mass as a “children” Mass: families come to church with their kids in the afternoon, then have supper, and next day enjoy the Christmas holiday by unwrapping their gifts. While it is convenient in many respects, nevertheless, the afternoon Christmas Eve Mass cannot provide the feelings that even little children experience during the Midnight Mass. Staying awake till Midnight and beyond, develops in all a sense of expectation and awe, the feeling that something mysterious is happening, of which we can personally participate. During the Midnight Mass, we bring Baby Jesus in procession, showing Him as the light that shines in the darkness. We also join our beautiful choir in the caroling that precedes the beginning of the solemn liturgy. We enter even more deeply into the mystery of the Incarnation, as we are reminded that Jesus wanted to be born in a total precarious condition, with no warm place to stay at, while outside it was cold and dark. Today I want to invite all – especially our younger families – to consider taking your children to the Christmas Midnight Mass. That’s a special occasion to transmit our faith to the next generations in a simple but powerful way, which will have an impact on all our little kids for the rest of their life. With my blessing, Fr. Paolo

FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE AAA...Archbishop’s Annual Appeal...Our Triple “AAA”, (AAA) goal is $48,815.00. As of now, we have re-ceived $ 29,515.00 in pledges, leaving our Archdiocesan as-sessed goal short by $ 19,300.00 Of that pledged amount, we have received $ 26,156.00. Our Church Community consists of 1758 families. Out of this total, only 161 families are partici-pating in the Triple “A”. The Church realizes the hardship peo-ple are enduring these days, but, the Church relies on your gen-erosity to meet our obligations. So, please be generous.

Online Giving Demonstrate your Thankfulness this Season

Each holiday season, Church of the Assumption anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our work now and throughout the year. If you need a convenient way to make recurring contribu-tions or plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to check out our electronic giving op-tions. As the pace of life speeds up around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to make con-tributions. To set up a recurring giving schedule, visit us online at www.assumption-emerson.org and locate the Online giving button. Or if it’s easier, complete a paper authorization form and return it to the church office. Thank you for your generos-ity and support. Online Giving Cards Many parishioners have signed up for our Online Giving program. Some of them have requested cards to be put into the Sunday’s collection basket in place of their cash donation. Cards are now available at the Rectory office for anyone interested in using them. Thank you for your continuous support. GIVE THANKS FOR RELIGIOUS Thank you! “We can certainly call you friends because of the way you care for our retired members,” writes a religious brother. Your gift to last week’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious benefits some 35,000 senior sisters, broth-ers, and religious order priests. May God bless you and your families for your generosity! DECORATING WITH STYLE Anyone interested in joining the parishioners who have so generously been decorating our Church for the Christmas sea-son, are welcome to join them on Saturday, December 20th at 9:00 a.m. to decorate the trees and put together the Nativity. The following week, on Wednesday, December 24th at 8:00 A.M. SHARP, they will be decorating the Church with the Poinsettia’s and adding any final touches. If you are an early riser, please think about joining them. All are welcome to help!! Remember many hands make light the work!!! ***Please note that starting January 2015, there will be no 6:00 PM Masses held the first Sunday of each month.***

JUBILEE EVENTS

Church of the Assumption

While planning an outdoor Carnival, the Jubilee Committee and Father Paolo have thought about running a smaller, indoor Carnival, on April 24th at the Parish Center. This Carnival will be geared towards our children, with Bounce Houses and Carnival games galore. We are in the planning stages and ask for Moms and Dads who would like to help out with ideas for what the children may like to do, to contact us with your ideas. We will also need Moms and Dads to lend a hand the day of the event. It will be open to anyone that wants to come regardless if they are Parishioners or not. Please contact Brian Beahm at 551-404-4965, or at [email protected]. Let’s give our kids something that they can help celebrate the Jubilee with. Bergen Catholic High School Honors Please congratulate the following Assumption Students in their achieving the Honor Roll during the First Marking period in the 2014-2015 Academic Year. Second Honors Carlo Camporeale Corey Russo Congratulations both of you for your continued success!!

December 14, 2014 JUBILEE MOMENTS….. BLESSINGS OF HOMES AND FAMILIES On the occasion of the Jubilee Year, the Church of the Assumption is introducing the Catholic Tradition of the Blessing of Homes and Families. If you are interested in Father Paolo, or Father Miles coming to your home to provide a House Blessing, please call the Rectory office at 201-262-1122, to schedule an appointment. CARNIVAL UPDATE: Our Parish is planning a Carnival this summer for Emerson and the neighboring towns. The dates are July 8th to July 12th. This event has potential to help provide substantial revenue for the Parish that is sorely needed. It also has the potential to bring our parishioners together. We will need many adult volunteers to help run this event. We have received excited responses from many of you, but we need more to ensure we have adequate coverage. If we have enough people, each person may only have to help out one evening or part of an evening. We do realize there are many other things in your lives that need attention, that is why we are giving all of you plenty of time to plan your schedule, so you might be able to help your Parish. Please contact Brian Beahm at 551-404-4965 or online at [email protected] and let me know if you are willing to help, or if you have any questions. We will try to accommodate any special needs you might require. As a Parish Family, we can come together and do this, while having fun!!!! INDOOR CARNIVAL FOR SPRING

Are you being called to Cornerstone? Why not take a break and treat yourself to the gift of Cor-nerstone? Our 7th Women’s Cornerstone retreat will happen here at Assumption on February 20th and 21st. This retreat is an opportunity for women to start, or renew a relationship with Christ. This 26 hour retreat is run by fellow women parishion-ers that have already made Cornerstone. We invite all women to give yourself this wonderful gift. Registration forms are in brochures located in the back of the church and in the Rectory. If you have any questions, please e-mail: [email protected], or call Nancy at 201-664-1424. Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day Today is often called Gaudete or “Rejoice” Sunday, be-cause the entrance antiphon begins with the word “Rejoice” and we are halfway through Advent-so much closer to Christ-mas. Today’s second reading also begins with “Rejoice.” On this Third Sunday of Advent, what do you have to rejoice about? How are your Advent preparations for Christmas going? Let us pray today for that extra boost of joy in this season of watchful waiting for the coming of the Lord. Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word Our reading from Isaiah today is the same passage that Jesus quotes at the beginning of his ministry in response to John the Baptist’s followers. Why is it here today? Traditionally, it lists the signs of the coming of the Messianic kingdom. Between this reading and the Gospel with John’s announcement of the coming of the Lord, the anticipation for the Lord’s arrival is mounting. Let us listen to God’s word today and rejoice. ANNUAL AFTER CHRISTMAS PARTY Our Annual After Christmas Party will be held on January 10th this year. It will be over in the Parish Center from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets went on sale last weekend, December 6th and can be purchased at all weekend Masses, or can be purchased at the Rectory during regular business hours. Last day of ticket purchases is January 5th. Tickets cost $ 35.00 per person/$ 65.00 per couple. This cost includes a gourmet buffet dinner, soft drinks, desert and coffee, DJ Music and dancing. Please feel free to bring any beverages you wish to make this evening an enjoyable event. This event is open to all adults, parishioner and non-parishioner, so invite your family and friends. We would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for orga-nizing this event for our Parish. Any questions, please call Brian Beahm at 551-404-4965 or e-mail at [email protected]. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS All men 18 years old and older wishing to join the Assumption Council # 5819 Knights of Columbus are welcome to call 201-225-1874, or check us out on our website at www.kofc5819.org to learn more about us.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT - “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16 - 18 This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations. JOY’N THE ADULT CHOIR The Adult Choir needs YOU. Please consider becoming a member. Rehearsals are Thursdays 7:30-9:00. We sing at the 10:00 a.m. Mass every Sunday between September & June. All voice types are welcome, NO experience is necessary. Call Dr. Richard Sorce, Director, at 201-887-6175, for more information, or just come to the Church (rear entrance) any Thursday evening. REMEMBER...It is through the generosity of our advertisers that we are able to place this bulletin into your hands without cost to the Parish. Why not get into the habit of looking through the ads and give these neighbors & merchants a chance to serve your needs. Tell them you read about them in the Assumption Parish Bulletin.
