Inside, the team fearlessly eli minated extraneous moldings , b

beams , fussy hardware , elaborate wood pa neling, ornately m illed

grand staircase were replaced with simpler versions to give it a

Then the coup le got even m ore daring. "They w anted ho ned concrete

floors, b ut t he oak boards they were replacing were n' t th ick enough to

provide th e depth we needed to pour them; notes Saydaks. Instead, he

suggested terrazzo with gray granite chips an d gray epoxy to achieve

the monochromatic e ffect the clients desired. "But it was still too shiny

for th em, so w e ha d It refinished an d buffed three ti mes to make it as

ma tt e as possib le ; says Shiff.

To change th e ho m e's once traditi onal street -side appeara.nce from

stra ight and tall t o low and lithe, Beynssens widened th e fro n t walk;

added a stucco retainin g wall to create a terra ce that echoes the roofli ne

an d emphasizes th e home 's wid th; and pla nted th e lawn with triangles

of blue oat grass an d chedcerboard cubes of aisply cUppedboxwood.
