THE TEACHING CYCLE – YOU HAVEN’T TAUGHT IF THEY HAVEN’T LEARNED
STAGES OF SKILL INSTRUCTION
General Application – Static to Dynamic with gradual increases in speed and difficulty
Controlled Application – Gradual increase in physical and mental processing – using the skill and how to use the skill
Open Application – Pre-Competitive, Scrimmage and Competitive applications
CHAIR SKILLS, SPEED, AGILITY
In using drills for Intermediate and advanced speed and agility development, the coach needs to add a variety of variables into the training formula to develop more complex skill sets of athlete development. These variables include the addition of obstacles, timing, visualization, opponents, and teammates, verbal commands.
INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED AGILITY DRILLS Cone Boxes (vary starting positions) Cone circle Advanced obstacle courses (one person starting on each end, chase) Partner Tag Shadow Drills – 1X1, 2X2,3X3, 4X4, 5X5 Agility races or relays Partner Follow the leader w/cones Shark, twist shark, statue shark Dribble shark 1 hand shark
SPEED, AGILITY, CHAIR SKILLS WORKOUT
Sprints baseline to FT 5 sets of 5 (20 sec rest and 90 seconds between sets)
Lane Lines – 5 X 30 seconds w/ 30 second rest per Cone Course – 10 times – 1 minute rest per OR Cone Circle X
10 w/ 1 minute rest 1 X 1 (or more) Shadow 5 times down and back – 30 sec rest
at each end – change offense/defense at half-court
SKILL DEVELOPMENT - SHOOTING
Team shooting (spots, lay-ups) - # in a row or # of makes Spot Shot Knock Out or Spot Shot King Team or pair Plus/Minus Basketball Golf – 9 spots/par = 18 – Individual record/team record 10 Spot Shoot and Follow (1 pt/make or Timed with make at each 10 AND follow up) Timed shooting (23 minute shooting) Individual shooting – chair spots Spin Out Shooting 1 X 1 or 2 X 2 or 3 X 3 Partner shooting -1 minute shooting/catch and shoot Partner shooting w/ defense – read position for stops or fakes (fly-by’s) Passing (focus point) into big man Post Ups Big Man Bang
SHOOTING WORKOUT TRAINING SAMPLE Select 1 workout/day X 3 days/week Push between each spot- short explosive push from the baseline to free throw line 5 times then move on to next spot. We do this so we get use to
shooting while fatigued. Each shooting sessions starts with 20 attempted lay-ups from left and right Each shooting session is finished with 50 attempted free throws- you push baseline to free throw after every 5 shots again so we can get use to pushing
while fatigued. Catch and shoot, use a chair to practice sitting behind a screen or rub of the chair to get use to shooting off of the screen Record all results- we want to be shooting 75% from free thow line and 65% from the floor if not higher Work out one Shoot 20 makes from 7 spots then three sets of 20 from 3 pt. If you can’t make the distance from 3 pt then take one push in and shoot. 50 free throws
. Work out two 10 minute shooting drill- start at spot one, make a shot from that spot. Then move on to any other spot. You can’t shot from a spot that was directly next
to the last spot you shot at. You do this for 10 minutes and record how many shots you made all together. You want to be pushing at 80-90% of your max this is a fatigued shooting drill so it is game like. After this do another 10 minutes from three point range record total number of makes, if you can’t shoot threes take one push in and take YOUR game shots. Again after this 50 free throws push after every 5 free throw attempts.
Work out three 23 minute shooting drill- make 20 shots from each spot and rotate to next spot. Goal of this drill is obviously to finish with time left on the clock but
don’t rush your shots!! Take the shots within your own range. This drill helps with technique if you do not rush! Like always 50 free throws and push after every 5 free throw attempts
Workout four Make fifty shots anywhere inside the paint. Bigs move out to just outside the paint and post up make 15 shots from all 7 spots. Everyone else move out
1-2 chair lengths outside the paint and shoot rolling (short range game, think of this as shooting off of a pick and roll!) next sit under back and practice scoops left and right hand- make 20 on left and 20 on right.
Workout five Opposite hand lay ups! Still do your 20 lay ups from left and right to warm up. Make 30 overhand lay ups with your non dominant hand. Then make 25
scoop lay ups with you non dominant hand. Post ups using your non dominant hand make 25. Then take 50 shots from anywhere inside the paint using your dominant hand- finish as usual with your 50 free throws.
Shooting on the drive – Set up chairs or cones and take 50 shot/pass fake drive/layups around or through obstacles – visualize contact and defensive pressure. Record and work toward a 70% finish rate.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT – BALL HANDLING
Cone Course/Obstacle dribbling – Crossover/R hand/L Hand Bounce Stops (dominant/non-dominant) Shadow Bounce Stop/spin/Shadow Whistle drills Vary Starting positions w/ball on floor (or fold up chair) or different locations
– give verbal commands to start action Ball Fake/Head Fake/Chair Fake Dribble Dribble Knock Out 1 X 1 play 1 on 2 play
SKILL DEVELOPMENT - PASSING
Machine Gun passing Pass circle (monkey in the middle) 4X2 5 X 4 passing into offensive set 4 Corner Layups 3 Man, 4 man, 5 man Weave Weave into Numbers situations No dribble 3 on 2 offenses (3 on 3,5 on 5) Minnesota 22 Lay ups
CONCLUSION Intermediate and Advanced Skill training works on teaching the athlete in conditions
that begin to simulate game and game like situations. Adding variables like timing, decision making, defenses, teammates, pressure and visualization gradually puts the athlete into situations where they have to process information and make decisions along with the basic skills (which have already been mastered). Drills that focus on athlete development in Cognitive, Psychomotor and Affective domains are important in helping each athlete and each team reach ultimate potential. Add drills for specific reasons and closely monitor athlete and team development and success.
In Coaching for Long Term Athlete Development, the Coach must be able to filter the different variables to determine which, if any are having the most affect of athlete development and success and adjust the training program accordingly. Introducing a variety of variables slowly into the training process will allow the coach the opportunity to filter which variables affect each athlete differently and speed up or slow down training to insure athlete (and team) development and success. The use of assessment tools that provide accurate information and tools that will measure exactly what the coach wants to measure is key in the success and continued athlete development in the learning process.
