CHURCH PROFILE CHRIST CHURCH ENDCLIFFE

INTRODUCTION Christ Church Endcliffe is an evangelical, Anglican Church in Sheffield. We are seeking to appoint an ordained Associate Minister to help us fulfil our vision to Glorify God as we Build Up the church family, Reach Out to the local community, and Send Out people to serve God in this country and beyond.

HISTORY We began in 2009 as a church plant from Christ Church Fulwood, with an initial team of 45 adults and 12 children. St Augustine’s, an existing parish church, invited us to come and share their building with them, and to start an afternoon congregation on Sundays. We have an ongoing positive relationship with St Augustine’s, but continue as two distinct churches.

Since that time the church has grown in size such that we now welcome an average of about 115 adults and 45 children each Sunday. Alongside this growth has come a high turnover of people –with many students, young adults and young families within the congregation, we have seen over 250 people join and leave the church over the past 8 years, the majority of whom have moved away from Sheffield.

The past couple of years have brought three changes:

First, we have moved to having two services each Sunday (at 3.30pm 6.00pm) – this decision was taken with the main aim of allowing for future growth, although it has also provided some benefits for our children’s teams, who now have the option of staying on for the second service.

Second, we have gone through the process of becoming a Bishop’s Mission Order (until now we have remained officially part of Christ Church Fulwood, even though in practice we were separate).

And third, our PCC has passed a resolution from the House of Bishop’s Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests, asking for alternative episcopal care in line with our complementarian position.

1 Peter 5:2-4

Be shepherds of God's f lock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are wil l ing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the f lock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you wil l receive the crown of g lory that wil l never fade away.

SETTING As a Bishop’s Mission Order, we have a particular focus on reaching out to the parish of St Augustine’s. In practice many of the church family, and the visitors we welcome, live outside the parish, though a good number live within easy walking distance.

Endcliffe is slightly to the south-west of Sheffield City Centre. The church building lies very close to a few places which help to put it “on the radar” of many people in Sheffield, and which help to give a flavour of the area:

• Ecclesall Road – one of the major roads which goes from Sheffield City Centre all the way out to the Peak District. This is lined with shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés.

• Endcliffe Park and the Botanical Gardens – Endcliffe Park has a café and play park, and is the venue for a lot of one-off community events during the year.

• Endcliffe Village – this is one of the major first year accommodation hubs for Sheffield University, housing over 3000 students.

The parish mostly consists of residential streets. Here there is a range from owner-occupied to rented / multiple occupancy housing, and also from relatively wealthy areas through to more average areas.

There are lots of schools in the local area, though at present none with which we have a clear link as a church (there is a Primary school which is linked to both our parish and a neighbouring parish, but St Augustine’s maintain this relationship). And among the families at church, we have children attending at least 5 different primary and 3 different secondary schools.

CHURCH LIFE Our vision as a church is to Glorify God as we Build Up, Reach Out, and Send Out. These aims shape all that we do as a church.

Church Family We believe very much that the gospel unites different people, and brings them together as one in Christ. We want to embody that as a local church. And so we celebrate the diversity among the church family, while also recognising that there are currently some limits to this:

• We have a spread of ages at church, from babies through to retired men and women. We have a particularly large number in their 20s and 30s.

• We have a good mix of single people, married couples and families. However, whilst we have a few couples with grown-up children, we do not have older families – as an example of this, all of our children are aged 13 and under.

• We have a slight socio-economic spread, but the church is predominantly middle-class – most (though not all) people have been to, or are at, university. Sheffield is a particular centre for teaching hospitals, and we have a large proportion of doctors.

• We have a range of nationalities and ethnicities (especially among our students), but we are predominantly white British.

Sundays On Sundays, we meet at 3.30pm and 6.00pm (with teams arriving early to set up). These services are basically the same, though with children’s work only happening at the earlier service, there are some differences in content. There is also a difference in size, with the 3.30pm averaging about 130 people (including 40 children) and the 6.00pm about 40. Our services are about 1h15mins long, and centre on the preaching of the word, with expository series being the mainstay of our teaching programme.

After the 3.30pm service we have a mealtime with food provided for all the children, and drinks and doughnuts for adults. After the 6.00pm service there is a cooked meal for everyone. There is a good culture of people staying on after the service.

Growth Groups We have 8 growth groups which meet during the week, and these play a major role in our “Building Up” ministry. Our growth groups are a place where people can know a smaller number of the church family more deeply, and help each other to live for Christ. Once a month we all come together instead for a church prayer meeting.

In lots of ways, growth group also serve together in the life of the church – for instance each Sunday a growth group will be assigned to “host”, whilst another will be helping with the catering that week.

Teams As a church, we are committed to every member ministry, and many people are already serving one or more ministry team within the life of the church, not to mention the many ways in which people serve more informally and outside of church.

Thus a key element of the ministry of our staff team is to “equip the saints for works of service” – encouraging and resourcing people to use their gifts to serve others.

Rather than describe all of the different ministries and midweek groups in this parish profile, we would recommend that you look at our church website, which gives fuller details of what goes on. It would also be good to read through our “Vision 2017” document from last November, and our Annual Church Report from April. They can be downloaded from the resources/booklets section.

STAFF TEAM The staff team has changed and grown in size over the past years.

Ed Pennington is our Senior Minister, and has been at Christ Church Endcliffe since it was first planted from Fulwood church.

Sarah Bradley joined the team in September 2015 as our part-time Children’s Minister.

Sammy Salter is our part-time administrator, and joined the team in July 2016.

From September we will also have two ministry trainees. Over the years we have generally averaged two trainee posts, though there have been one or three for some years.

Matthew Lawes, our former Assistant Minister, has moved this autumn to start ordination training at Oak Hill College, having been with us for five years.

BUILDINGS

St Augustine’s St Augustine’s Church is on Brocco Bank. It is a large late Victorian church. It has an entrance lobby with small side meeting room and toilets. Then what used to be the main body of the church has been divided into two, giving a hall (with a kitchen), and the main worship area (which seats up to 200). The hall is used by various community groups during the week.

On Sundays, we also rent the Scout Hut which is down a short passageway from the church building – our Children’s Church meets down there, while the hall is used for our crèche and pre-school group. The side room is used by a Pathfinder group.

Church Office Since we first started, we have always rented a separate church office. We have recently moved to a new office which is on Sharrowvale Road, about a 10 minute walk from the church building. This has space for all the staff team, and there is also space for hosting evening meetings (such as training courses, or Christianity Explored).

Housing As a church, we do not own any property. However, we would be committed to providing our Associate Minister with a house nearby. Once we have made an appointment, we can then discuss any requirements and find a suitable house.

APPLICATION PROCESS We hope that this gives a helpful picture of our church family and ministry. We are excited as we think of the future and what God will continue to do as he grows us in knowledge and love of Christ, and involves us in his plans and purposes. We are praying that the appointment of an Associate Minister will help to establish what we are, and enable us to grow into the future.

All diocesan vacancies use the standard application form which can be downloaded from the Sheffield Diocese website (http://www.sheffield.anglican.org/clergy-vacancies ).

Completed applications to: [email protected]

Closing date for applications – 5:00pm, Friday 20th October 2017

Interviews will take place on Thursday 23rd November 2017
