Throughout the year, we achieved great patient satisfaction scores in numerous areas, received all-time high employee engagement participation and a record overall employee engagement grand mean score. We have been notified that we will be surveyed for Magnet designation, a feat that only 6% of hospitals across the nation accomplish. We were also recently recognized with a Silver Award by the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, a national program that recognizes U.S. companies and organizations for their achievements in quality and business performance. We should also take great pride in our five-star national recognition from Healthgrades, a national healthcare research company, for bariatric surgery and natural birth deliveries. The construction of our Physician Office Building and Cancer Center are on target and our financials are strong. Our Medical Group has grown significantly with the addition of several specialties. A new $3.3 million capital campaign has been launched, we added new technology such as 3D mammography and have enhanced a few DI rooms to make them more child friendly. These are just a few highlights that demonstrate the hard work, dedication and commitment by so many throughout this past year. Congratulations to all. May you take the time to reflect on your own personal and professional accomplishments, as well. Have a healthy and safe holiday season and I wish you a peaceful, Happy New Year! As this year closed, we have a lot of accomplishments to reflect upon.
Throughout the year, we achieved great patient satisfaction scores in numerous areas, received all-time high employee engagement participation and a record overall employee engagement grand mean score. Grand RoundsOn November 12, the Hospital hosted an educational lecture as part of its Grand Rounds series “Evaluation and Management of ACS/NSTEMI” that discussed critical elements of cardiology. The peer lecture featured Dr. Robert F. Malacoff, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, FHRS, CCDS
from Orange Regional Medical Group, a Board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist. Dr. Malacoff informed physicians about the best ways to differentiate between unstable angina and NSTEMI, as well as the pathophysiology of acute thrombus formation and myocardial ischemia or injury. The lecture also covered treatment modalities for upstream therapy for ACS.

Dr. Galarneau is a Board-certified urologic surgeon and has been an active medical staffmember of Orange Regional Medical Center since 2000. In July 2013, he was appointedas Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Catskill Regional Medical Center. Dr. Galarneau received his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY and his master's degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He's held residencies in both general surgery and urology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Lankford earned a dual medical degree and master’s degree in public health from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. He completed his residency in urology and a fellowship in endourology, laparoscopy and robotic assisted surgery at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY. He currently performs robotic surgery and advanced endourology at Orange Regional Medical Center.
Maribeth Widas, P.A., is a Board-certified, licensed physician assistant with more than 18 years of experience. She completed her physician assistant program at Stony Brook University and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Manhattan College.
Free Flu Shots Available
The ORMG Primary Care office, located in Monroe, has been providing flu shots to the community FREE of charge and still has some available, while supplies last! Stop by to check out the new office and spread the word about our free flu shots. Pictured is Dr. Joe Chavez Carey.
Medical Group Introduces Urology To Network Of Care
Orange Regional Medical Group is excited to introduce Urology to its growing list of specialties. We welcome urologists Gerard Galarneau, M.D., Dawud Lankford, M.D. and physician assistant, Maribeth Widas.

Jessica Weiss, MPA, BA, LNMT, Diagnostic Imaging Manager, successfully completed The Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement. This was a 7-week certificate program offered through the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) and Johnson Cornell University. The program included a combination of on-site interactive sessions and webinars which included topics on: Service Line Profitability, Reimbursement, Quality, Competitive Strategy, Negotiations and Work Force Development to name a few. Jessica was hand-selected to attend this program as a part of Orange Regional’s commitment to succession planning and ongoing leadership development. She can be reached at [email protected]
Laurie Porcaro, Diabetes Clinical Coordinator, was awarded a Master of Science degree in Diabetes Education and Management from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is one of 11 people in the nation to receive the MS-DEDM degree. Laurie has played a central role in the formation of the Glycemic Improvement Team: an interdisciplinary team that has been responsible for increasing awareness of the importance of inpatient glycemic management. Laurie works closely with a multidisciplinary team to support the evidence-based practices that are necessary to improve patient outcomes. She has led the way to promote and teach the Diabetes Champions program for the GHVHS system. To date, over 90 staff members from various disciplines have completed the course. Her leadership of the Glycemic Improvement Team has been instrumental in keeping our staff engaged in the importance of glycemic control for our patients. Laurie can be reached at [email protected].
Stacy Lynn Britsch, MN, ARNP/CPNP, CPN, accepted the position of Nursing Unit Director for Children’s Emergency Department and 5 West. Stacy joined Orange Regional in 2014 as a Pediatric per diem staff member. After being a member of the pediatric team for a year, she accepted the role of Pediatric Navigator in January of 2015. She has been vital in the development and implementation of evidence-based best practice guidelines, which help to enhance the care of children at Orange Regional. Stacy earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA and her master of nursing degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Maureen Donnelly, MSN, RN-BC, has been appointed as Director of Nursing Informatics and Decision Support. Maureen joins the Orange Regional team after 10 years with the Bon Secours Charity Health System where she was a Professional Practice Educator and Clinical Director of Emergency Services for Bon Secours Community Hospital. In her most recent role, she implemented and optimized EPIC/ConnectCare in their acute care facilities where she was responsible for maintenance and system upgrades.
Maureen began her career as a medical surgical staff nurse at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA. Her clinical practice evolved to Emergency and Urgent Care nursing. She has practiced at Crystal Run Healthcare as an Urgent Care RN, at Catskill Regional Medical Center as a nurse in the Emergency Department, at Ellenville Regional Hospital as the Emergency Department Manager, at Westchester Medical Center as a Staff Nurse/Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department, and also at the Bronx Municipal Hospital as a Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department.
In her new role, Maureen determines the needs and requirements for clinical applications related to information systems. She is also a liaison between the Hospital’s clinical areas and the Information Technology Department to assist with optimization and use of different clinical systems. Maureen graduated with a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. She has a master of science degree in nursing informatics from Walden University and is Board-certified in informatics nursing. Maureen can be reached at [email protected].

“The Future is Orange” Capital Campaign

Orange Regional’s Auxiliary recently donated $25,000 to the Hospital’s “The Future is Orange” Capital Campaign.
The Foundation has launched the $3.3 million “The Future is Orange” Capital Campaign to raise $2 million in support of the equipment needs of the expansion project, $500,000 to support academic medicine by creating an endowment for research and education, $800,000 to support a healing environment including a roof top gathering space, interior and exterior art. The Campaign will also promote the value of outpatient medical services, general wellness, integrated medical care, academic medicine and comprehensive cancer care services.
“We are eternally grateful to the Auxiliary members for their commitment to our hospital in what has been a banner year for them,” said Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation President William Dauster. “They have worked incredibly hard to raise funds then donated those funds to help us complete our pediatric campaign and make among the first gifts to our new campaign for the expansion project.”

Orange Regional held a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to celebrate its enhanced Diagnostic Imaging rooms. Three rooms received custom wall murals by a local artist featuring Orange County countryside with hot air balloons, illuminated ceiling lights replicating open sky, and multi-sensory distractions including soft music. These colorful rooms support Orange Regional’s mission to create a child and family friendly environment for patients who utilize diagnostic imaging services.
Orange Regional’s Diagnostic Imaging rooms improvements were made possible by a $30,000 grant from the enCourage Kids Foundation, formerly known as the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The grant was secured by Michelle Ferguson, the hospital’s Child Life Specialist and received through the Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation.

On November 21, Orange Regional held a free informative Diabetes program "Getting to the Heart of Diabetes" in recognition of National Diabetes Month. Diabetes educators and physicians were on hand to discuss topics such as Diabetes: It’s the Heart of the Matter, The ABCs of Caring for Your Heart, Healthy Heart Eating Tips and more. Guest speakers included Endocrinologist; Elliott Friedman, MD, Cardiologist; Inderpal Singh, MD and Orange Regional Educator and Registered Dietitian; Shelly DeHaan, RD, CDE. There were also informative exhibits and free giveaways. Thank you to all who participated in this event and helped to make it a success!

Out and About On December 1, representatives from the hospital were out and about networking with 600+ attendees at the Orange County Partnership’s Annual Dinner. Congratulations to the Outpatient Rehabilitation team for achieving the highest patient satisfaction scores among all outpatient departments for Quarter 2! You continue to go above and beyond in the services you provide to our patients.

Holiday Happenings
Off-site locations will be closed on New Year’s Day and will be closing at 4:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve. As always, the hospital is open for inpatient care along with our Emergency Department 24/7/365.
On December 8, the first Carolers of the holiday season visited our patients, singing merrily through the halls. Carter’s Caroleers from the William A. Carter Elementary School, in Middletown, spread Holiday Cheer with their voices and beautiful singing. Patients and staff alike smiled and really got into the holiday spirit!
The GHVHS Bioethics Subcommittee commenced its second Bioethics Consulting training session, held at Catskill Regional. The four-part training series concluded with a ceremonial celebration on October 13.
