Happy New Year!

Page 2: Connections - January 2013

A Message From The PresidentHappy 2013!!! I hope your business ended the year up from last year. Now that we have avoided (for now) the infamous fiscal cliff, 2013 may continue the trend toward

modest growth, IF we can get Washington and the NH Statehouse to address the same issues that have plagued them, and us, for some time. Your Chamber is a small business, as most of you are, and I am confounded that we are not looking at cost effective approaches for government. They would be similar to the cost effective approaches that we all have had to employ over the past 2-3 years. I am not convinced that it is either spending or cutting that will make us healthy, but a combination of both. You need to speak up and let your voices be heard. Sitting on the sidelines is obviously not working. It is not a TV show, it is your future, get connected and get involved. The Chamber offers excellent opportunities to do just that. Our Government Affairs Committee meets the first Friday of every month from 8am – 9:15am and features all that is political. Our Senators and Representatives are nearly always at these meetings. Or, if you would like to start out by meeting your Senators and Representatives, we invite you to our annual Legislative Reception at the Portsmouth Sheraton on January 17 from 5-7 pm, sponsored by Pike Industries and PSNH. For those who are into the higher profile issues of the day we offer our Breakfast Forum Series, sponsored by Bank of America. This year’s topics will include the State of the State address by Governor Maggie Hassan, a forum on Business and Education with a special panel, the state of healthcare for NH businesses now that the ACA is in place, and a special presentation on building businesses in the 21st century. I am

hearing that the “business plan” as we know it is becoming obsolete. Of course we will offer the State of the City of Portsmouth presented by John Bohenko, and finally a forum to present a report card on how our Legislature did this year. If you want to educate yourself and your team on “how to” issues we will continue our free Business Development series, the first of which is marketing your business with Darci Creative and effective direct mail campaigns with RAM Printing to be presented on February 14th at The Sheraton from 8-10 am. New knowledge and new skills can be discussed or practiced at our numerous networking events, such as Mid Day Meets which occurs the first Friday of every month at Cafe Nostimo from 11:30am – 12:30pm, or our Business After Hours, the first of which is on January 24th at the Martingale Wharf Restaurant on Bow Street from 5-7pm. You all need to stay tuned for the grandest Business After Hours of the Chamber year: Street.life! aka the Greater Portsmouth Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony. We are nearing completion on the plans and approvals, and no, I will not tell you any more. Suffice it to say that it will be spectacular. Networking and enjoying all that is Portsmouth can be combined with our two Restaurant Weeks and our Shop Portsmouth events. A lot of work happens while we are enjoying this great city. If at the end of the day you feel the need to pursue a health related activity, we encourage you to participate in our Golf Tournament in June or one of the many 5K races of the Portsmouth Community Road Race Series underwritten by Portsmouth Regional Hospital. And if you race all but two of the races you will receive the famed “jacket” emblazoned with the PCRRS logo! Lots to learn, lots to do, all of it fun, no need to take a vacation. Thank you for your joining us and please take advantage of what we offer.

Happy 14th Birthday

We celebrated eBrew style on January 3rd at The Press Room and what a turn out!Thank you to all who came to raise a glass! Enjoy some pics!

The Seacoast Mavericks, a member of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England (FCBL) reached an agreement with the City of Portsmouth to play their 2013 home schedule at historic Leary Field, located in downtown Portsmouth, NH. With its iconic wood grandstand reminiscent of classic old-time baseball,

Leary Field has a rich history and tradition for hosting the Seacoast area’s top athletes. Originally home to the Portsmouth Baseball Club and the powerhouse Atlantic Corporation league in the late 1800s, Leary Field also played host to the Sunset League, the oldest amateur baseball league in the country. Serving as the home for the Portsmouth Middle School baseball teams, Portsmouth Babe Ruth and American Legion Booma Post 6 Baseball organizations, Leary Field will provide another opportunity for the outstanding local collegiate baseball players to hone their talents in front of family and friends. Mike Daboul, President of the Seacoast Mavericks, indicated that the move to Portsmouth will be a win-win situation for all involved. “Last year our organization was able to play a handful of games at Leary Field. It was amazing to see how the collegiate baseball players responded to the environment that Leary provides. Whether talking with the younger fans from the dug-outs, or seeing the lighted steeple of the North Church over the center field fence, Leary Field is an amazing place to play and watch a baseball game”.The City of Portsmouth is equally optimistic about the move. After having learned of the relocation to Leary Field, Portsmouth Mayor Eric Spear said, “I’m excited the Seacoast Mavericks have decided to play in Portsmouth. Summer and baseball together in Portsmouth are a perfect combination. The first game can’t come soon enough!”For Seacoast Mavericks’ partnership and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Mike Daboul at 603-682-6508 or [email protected]. For general information about the Seacoast Mavericks, USA Training Center, or USA Mavericks Baseball, call 603-431-6700. 2013 season tickets are available for sale on our website, www.seacoastmavericks.com.
