New York had the smallest pay gap between men and women in the nation, a new report found. Women working full time in New York earned 89 cents on the dollar compared to men, a pay gap of 11 cents, placing them first out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report from the American Association of University Women, a Washington D.C. group that promotes gender equality, comes in ad-vance of Equal Pay Day on Tuesday that aims to fight the gender pay gap. The group wants to end the pay gap by 2030. “Women in New York — and all over the country — are sick of unequal pay,” said Kim Churches, the group's CEO, in a statement. “That’s why we’re issuing an expiration date on pay inequity. Pay inequity harms our families and employers, while also robbing our economy of billions of dollars." The group said that women on average earn 80 cents on the dollar compared to men in the U.S. Over the past 20 years, it said, the gap has closed by a mere 7 cents — with greater disparities among among Latinas and black women. But New York fared the best in the nation with the lowest gap, while some states had a much larger inequity. The biggest gap was 30 cents between men and women in Louisiana and Utah. In New York, men were paid on average $53,124 in 2016, while wom-en average $47,358, the group said based on data from the U.S. Cen-sus Bureau.

That was a slightly smaller gap than California and Florida, which ranked second and third, respectively. The national average pay was $51,640 for men and $41,554 for women. ALBANY - Steps taken in New York to close the gender pay gap ap-pear to be paying off — literally. . New York has taken a number of steps in recent years to address the issue. New York is one of 41 states that prohibit employers from discrimi-nating or retaliating against a worker for taking legal action to se-cure equal pay. And New York is one of 19 states where employers can't take action against a worker for discussing or disclosing wages. Last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned state agencies from evaluating candidates based on their prior salary or asking their wage history. It also requires state contractors to disclose data on the gender, race and ethnicity of employees. New York is also considering a bill to prohibit employers from basing future pay on an employee's past wages -- a law already in effect in New York City. Cuomo, a Democrat seeking a third term in November, also has pro-posed a series of other steps this year as part of his Women's Agen-da. In a statement, Cuomo said his administration has fought to raise wages -- including a law that will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour in downstate New York. In 2015, he shepherded through the Legislature a Women’s Equality Agenda that included laws on pay equity and a new paid family leave program ‘While I’m proud that New York has achieved the lowest pay gap in the nation, we will not stop until it is eliminated once and for all," Cuomo said. https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/politics/albany/2018/04/09/how-new-york-leading-u-s-closing-gender-pay-gap/498808002/
