Welcome to #CBR

Take the best elements of a city –atmosphere, access, diversity, job opportunities – and package them in a place where the traffic is minimal, the trees are plentiful and kangaroos hop down the main streets like they own the place. Welcome to Canberra.Affectionately known as the Bush Capital, Canberra has all of the benefits of a big city, while still maintaining the heart and community of a town. Situated in the city centre, The Australian National University offers sprawling parklands and safe, accessible transport options. From any direction, the campus is a short walk, bike ride or drive from the city, stunning Lake Burley Griffin or one of Canberra’s many nature reserves. Jump on a bus and you can visit the High Court of Australia, a range of restaurants or the immersive galleries, museums and libraries that hold the nation’s stories. For weekend trips, you can easily choose between the bustle of Sydney, the distinctive beaches of the New South Wales South Coast or the tranquility of the Snowy Mountains.

Home to nearly 80 embassies and high commissions, as well as the heart of the Australian legal system in the form of Parliament House and the High Court, Canberra is safe and affordable with a lower cost of living than Sydney or Melbourne while still providing metropolitan lifestyle at its best.

We are a global city with a multicultural population who welcome students and world-class academics from around Australia and overseas to our community. Find the world at your doorstep in Canberra.

3rd best city in the world to visit in 2018Lonely Planet lists Canberra as one of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in 2018, ranking it above Sydney and Melbourne.1

It’s my pleasure to introduce The Australian National University’s College of Law 2018 International Student Guide.

The 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject ranked Law at ANU 12th in the world, while ANU is Australia’s number one ranked university, and 20th in the world.1

Our College is renowned for its collegiality, teaching excellence and small class sizes.

The ANU College of Law is home to 5 research centres, a reform and social justice initiative and a strong cohort of higher degree research students. Through the Centres for Commercial Law; International and Public Law; Law, Arts & the Humanities; Military & Security Law; Profession, Education & Regulation in Law; and the Law Reform and Social Justice initiative, we have built networks with lawmakers, the judiciary and legal academic researchers throughout Australia and the world.

Our campus is located on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Australia’s national capital, Canberra, a city of 400,000 people, known for being safe, clean and green. Indeed, in the numerous trees across our campus, you’ll see plenty of native wildlife, such as possums, and dozens of types of birds.

We look forward to welcoming you to ANU.

The ANU Juris Doctor (JD) is a distinctive program designed for graduates of non-law disciplines (or non-Australian law degrees) and provides the qualification required for admission as a lawyer in Australia.

ANU College of Law’s JD is a highly regarded legal qualification from one of the world’s top Law Schools. Completing a JD, and the requisite Practical Legal Training (PLT), qualifies you to practice law anywhere in Australia and in some other jurisdictions.

Our JD combines core foundational legal studies with a distinctive capstone experience incorporating practical clinical studies, internships or a research project, where you witness the law in action. The clinical study involves working with clients on real problems with real deadlines, giving graduates a competitive edge in the workforce.

The program emphasises the issues of law reform and social justice in the curriculum, where you discover legal theory, how the law is applied and how it affects people’s lives.

Throughout your studies you will experience world-class teaching from academics who mentor and guide you successfully through the program. You will also get access to the frequent high-profile visitors to ANU Law, including judges, barristers and visiting academics from around the world.

As an ANU law student, you’ll benefit from a supportive and student-focused environment, and a teaching approach that allows you to gain a real-world insight into law.

Your learning is further enhanced by our location in Canberra, which puts you in close proximity to the Federal Parliament, the High Court of Australia and key government agencies such as the Attorney-General’s Department, the Department of Defence, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Treasury.

In the later years of your degree, you’ll also have numerous opportunities to gain real-world experience by taking advantage of field trips, internships and mooting competitions.

ANU Law also actively encourages you to gain hands-on experience through clinical courses, international exchanges, internships and volunteering, some of which can count towards your academic credit.

Admission to practiceIf you wish to seek admission to practise law in Australia, you must complete Practical Legal Training (PLT) in addition to the Juris Doctor.

The ANU GDLP will equip you with an accredited Graduate Diploma from a prestigious tertiary institution, which will give you an edge in an increasingly competitive employment market.

Your GDLP programYour GDLP will build on the knowledge you have gained in your Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor, giving you the practical skills required of a legal practitioner and the qualification required to be admitted to practise law in Australia.

The first Australian law school specialising in legal practice.ANU is Australia’s largest and leading university provider of Practical Legal Training.

Providing specialised knowledge on the application of law, the ANU Master of Legal Practice is an advanced, practise-based qualification.

The Master of Legal Practice (MLP) is highly regarded amongst employers because it instils a higher understanding of law and requires intellectual perseverance and application. As with the ANU GDLP, the ANU MLP meets the requirements of the Australian Law Admissions Consultative Committee, and equips you with the practical insight and professional understanding needed to be admitted as a lawyer in Australia.

With the option of studying completely online, with the exception of the 4-day face-to-face ‘Becoming a Practitioner’ course, the ANU MLP enables you to acquire and practise advanced knowledge and skills in specialist areas of legal practice, such as Family Law, Intellectual Property, Digital Media and Communication, Litigation, Future of Legal Practice, In-House Legal Practice, Commercial Law and Property Law. Students graduate from the MLP with a Masters-level degree and the ability to seek direct or reciprocal admission to practise law nationally.

Once you have completed the GDLP course component of your MLP, you can seek admission to practise while continuing to study the 4 completion courses you need to gain your MLP. You can complete the MLP component entirely online from anywhere in the country, or even across the globe – the choice is yours. Select your MLP courses from our online offerings in our range of MLP completion courses, or choose to join us on campus for face-to-face intensive courses offered through the MLP or the Master of Laws programs.

You can complete the MLP in as little as 6 months, or finish it at your own pace.

To complete your MLP, you:

> Complete just four Masters-level courses (in addition to the GDLP).

> Choose from over 22 MLP courses with a practice focus, and you can also select from over 40 LLM courses.

> Choose up to 2 courses from the MLP suite of courses with up to 2 courses from the range of LLM courses or other MLP courses.

Offer over 22 MLP courses (face-to-face and online) including:

Advocacy Commercial Drafting

Duration6 months [Full-time]

The Graduate Certificate of Law at ANU is the ideal postgraduate qualification, whether you are just starting your career, changing direction or returning to employment and needing a competitive edge.

Developed for graduates of disciplines other than law, the 6-month Graduate Certificate of Law introduces you to the fundamentals of Australian and international legal systems, providing insight into how law is created, interpreted and applied.

Exploring both domestic and global contexts, the Graduate Certificate of Law equips you with an understanding of the role and function of law across topical areas such as regulation, the environment, governance and development.

Through the Graduate Certificate of Law, you’ll acquire the skills required to be successful in an increasingly competitive workplace, including the ability to analyse complex problems, conduct high-level research and develop considered legal arguments.

The program also allows you to select elective subjects from over 80 different courses, enabling you to tailor your program of study to reflect your career goals.

The Graduate Certificate of Law takes advantage of ‘intensive’ teaching, which clusters lectures for each course over 3–5 days (with the remainder of course contact and support provided online), helping to significantly reduce the amount of time you need to spend on campus.

The Graduate Certificate of Law does not qualify you to be admitted to practise law in Australia, but will allow you to apply to the ANU Master of Laws. More information about our Master of Laws can be found on page 13 of this guide.

The pathway to a Master of LawsOnce you’ve successfully completed the Graduate Certificate of Law, you can apply for the ANU Master of Laws (LLM) – our globally recognised advanced law degree – and take your understanding of law to an even higher level by focusing on specific areas such as government, international and environmental law.

If you’re seeking a postgraduate qualification that meets the requirements for admission as a lawyer in Australia, you should instead consider the ANU Juris Doctor. More information about our Juris Doctor can be found on page 12 of this guide.

Graduate outcomesThe program provides practical knowledge for a wide range of careers in public, private and not-for-profit sectors, and is especially valuable if you work in – or aspire to work in – a role that deals with law, regulation and policy. In addition, graduating from ANU Law will see you join a prestigious and highly recognised alumni network in Australia and around the globe.
