Colerne Parish Church Update Annual Parochial Church Meeting There are two things we want to share with you. The first is an invitation to the forthcoming Annual Parochial Church Meeting (basically our annual review of the life of your Parish Church). This year we are meeting in the Village Hall at 7.00pm on Tuesday, 3rd April, so please put the date in your diary/phone/calendar and come for a glass of wine and some nibbles and to hear what we’ve been up to. If you want to take part in the voting for your Church officials, then you will need to apply to join the Church Electoral Roll. There will be forms available in the Church or you can contact Nikki Morris, your Church Electoral Roll Officer ([email protected]) and she will send you one. We’re also putting together our Annual Church Report, so look out for copies at the back of the Church. We hope it provides a glimpse of all the different things we do to serve the community here and share the Good News of Jesus. Prayer for Colerne The second thing we want to share is that Prayer for Colerne our monthly hour of prayer for all the people, groups, businesses and organisations in Colerne is moving from Monday to the first Tuesday of every month. We will keep you posted about time and place via the Community Facebook Page or please let Karen Brzezicki have your email address ([email protected]) and she will send you reminders. We’re also glad to receive your prayer requests so keep them coming. Thank you all for your support. You know where to find us every Sunday and Thursday.
Revd Dr Janet Anderson-MacKenzie and the Parochial Church Council (PCC)

Grounds for Optimism – Chapter IX Midday Wednesday, 25th January 2017 – on road from Kashoja to Kyaka, N-W Tanzania
A level, broad, well-engineered road through open wooded country allows ‘ponder time’. When it is accredited by the Government, will KARUCO Agricultural University be able to attract students of ability and commitment? Away from the attraction of towns, cities and jobs in cool offices, budding agriculturalists will have many dusty hours of study in the sun. But, with rapidly growing populations, this is an area of commerce, innovation and entrepreneurship that black African countries must make succeed to achieve food security and self-reliance. Drought and global warming are here already. Grounds for Optimism? “Yes” with Africa’s resourceful, resilient young populace but plenty of “Maybe” causes for concern if we STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) educators cannot make our subjects and careers attractive. A couple of hours from KARUCO, we reached Kyaka. Here the road West from Lake Victoria turns North, crosses the Kagera River and heads over the border into Uganda towards its capital, Kampala. I have crossed this river here or seen the crossing many times. In 1967, I crossed it on the raft bridge attached to cables. Unlike the Sandbanks ferry across the mouth of Poole Harbour, it was powered by barefoot Tanzanian navy sailors, walking along the metal ropes before they returned to the ooze. A few years later in 1970, I watched the new bridge – a UK aid grant to Tanzania – being riveted together by international
engineering firm Sterling Astaldi’s Italian workers. Steel plate had been cut to shape by Dorman Long in Middlesborough. I remember cadging some lumps of coke from the brazier for heating
rivets and taking them back to show my students who thought coke was a narcotic or carbonated drink. Shortly after this bridge was opened, a phoney war of words, skirmishes and jibes started between Nyerere and Idi Amin. ‘The Last King of Scotland’, portrayed by us as a buffoon, was claiming a large fertile slice of Tanzania between the 1° S border and the river. Our students in Bukoba, barely 50km from the bridge, dug slit trenches around the campus. They replied “We’re digging our graves!” when I asked what they were doing. In 1977, five years after my contract was over, I was back in England. Then the real war kicked off between these two African countries. Amin’s drunken, drugged murderers, their only stiffening being Gaddafi’s Libyan troops, made some advances, took the bridge, blew it up, but forgot they would need it to get back home! Nyerere’s well-disciplined army, even the generals, marched and pedalled steadily into Uganda and retook the ‘Kagera Salient’ in the world’s last war fought entirely without motorised personnel transport. 40 years on there are two pieces of evidence of this conflict. Stumps of the first bridge’s piers show above the water upstream from its smart tar-sealed replacement; the west end of the shelled church, now home to goats and marabou storks, is left as a reminder of this destructive little war. Nyerere put his political soul-mate Milton Obote back on the Ugandan presidential throne but as many died under Obote’s second try at presidency as under Amin. Winning the peace is never easy. Now the hour’s onward drive to Bukoba is easy. Children in white shirts or blouses are walking home from school. Boys wear khaki kaptura (shorts), girls long tough blue skirts. Muslim girls in head scarves are clearly best mates with their non-Muslim peers. The broad, tar-sealed road has wide grass verges, cropped short by goats and cattle. A few lucky schoolchildren have bicycles, others walk. No childhood obesity here. Rodney Priest

A Transalp Trek – September 2017 – Part I In the early 1980s, during a hiking trip in the German Alps, I talked to two German walkers over an evening meal in a mountain hut. They were walking the ‘E5 European Long Distance Hiking Trail’ from Oberstdorf in Germany, across Austria to Bolzano in Northern Italy. A traverse of the Alps from north to south – what an adventure! In the mid 1990s, I was able to walk the E5 for myself and, almost two decades later, in 2013, I asked my sons James and Ben whether they would like to do the E5 with me; to my delight they said yes. Ben was a seasoned alpine walker but James had not been to the Alps, so a taster session seemed appropriate. We had a super trip to the Allgäu Alps in 2014, opening the way to the planning and preparations for the E5 itself. We were to be joined in our trek by my Godson Tom from Canada and a friend, Paul, who lives in Wales. With all preparations complete, in late summer 2017 four of us flew from Bristol to Mu-nich, with Tom meeting us there direct from Canada. The walk took us from Oberstdorf in the Allgäu Alps in Germany into the Lechtal Alps in Austria and on to the Inn Valley, before passing west of the Stubai Alps and into the Ötztal Alps. We then crossed into Italy and on to the Sarntaler Alps before finally finishing at Bolzano, Italy, just before the start of the Dolomites.
19 Colerne Parish Magazine, March 2018 19
Solely on the route, we walked 100 miles and climbed about 24,000ft and descended another 26,000ft. While the average daily walking distances were not particularly long, the height ascended and descended and the nature of the terrain to be crossed were the most significant factors affecting the effort expended and time taken. In addition, we carried everything we needed for the entire trip and our rucksacks weighed in at around 20–22lbs apiece.
It was a magnificent expedition. The mountains threw everything at us in terms of weather and terrain that they could, reminding us forcefully who was boss. However, despite their severity they were always strikingly majestic and often beautiful beyond description. We stayed in huts of the German, Austrian or Italian Alpine Clubs in the mountains and small hotels in the valleys. We enjoyed their sanctuary and some of the huts even had hot water. Fortunately, the food was always hot and the beer always cool. Brown bread and jam, Wiener Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarren (a form of fluffy pancake with raisins, apple compote and icing sugar) became our staple diet, and we craved salad and vegetables. In the huts, mixed-sex, six-person rooms, and dormitories of up to 40 people were the norm. We walked up and down gorges, alongside babbling brooks and raging torrents. We passed a huge, thundering waterfall in a deep gorge and, lower down the valley, we crossed the river via the longest, steel-rope footbridge in Austria, spanning 200m and suspended 105m above the valley floor. At only 1.2m wide and despite fasteners, it swayed sufficiently to match (in our imaginations) anything that Indiana Jones might have crossed.
To be concluded next month

Reflections In Reflections for February, I described the rise of the British Union of Fascists under its leader Sir Oswald Mosley. The 1930s constituted a turbulent time for Europe, mainly because of the rise of Communism and Fascism, but the economic depression caused by the Wall Street Crash of 1929 also played a significant part. In 1936 the Spanish Civil War started and raged until 1939. The Government side was assisted by Soviet aircraft and political activists and by volunteers, some British. The insurgents, led by General Franco, received the assistance of Italian and German troops and aircraft. The war was won by the insurgency and led to the installation of another Fascist regime led by General Franco. During the Second World War, Mosley and his wife Lady Diana were not imprisoned until 1940 when the BUF was also at last outlawed by the Churchill government. They were released in 1943 and, politically discredited by their association with Fascism, they moved abroad in 1951, spending most of the remainder of their lives in Paris. Mosley stood for Parliament twice in the post-war era, achieving very little support. The Cliveden Set was, in the 1930s, an upper class group of prominent individuals politically influential in pre-Second World War Britain. They were in the circle of Nancy, Lady Astor, American-born wife of Viscount Astor. Cliveden was the name of the house in Buckinghamshire which was then Lord and Lady Astor’s country residence. The ‘Cliveden Set’ name was coined by Claud Cockburn in his journalism for the Communist newspaper The Week. It has been accepted that this aristocratic Germanophile social network was in favour of friendly relations with Nazi Germany and influenced the policy of appeasement adopted by the government of Neville Chamberlain. In October 1937, after his abdication as Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor accompanied by the Duchess visited Germany against the advice of the British government, and met Adolf Hitler at his Berghof retreat in Bavaria. The visit was much publicised by the German media. During the visit the Duke gave Nazi salutes. It was widely believed that Edward favoured German Fascism as a bulwark against Communism; some thought that he even initially favoured an alliance with Germany. The Duke of Windsor himself said that his experience of “the unending scenes of horror” during the First World War led him to support appeasement. Hitler considered Edward to be friendly towards Nazi Germany and thought that Anglo-German relations could have been improved through Edward if it were not for the abdication. Albert Speer quoted Hitler directly: “I am certain through him permanent friendly relations could have been achieved. If he had stayed, everything would have been different. His abdication was a severe loss for us”. When one examines the political scene in Britain in the 1930s, one is struck by the enormous influence the First World War had on British government policy. David Lloyd George, who was the Prime Minister at the end of that war stated that it had been ‘the war to end all wars’. Subsequent prime ministers really wanted to believe this statement; none more so than Neville Chamberlain. There was a strong belief in the country that if Britain embarked on another European-wide war we should be breaking faith with the million war-dead of Britain, the Commonwealth and Empire. Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement was rooted on this premise. In Chamberlain’s wartime government were some who appeared more intent in opposing the Soviet Union than Nazi Germany and during the so-called ‘Phoney War’ period they supported sending

The RAF was prevented from dropping anything other than propaganda leaflets on German soil until Winston Churchill became Prime Minister. The film Darkest Hour depicts reasonably accurately the struggle that Churchill had with his cabinet when he was first appointed as Prime Minister in 1940. Many in the government wished to seek an accommodation with Hitler. In a series of inspired speeches, Churchill was able to rally our country to confronting the Fascist tyranny. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of August 1939 was a great blow to Britain and France. It seemed to indicate that Hitler would be given a free hand in Europe. Poland was invaded by Germany a few days later and the Soviets joined in the occupation of that country. This led to declarations of war by both Britain and France against Germany. Everything changed on 22nd June 1941, when the German war machine invaded the Soviet Union. Churchill immediately became the de facto ally of Joseph Stalin. This situation highlighted the paradox confronting first Britain and, after Pearl Harbour, the United States, that in order to defeat one or other of the totalitarian powers of Europe, an alliance with the other power had to be undertaken. The decision of first Churchill and then of President Roosevelt to give all assistance possible to the Soviets was the right one at the time. It led to the long years of the Cold War after 1945, but the Communist regime eventually collapsed during the 1980s. John Crittenden
The weather was very kind for the February Tramp and 30 eager Trampers headed off to Westwood Farm. There is no map this time as the route did not follow public footpaths. Most noticeable on this walk, compared with say 10 years ago, is the land management of scrub clearance, tree planting, fencing, and kissing gate installation, that shows care and respect for the land. I remember earlier times, when I was able to walk there, that the paths, especially through the woods were barely passable and un-walkable by a large party. Further, most noticeable now, there are wild flowers that are reappearing. In general our land management is so important especially as it is now under pressure from house building; I am apprehensive that our wildlife will suffer catastrophically which may result in the extinction of some species. A typical example is our bird population, where are the cuckoos? Heavens, what an old grump I am becoming! On a different tack now, and I ask all serious walkers to carry a pair of secateurs of the foldable pocket type that are easily purchased online for less than £10. This means that as the spring comes along and the growth rate of briars accelerates they can be cut back before becoming a real hazard. A snip in time saves nine or something like that. If, when you are out walking you discover that there is a problem with a path or stile, let me know so I can organise remedial work. The Trampers enjoyed their spring-like sunshine walk and, although there were places where the going was steep causing a bit of puffing, they all enjoyed their natter nosh and noggin in the Fox to recover. Our next Tramp will be on 6th March. Each Tramp is different and we always walk at an enjoyable pace, starting and finishing at the Fox; the departure time is 10.00am. Sensible attire and a mid-walk ‘munchie’ are essential

And the Oscar goes to…. By the time you read this you’ll probably know who are the main winners of Oscars, that is if you’re at all interested in this incredibly overblown celebration. On a personal note, I thought the most engaging part of last year’s event was when a large global accounting firm, charged with guarding the security and secrecy of the winning envelopes, managed to hand the wrong one to the presenters. For me the other interesting element of the Oscars is the number of winning films I can remember a month later and, in particular, any memorable, quotable lines that come out of any of the films. I suppose this year there is a chance that there will be lines to remember, mostly because one of the films in contention is about Winston Churchill, Darkest Hour, in 1940 when it looked as though we were losing the Second World War. I saw a survey recently of the most popular quotable lines from films and TV shows and it turns out that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back” from Terminator tops the list. Also, further down the list is Arnie again with “Hasta la vista, baby” from Terminator 2: Judgement Day. I must confess to having seen neither of these films. Perhaps more recognisable to those of us of a certain age are “Houston, we have a problem” from Apollo 13; “ET phone home”, and my favourite “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” from Gone with the Wind. I’m still waiting for the right moment to use that one – and get away with it! At LINK, the most quotable phrase from many of our clients is “I don’t know what I’d do without LINK”. It’s the phrase that gives us the satisfaction of knowing that we’re truly a ‘Good Neighbour’ service. Could you be a Good Neighbour? Call us on 07970 617617 Thanks Steve Drew

This is the last month when we support USPG who are working hard with a new project: ‘Let My People Go’. As we enter the season of Lent, traditionally a period of penitence and fasting, many of us observe the season by denying ourselves a
luxury, such as chocolate, wine or coffee. Sadly, fasting is not a seasonal choice for many people in the world, but a way of life. In some of the tribal regions of the Punjab, North India, thousands of people are caught up in the drudgery of bonded labour. They work long hours for next to nothing and have no luxuries to give up. These are India’s Dalit and tribal peoples – the so-called untouchables – and they face severe hardship due to extreme poverty. Opportunities for employment and education are scarce and the places they live are prone to flooding and drought, which are becoming more frequent. Many fall victim to unscrupulous landlords, businessmen and money-lenders. As a result, whole communities have fallen into debt slavery, often working in appalling conditions as farm labourers, domestic helpers or brick kiln labourers. One USPG partnership is with the Church of North India, reaching out to these communities through the Let My People Go programme, which is focused on releasing vulnerable families from the soul-destroying plight of bonded labour. Let My People Go provides training in income generation initiatives that are helping people to find a new life free of debt. A display can be found at the back of Church and the Charity Stall at the next Saturday Market will be in aid of this.
Charity for the Month
Keep a lookout for Older People Older People are easy to spot at sporting events – during the playing of the National Anthem, Older People remove their caps, cover their hearts, stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Older People remember World War II, Pearl Harbour, Guadalcanal, Normandy, and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50-plus peacekeeping missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Older Person on the pavement, they will apologise. If you pass an Older Person on the street, they will nod or tip their hat. Older People trust strangers and are courteous to women and treat them with great respect. Older People hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Older People get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children, and they don’t like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Older People have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it’s about their children, grandchildren or their animals. It’s the Older People who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Older People with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values. And we need them now more than ever. I was taught to respect my elders. The problem is, it’s just getting harder to find them!
