The Sepsis team implemented best practices in the Emergency Department and inpatient care units to ensure timely identification and treatment of patients with Sepsis. The Perioperative team made a three-fold improvement in first case on-time starts and teams throughout Orange Regional implemented many similar projects to improve the quality and safety of care to our patients. In 2015, we want to raise the bar on clinical excellence and patient safety by building on what we have learned and accomplished so far. We will monitor 16 patient safety areas such as falls, pressure ulcers, infections, post-operative complications and delays in treatment. We will identify ways to enhance our delivery of care and redesign our processes to continually increase patient safety. In addition, we will be piloting a new Quality-Patient Safety Coach Program. A select number of individuals will be trained as Patient-Safety Experts to identify patient safety risks or concerns within their area. The goal of this program is to improve the culture of safety at all levels and throughout the organization. Patient safety is everyone’s responsibility. I look forward to all staff being actively involved in keeping patient safety and the delivery of quality care at the forefront of everything you do. Congratulations to the entire healthcare team for the many outstanding accomplishments achieved and creating a solid foundation for us to build on in the coming year. In's Out's& Welcome to the "In's & Out's" of the Patient Experience and Transformation Team. The purpose of this monthly
highlight is to bring you stories, research and announcements related to patient satisfaction.
Patient Experience Transformation Team
The holidays bring out the spirit of service and giving. At Orange Regional, departments were busy caring for our patients while also finding joy in service within the community and for our patients who are in need. Serving our patients and families with acts of kindness, assistance and/or offering a helping hand brings joy and reflects compassion, unselfish caring and patience. Here is a sample of the wonderful things some of our departments did for our patients and community this past holiday season: Diagnostic Imaging organized a Toys for Tots collection that benefited the Salvation Army and the Middletown homeless shelter. Endoscopy/Perioperative typically adopts families in the community. This year they helped out their fellow team members who have experienced tragedy. Our prayers and thoughts are with this department. Infusion Therapy adopted a patient in need and presented a basket filled with gifts, food and a gas card. Radiation Oncology gave baskets filled with food and gifts to low-income patients. This holiday season they gave away four baskets: two at Thanksgiving and two at Christmas. Patients who were chosen to receive the baskets were brought to tears. The Laboratory adopted three families from Edward J. Russell Elementary School in Pine Bush and selected gifts from a tree decorated with requests for clothes, shoes, toys and coats. Staff members filled requests and replaced them with an ornament so that the tree stayed decorated. The smiles and joy that the staff brought to our patients and the community during the holidays was touching. Thank you to everyone who opened up their hearts to give. Holiday Cheer is an initiative designed to provide social interaction to inpatients since they tend to have fewer visitors during the holiday season. Staff and volunteers brought the joy of the season to our inpatients and visitors. A mini holiday concert held in the lobby of the Main Campus was directed by Jeff Krolick, our resident piano player. Staff then went from unit to unit, as appropriate, and sang holiday carols for all our inpatients to enjoy while also distributing custom made cards and plants. A special program was planned for our pediatric patients where good ol’ St. Nick made a special appearance.
On December 3, the primary care group participated in the Maple Hill Elementary School’s Curriculum Night. Maple Hill School is in Middletown and over 100 people were in attendance. ORMG was happy to make some needed donations of gift cards for food shopping. Dr. Ellsweig gave a presentation about the primary care group practice and answered questions from the community along with Medical Group team members Kate Bloss, FNP-C, Beth Olsen, practice manager, Jerry Dunlavey, executive director and Jolie DeFeis, marketing director.

We are happy to announce extended hours, including Saturdays, making Orange Regional Medical Group Primary Care even more convenient for staff and our community. As always, same day appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome. Depending on your insurance, there may be no co-pay for employees. Please come and see us! The Trauma Department recently held its first case review and recognition event. A case review examines a patient’s journey from the time they are picked up in an ambulance to discharge from the Hospital. The case review serves as an educational opportunity as it follows the patient throughout their hospital stay, looking at all the interventions, care and outcomes. The patient presented had a traumatic injury to the chest. Based on the case, the ED staff, surgeons, EMS and SICU staff were recognized for saving the life of this patient. Trauma Touching Lives awards were presented to Doctors RoseAnna Roantree, Christian Spano, Gurpreet Gill and Moaz Abulfaraj. Other staff awarded included ED Nurses, Bonnie McFarland, Terri Shapiro, Dennis Husjnovic; ED Technicians, Catherine Tionloc, Chioma Johnson; ED Unit Clerk, Deb Zaccagnino; Respiratory Technician, Brian Bacchus and SICU Nurses, Lynn Gailie, Maria Curran, Deckonti Pajibo, Mary Ann Gardner, Michele Olszanecki, Donna Massie and Eileen Broom. Barbara Shields is now a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). A Certified Diabetes Educator is a health professional who possesses comprehensive knowledge of and experience in diabetes management, pre-diabetes and diabetes prevention. A CDE® educates and supports people affected by diabetes to understand and manage the condition and promotes self-management to achieve individualized behavioral and treatment goals that optimize health outcomes. The Nutrition and Food Service Department was recently visited by Dietitians Orla Haughey and Sarah McEvoy from the Ireland Nutrition and Dietetic Institute in Dublin, Ireland. Both dietitians accompanied Dr. Jennifer Bueche, a Professor of Food and Nutrition at Oneonta State University. Haughey and McEvoy will introduce the Nutrition Care Process and Standardized Language to their practice in Ireland and wanted to see how Orange Regional works with the process. The visiting dietitians spent time with Orange Regional’s dietitians and Dr. Bueche. The Nutrition and Food Services Department had a wonderful experience sharing its progress with Orla and Sarah and truly enjoyed having Dr. Bueche here, who helped develop the process for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the United States. Jordan Corvin, age 13 and Founder of “Jordan’s Wish,” is no stranger to the hospital during the holiday season - he’s been crafting, packaging and gifting presents to patients since he was six-years-old. The Saugerties teen has autism and has been in and out of the hospital over the years and, at times, during the holidays. Remembering how touched he was to receive gifts by others during his hospital stays, Jordan decided he would pay it forward. Jordan visited Orange Regional during the holidays, spreading cheer to patients by giving them handmade bookmarks and gifts.

Orange Regional was visited by Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Minisink Unit 211. The 170 girl scouts, from 15 troops, delivered 170 stockings to benefit our Pediatric Unit, as part of their Fill-a-Stocking project. The stockings were filled with a variety of toys and goodies for our pediatric patients. A huge thank you to Troop #s 075, 105, 112, 114, 116, 144, 157, 235, 418/512, 476, 512, 519, 534, 549, 586, 578, 588, 649, 700, 708! You really made a difference!

David DeLong has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Manager of Business Intelligence and Development. David joined Orange Regional in March 2014 as a Data Reporting Analyst, where he was responsible for the automation of the GHVHS’s current reporting systems, through SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). In his new role, David’s scope of responsibility includes the development of a comprehensive strategy to distribute needed information across clinical, operational and financial channels. David received his Associate of Science degrees in Mathematics and Computer Information Systems from Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, California, his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree in Computer Science from California State University in San Bernardino, California and his Master of Liberal Arts degree in Extension Studies in Information Management Systems from Harvard University Extension School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dana Hendrickson, BSN has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Manager of EPIC Ambulatory Systems. Dana joined Orange Regional in 2002 as a Critical Care Nurse. She served as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for EPIC implementation (Electronic Health Records) and assisted in the validation of workflows with EPIC for the Critical Care Unit. Dana also served as a credentialed EPIC Trainer for the go-live of electronic health records for both Orange Regional and Catskill Regional Medical Centers. Ms. Hendrickson joined the IT department fulltime in 2012, as an analyst for EPIC Clindoc-in patient documentation and then the lead Analyst for EPIC ASAP–ED Clinical Documentation. Dana obtained her Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York and her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. The Greater Hudson Valley Health System recently held its first Schwartz Center Rounds session. These employees planned and facilitated the session with more than 125 staff members in attendance. Frank Salvatore Jr., RRT, MBA, FAARC has been promoted to the role of Greater Hudson Valley Health System Administrator Ancillary Services. He joined the Orange Regional family in March 2009 as Director, Respiratory, Pulmonary and Sleep Services. In September 2012, when a new product line (Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine) for GHVHS was identified, Frank was selected to lead the development and implementation. In his new role, Frank will have direct responsibility and oversight for Respiratory Care, Sleep Medicine, Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine and has been charged with developing a system-wide strategic plan to further integrate and strengthen our existing services across GHVHS. The Town of Wallkill Police Benevolent Association
The Town of Wallkill Police Benevolent Association, along with a cast of characters, visited Orange Regional for a third year and distributed mugs, cards and smiles to many of our patients.
Operation Dalmatian Orange Regional partnered with Operation Dalmatian to collect new toys and clothes for Orange County children. On December 19, the Town of Walden Fire Department visited Orange Regional to pick up hundreds of new, unwrapped toys generously donated to Operation Dalmatian by Orange Regional employees, including Orange Regional Medical Group, and members of the community. The fire department also visited the Pediatrics Unit with Santa Claus to deliver candy canes to patients. Toys were distributed to more than 200 Orange County families in time for the holidays.
Operation Santa Kathy Horvath, long time employee who recently retired and went through chemotherapy and radiation therapies, collected donations for gifts and dressed up as Santa. Kathy handed out the gifts to fellow infusion patients.
County Sheriff’s Department Visits
Santa Claus and members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department visited and made generous donations to Orange Regional‘s Pediatrics Unit and Children’s Emergency Department. Thanks to their generosity, our youngest patients received some great gifts!

Junior Leadership Orange Visits Orange RegionalOn December 12, Orange Regional proudly hosted 34 eighth grade students representing fourteen school districts in Orange County through Junior Leadership Orange. The students took a break from their studies to help our staff decorate the Hospital for the holidays as part of a volunteer effort required through the program. Orange Regional’s Art Curator, Sarah Johnson, spoke to the students about art and the healing environment.
The Junior Leadership Orange Program is a collaboration between the Orange County Youth Bureau and Leadership Orange. This youth
empowerment program is designed to provide leadership skills, life skills, career exposure and preparedness to area youth who will serve as the business leaders of tomorrow. The program is provided at no cost to the participating student, their families or the school districts. Since the program’s inception, over 100 youth have graduated. Jonathan Schiller, COO, currently serves on the Board of Directors for Leadership Orange.

The Feel Good Concert Series is a new initiative emerging at Orange Regional to promote all forms of music as an enhancement to the healing environment as well as to enrich the quality of life for our community.
