Archdiocese of Chicago Annual Appeal 2017

Love Your Neighbor As Yourself

——————————————-

Arquediócesis de Chicago Campaña Catolica Annual 2017

Ama a Tu Prójimo Como a Ti Mismo

Please spend some me this week reflec ng on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received in last week’s bulle n. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-

me special collec on. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gi payable in installments. The ACA theme, “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself,” was selected to remind us that our contribu ons to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our parish, our Archdiocese, and throughout the world. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes par cipate in the campaign and the gi s of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. A er our parish goal of $17,456 is reached in cash, 100% of any addi onal funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had me to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful considera on and generous response.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 12, 2017 Page Three

No había ningún lector, cantor o diá-cono.

Reading vs. Listening at Mass When I was growing up the priest said the Mass silently. It did not ma er because it was in La n and no one could understand what he was saying. There was no lector, cantor or deacon. The best way to par cipate was to read an English transla on of what he was saying. People had had a hardcover missal or paper missale e with English in one column and La n in the other, complete with pictures of where the priest was standing, so you could make a reasonable guess of where he was in reci ng his prayers. You read what he was reading and subvocalized his prayers. It was not very sa sfying, and many gave up and simply said the rosary instead of trying to follow the Mass. I remember how thrilled I was when all this changed in 1964. Mass was prayed in our own language. It was said aloud. We had lectors. We sang popular hymns. We all par cipated ac vely for the first me. However, many people could not break their old habit. They were so used to reading the Mass, they con nued to do so, even though it was now audible and intelligible for the first me. Even today many people read the Scripture pericopes while the lectors and deacons proclaim them. Some want to read and s ll subvocalize what the priest is proclaiming in his prayers. Old habits die hard. Of course, if someone has a hearing impairment, or the sound system is not working right, it makes sense to read what they cannot hear. But if you can hear okay, I would suggest ignore turning to the page where the readings are, and try listening instead. We are not given a wri en script when we watch a movie or listen to a television broadcast. When we read a text, we engage the analy cal part of our brain. This is good if intellectual comprehension was our goal. But in liturgy it serves us be er to engage the imagina ve part of our brain which enables us to hear and see much deeper than just the printed word. This is what is suppose happen in worship. I would like to suggest you try listening without reading the texts. You may see the forest instead of the trees. You may hear the song instead of just hearing the notes. You may find yourself much more engaged in our worship.

Resource Room Lent is just around the corner and the Resource Room has something for everyone who wants to make Lent special this year. We have Li le Black Books for $1—these books have six-minute reflec ons for every day from Ash Wednesday un l Easter. This book provides the framework for you to enjoy “lec o divina” (sacred prayer) as Fr. Edgar discussed in his bulle n ar cle last week. This six-minute program starts on Sunday, February 26th, which gives you three days to get ready for Lent! Get your Li le Black Book while the supply lasts! Come check out our supply of rosaries for sale or just check out a book to read during Lent. Did you know that Candlemas Day takes place 40 days a er the birth of Jesus? This feast celebrates the presenta on of Jesus at the temple. This year, it was celebrated on February 2nd and it is customary to bless candles for the home at this me. The Resource Room has boxes of candles used for prayer in the home for $3/box. These candles can be blessed by the priest and brought home to be used throughout the year for religious celebra ons, sick room visita on and as sacramentals during me of hardship, danger and for Divine guidance.

What is Missionary Spirit? In 2013 our Missionary Spirit Team grew out the Parish Transforma on process. We were reminded that by virtue of our Bap sm and Confirma on we are all called to be missionaries, whether that be where we live, where we worship or where we work. We are called to reach out, as Jesus did, to help the poor, the sick and the sinner. The Missionary Spirit Team works to find service opportuni es for our parishioners. Our goal is to give all parishioners an opportunity every month to serve someone in need. We look for opportuni es to serve those in our parish, our local community and beyond. We have helped the hungry and the ill; our parish and our environment; children and the elderly. St. Barbara's Missionary Spirit Team is planning some great service opportuni es for 2017! We hope there is something on the calendar that catches your a en on and gets you thinking about how you can help. More details will be posted in the bulle n as each event approaches. If you'd like to get an e-mail update about service projects (this is a great idea for families with Confirma on candidates!), contact us at [email protected]. See website for monthly events.
