Coach's Corner June 2014 West Virginia University School of Dentistry I’ll begin with a tour of the dental school, but rather than a facilities tour, it will be a people’s tour beginning with the hubs of the school, the Deans office and Room 1055, because although facilities always help, it’s PEOPLE THAT MAKE EVERYTHING GREAT. DEAN DAVID FELTON (Bottom Right) Well, well, well………summer is here, the birds are singing, the fish are biting, and things are just a little less hectic at the NUMBER ONE DENTAL SCHOOL IN THE WORLD. I thought (I know unfortunately in my case, that is probably an oxymoron), it might be a good time to catch you up on all of the exciting things that are happening, and let you know what’s in store for the rest of 2014. It’s almost three years since Dave and his lovely wife Sue traveled some very winding country roads from North Carolina to arrive in ALMOST HEAVEN, West Virginia. Since arriving in Morgantown, the FIRST FAMILY, have traveled the globe to make sure everyone knows our school is EXTRAORDINARY. I would also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that the school will have a table at the GREENBRIER, so PLEASE stop by and see the Dean, Sue, Patty (Ryan), and myself, and we can personally tell you about the GREAT things happening at the school. MARTHA STURMS (Bottom Left) Martha is the right hand lady in the Dean’s office and has been there through the administrations of Dean’s Moore, Hornbrook, Koelbl, Veselicky, and now Dean Felton. Thank God Martha was only three when she began working here, so in thirty years the school can have a retirement party for me and Martha (by the way LAMB CHOPS WILL BE SERVED).

West Virginia University School of Dentistry

I’ll begin with a tour of the dental school, but rather than a facilities tour, it will be a people’s tour beginning with the hubs of the school, the Deans office and Room 1055, because although facilities always help, it’s PEOPLE THAT MAKE EVERYTHING GREAT.

DEAN DAVID FELTON (Bottom Right)

Well, well, well………summer is here, the birds are singing, the fish are biting, and things are just a little less hectic at the NUMBER ONE DENTAL SCHOOL IN THE WORLD.

MARTHA STURMS (Bottom Left)

Martha is the right hand lady in the Dean’s office and has been there through the administrations of Dean’s Moore, Hornbrook, Koelbl, Veselicky, and now Dean Felton. Thank God Martha was only three when she began working here, so in thirty years the school can have a retirement party for me and Martha (by the way LAMB CHOPS WILL BE SERVED).

PAULA RICE (Top Left-Page 1)

RANDY CHRISTOPHER (Top Right-Page 1)

Randy is the money man at the Dental School and his unenviable job is to manage the funds at the school. If any of you out there in MOUNTAINEER LAND have an extra BILLION dollars that you don’t know what to do with, please see Randy, and he the Dean and Patty Ryan (Director of Development) will even name the new dental school after you. Randy is also a huge MOUNTAINEER FAN and if I can teach him to cook (as if I know how to), he can serve on the TAILGATE COMMITTEE.

Paula is the money lady at the Dental School and besides her many financial talents, Paula is also the GREATEST TROUT FISHER-WOMAN of all time. Paula also has next to her desk a little piece of paper, which she adds a check mark every time I come to the Dean’s office, so if you are fortunate to meet Paula sometime, she MAY be willing to tell you the meaning of those CHECK MARKS.

ROOM 1055

I will talk about them as if they were ONE PERSON because every morning when you see one of them, you will probably see all four. GREATNESS in life, family, corporations, and ACADEMIA, happens because special people are committed to work together to make things better, not for themselves, but for every person around them, Sandie Sine, Carol Glover, Barbara Walters and Ceda Reed have served our dental school for a combined 120 years, yes,you heard me right 120 YEARS. The two most important words in the English Language or any language are THANK YOU, so if you see any of them, or communicate with them in any way, e-mail, face book or twitter, PLEASE, PLEASE thank them for their incredible service to OUR SCHOOL.

MARK RICHARD’S RETIREMENT

Have a GREAT SUMMER, look forward to seeing everyone at the GREENBRIER, and as always GOD BLESS YOU ALL and

LET GO MOUNTAINEERS. Coach

Last month I related to everyone that Bob Hornbrook has retired, and unfortunately, another retirement at the school occurred this month. Mark Richards, who has served the school in many capacities including Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, and the FOUND-ING and only Director of the Post Doctorate program in Prosthodontics which began in 1996, is leaving the MOUNTAIN STATE for sunny Tampa, Florida. Mark and his lovely wife Pam have been huge mountaineer fans, and fixtures at the Dental School tailgates so HOPEFULLY both will be back often to both visit the school and cheer on the MOUNTAINEERS.

Jerry Bouquot, Past Chair and Adjunct Professor of our School of Dentistry, was recently awarded the highest honor given by the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists. He received the HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP during the organization’s recent Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Bouquot is only the third American to receive this award since the organization started in 1976. Jerry will also be our featured speaker during our tour of the Mediterranean from June 28-July 5, 2015. For more information contact Jodi Murphy (610-399-4501) at www.cruiseand travel partners.com
